Hillary Clinton In Vogue: Drinks With Reporters, Enjoys "Mad Men," Admires Michelle's Style

Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/18/2010 5:12 am Updated: 05/25/2011 2:40 pm

After turning down Vogue during the presidential campaign for "fear of looking too feminine," Hillary Clinton has finally granted Vogue the interview they wanted. And the feature, which appears in the magazine's December issue, makes the secretary of state sound like a whole lot of fun.

Writer Jonathan van Meter reports that Clinton enjoys "Mad Men" (telling him "That's how it was!...That's why the women's-liberation movement was so shocking. It was like news from outer space"), is "a champion sleeper" ("[s]he naps on command; she is impervious to jet lag"), and does her own makeup ("holding a compact, Clinton puts on mascara, lipstick, blush, and a little powder").

Clinton graced the cover of Vogue in December 1998, when she was first lady.

The secretary of state was also asked about First Lady Michelle Obama's support for young fashion designers. She told van Meter, "[Michelle] can carry it off and she enjoys it, so more power to her."

The writer traveled with Clinton on her trip through Africa in August, and recounted one particularly entertaining evening:

In Cape Town, she threw a party for the press and drank with the best of us, talking for more than two hours, into the night, with surprising off-the-record candor about everything from her husband to her disdain for certain world leaders. She's fun. She laughs at herself. And she is full of surprisingly sharp, pointy little retorts, barbs, and comebacks.

In another juicy tidbit, the article suggests that Clinton might have the hots for handsome British foreign secretary David Miliband. Read more about that and see a slideshow of the two together HERE.

This new interview and spread are less timely and less important to Clinton as it’s more damage control than trying to win a race. And she still wears the blue power suit that probably set Wintour’s teeth on perfect edge. I’m all for understanding the power of fashion as personal presentation and that is a lot of the substance of politics. http://www.magme.com/blog/2009/11/vogue-being-all-voguey-to-hillary-clinton/

She's right to envy Michelle, for Hillary couldn't buy style if it were on sale at Goodwill.

Who cares. It's not her job to make a fashion statement.

Yeah, because that's important to the Sec of State. Some women got it and some women don't. Michelle does, Hilary doesn't but neither do I. Who am I to judge? Hilary is good at her job. i'm pretty happy about that.

I think she is great, I was an advocate for her but did turn to Obama, and not sorry.. I find her pictures on a related article just wonderful ( the one with the flirtation with the British fellow, all in good fun but the point is wonderful pictures of a happy and whjat looks to be vibrrant woman) No V; she is doing what I believe to be as wonderful job as SOS. I wonder if her current experience isn't another notch in her belt, being around Obama and experiencing his method of leadership.( Obama bringing his own style to the job and with skills unusual to the office. .I admire her more now than before and am sad that people speak of her time as having passed.. As a side .. is there any truth to alzheimers ??

Much love.

I can tell that she admires Michelle's style. Lately, she's been trying to spruce it up a bit, but she has failed each time. LOL!! Other than that, she's ok with me. :D

I didn't like Clinton for president, but I have been very impressed with her during the last year.

I would happily support Hillary for President in 2012.

What has she done to make her impress you?

I happened to enjoy her snappy remark towards the college student... "You want me to tell you what my husband thinks?"

Rhamm and the Israeli lobby allow her to drink ?
Well why not ? It makes no difference at all what she has to say.

Don't kid yourself. The right would have savaged her worse than they are doing it to Obama. Don't you remember? THEY INVESTIGATED HER CAT! I think she is much more effective where she is. She can actually get some work done instead of dealing with the stup1d cr@p she had to put up with when Bill was president. She is absolutely shining as SoS

This is a good picture of her. Maybe Obama can appoint her as Supreme Court Justice? I'm still holding out hope. If she was asked, I think she would do it.
