The Yes Men Take On Coca Cola And Dasani Water (VIDEO)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/18/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 03:40 PM ET

The Enviro-Pranksters The Yes Men were at it again with a recent trip to Boston, where, posing as Coca Cola representatives, they unveiled a new name and label for Dasani water, called "Deception." The Yes Men, working with the Think Outside The Bottle Campaign of Corporate Accountability International are drawing attention to how bottled water is marketed as healthier, but its actually less regulated than city water and comes with serious environmental costs. Kristin Urquiza from the Think Outside The Bottle campaign discusses in the video that 40% of bottled water actually comes from the same sources as tap water.

Watch as The Yes Men unveil the new product, ask consumers if they would buy it, and be sure to watch to the end when they get confronted by a Coca Cola employee.

Since it is my life's mission to boycott companies that invest in Israel, Coke/Dasani is huge on my hit list. I wouldn't touch the sh*t.

Let's see, I'm driving through Eastern Washington, miles from the nearest water source, and I get a flat tire. Ooops. I'm in big trouble.

But wait, I have a case of bottled water in the back of my car, a cell phone, a jack, a spare tire, some granola bars, and an emergency blanket.

Oh, no. I ditched my case of bottled water for a liter-sized container of tap water and ... dang ... it's 3/4 empty.

Hello? Bottled water is convenient, MUCH cleaner than ditch water and stores for months without growing pond slime. Of course I drink tap water at home, but don't knock bottled water for emergencies or when you want a little fuzzy excitement with a slice of lime that won't put you into jail for drunk driving when you're driving home from the club.

All things in moderation, including moderation.

Dasani and similar products are municipal tap water purified through a reverse osmosis system and then "flavored" with magnesium sulfate, potassium chloride, sodium chloride, and other salts.

One can produce a similar product at home. Activated carbon filters (e.g. Brita or Pur) are good, but under-sink reverse osmosis systems for the home can be purchased for about $200 + $50/yr.

There are several good resources on the web for mineral water recipes, such as this one:

http://www.scientificpsychic.com/health/mineral-water.html

If you drink one or more bottles of water per day, then it's definitely more cost-effective to invest in a good purification system and make your own. I recommend buying a set of translucent high-density polyethylene (HDPE) bottles, which are BPA-free, dishwater-safe, and recyclable (resin code 2).

Any one that doesn't say "Spring Water" on the label.
Generally labeled "Purified Water" or "Drinking Water".

really. Thats interesting. So the Nestles water that says "Purified" is tap, and the generic CHIL brand from Super Valu that says "Spring Water" is really Spring water? Hmmm.
I'll go with the Super Valu water then for our long trips. Its $2.99 for a 24-16 oz pack. The Nestles is $4.99 .
I wonder if there is a law or reg that says they cant say spring water unless its spring water? Also, my parents live in an area where their municipal water, or tap water, originates from underground springs. then its treated and filtered. Does that mean that their tap water isnt really tap, but genuine spring water? Could my parents bottle from their kitchen sink and call it spring water?

And spring water doesn't necessarily mean it isn't tap water forced into the ground above a natural spring to increase the flow.

not only is it tap water, they charge you more for the water than they do for coke.

so, adding the ingredients of coke actually diminish the waters value.

enjoy, suuckers.

In Africa, it is Coca Cola policy to charge more for their water than their Cola.

At home I drink filtered tap water which tastes good. But I do drink bottled water as well. And I like the taste of Dasani water, and it does not taste like the unfiltered tap water that at least I have at my house, which you can obviously tell has a chlorine taste to it. From my understanding Dasani water is filtered and minerals are added back to it so it tastes good. So it does seem to me that it is not exactly the same as tap water, no matter the source.

We replaced soda with dasani in my house and it has been a hit. The convenience of it is worth the coast. And we recycle all of our bottles.

I use a pur water filter in my dorm room. The faucet water is pretty good, the dorm has been around for 40 years so I am not 100% positive the water is as good as a newer dorm so I filter it just in case. I keep a pitcher of cold pur filtered water in my fridge and it's great to come home and have some cold water fresh to drink.

I see so many people at my college just buy dozens and dozens of bottled water, and we recycle in our school but not everyone does.

Bottled water is American marketing at its worst. I refuse to buy water unless it's been actually processed into something different like beer, a cola drink, or made heavy for a nuclear reactor.
