Nine high school girls have been suspended for their involvement in a massive November 8 fight at a soccer game in Rhode Island. The AP has more, and video of the fight is embedded below.

(AP) Nine members of two high school girls' soccer teams have been suspended for their roles in a fight that sparked a brawl in the bleachers.

The suspensions were announced Tuesday by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League. They range from two games to one year. Coaches from both Woonsocket and Tolman high schools also were issued unspecified sanctions.

The fight broke out after two players collided during a Nov. 8 game. A television news camera recorded the girls throwing punches and pulling hair, and fans fought in the bleachers during an awards ceremony.

The Interscholastic League says the punishments show that fighting and unsportsmanlike conduct won't be tolerated.

Well Emily, as a general rule of thumb. If your hometown cannot be found on a national map of the country. Then it is a suburb.

Well, I don't live in a rule of thumb, now do I? I live in a city. Not a suburb. (:

Much ado about nothing.

COME ON. You call that a fight? Seriously senior citizens put up a better fight. We Americans must learn how to get our inner hooligan on. It shouldn't be reserved for the Lakers or Raider nation.

Now these are fights:

Hey. If this fight was in Detroit it would not be news. Then again we dont have high scool girls soccer in Detroit. Which kind of makes my point.

As a huge football 'soccer' fan, something about this really warms my heart and leave me assured that the game is in good hands with this next generation.

(Tongue firmly in cheek)

In response to Granfalloon- Anywhere in Rhode Island is the suburbs. In fact any towns named Pawtucket and Woodsocket are guaranteed to be in the suburbs . And lets be real. The vast majority of participants in high school girls soccer in this country are suburban and white. Then factoring in the demographics of the state of Rhode Island. I would bet the majority of players on both of these teams are white. Which leads me back to my original question; Does it seem like white children from the suburbs are becoming increasingly violent?
03:03 PM on 11/18/2009
Really? You really don't know anything about Rhode Island if you seriously think it's all suburbs. Pawtucket definitely is NOT suburbs, nor is Woonsocket. In fact there's only about eight to ten suburbs in the state, and a majority of these players are not white, either. I'm on the Pawtucket team and I can tell you right now that the the majority of players on my team is not white, it's hispanic.
Also, regarding the game, I can't speak for Woonsocket, or any other team in the country for that matter, but I know how that game went for us, and it wasn't the norm. Our season is pretty long, and none of our games have been like this this season in the least. After a long game, down by 5, we were all tired, but our teammate decided to act upon her feelings, which wasn't the right thing to do in the situation, but its what she did. The Woonsocket player threw the first punch and this was visible to everyone on the field. In these videos you can see both teams running towards the two girls, and this was to get them to stop fighting so the game could finish.
Anyway, sorry to ramble on your post.

How about the "majority of players" who were SUSPENDED? Here are the names of the suspended Tolman players based on a Providence Journal report: Jazmine Almeida, the freshman who left the bench; 5, junior Maria Lopera; 8, senior Kayla Perdomo, a captain, and 13, junior Estefania Duran. Still want to make a bet?

Doesn't Tony Soprano's daughter play with that team?

And the coach's apology? "We had good spirit, so I'm not going to take the fall for that". That's teaching good sportsmanship!

Is it me or are white children from the suburbs becoming increasingly violent?
02:09 PM on 11/18/2009
First of all, these teams represent the towns of Pawtucket and Woonsocket, neither of which could be mistaken as "suburbs". Secondly, they both have signficant non-white populations. In fact, look closely and you can see that the little punk that started the fight with a push and then a punch is not white.

What is she?

It's not you; it's the Internet. Everything seems more prevalent on the "intertubes". That question though, is kind of ironic coming from the "King of Detroit".

That wouldn't happen if they played football (They'd be wearing helmets, pads, etc. to protect them)

I guarantee you that if a few "details" about these players were changed, people would be a lot more outraged.
