Tim Russert's Office Newseum Exhibit Set To Open

The exhibit that has recreated Tim Russert's office is set to open at the Newseum in Washington, DC Friday.

"Inside Tim Russert's Office" will take museum visitors inside Russert's office in the Washington bureau of NBC News, where he was bureau chief and moderator of "Meet the Press" until his sudden death in June 2008.

  • A large wooden sign -- "Thou Shalt Not Whine" -- that was located at the front of Russert's desk and summed up his attitude about hard work.
  • An eraser board Russert used during the 2000 presidential election that referred to Florida as the critical state needed for victory.
  • Draft scripts of a "Meet the Press" interview with President George W. Bush in February 2004 that include Russert's notes and revisions.

Newseum CEO Charles Overby told NBC Washington that the exhibit "shows the humanity of Tim Russert."

"He's probably talked to more powerful people than just about anybody I would know, but when you go into his office, what you see are things that you and I would have in our offices," Overby said.

"It takes you into the world of a journalist at the top of his game, and it shows you the range of his interests," Cathy Trost, the Newseum's director of exhibit development, told the Buffalo News. "And it definitely is a working office that shows that he worked very rigorously to produce a quality show."

NBC News President Steve Capus told the Buffalo News that he hopes visitors "get a sense of of the friend and colleague Tim was, and a glimpse into what made Tim's office a very special place for us at NBC News."

The exhibit will run from November 20 through 2010.
