OCALA, Fla. — John Travolta and his family made their first public appearance in their adopted Florida hometown since his son's death, helping raise thousands of dollars for charity at a screening of the actor's new comedy Friday night.

Travolta, wife Kelly Preston and daughter Ella Bleu greeted hundreds of fans for a sneak preview of Disney's "Old Dogs," which opens Wednesday.

An emotional Travolta thanked the crowd for supporting the family since 16-year-old Jett Travolta died Jan. 2 at the family vacation home in the Bahamas.

"We know that we are loved," Travolta said. "We appreciate it. Jett appreciates it. We love you, Ocala."

The private gala raised at least $37,500 for five nonprofit agencies: The Jett Travolta Foundation, Florida Highway Patrol Advisory Council, Project Hope, the Marion County Public Safety Assistance Trust and the Humane Society of Marion County.

The Travoltas live just north of Ocala, about 90 miles northwest of Orlando.

Here's one family that can be truly proud. They have overcome such adversity after the death of their son and they literally put their money where their mouth is. John Travolta and his family Rocks!

Wow. One "together " family. ~~It amazes me how John Travolta flies across any obstacles.
Time for a song:

They could choose to be in Hollywood for a sneak preview but instead they choose to be in Ocala - and we in Florida are grateful. The Travolta family has done a lot for the community and we thank them for their support and love and we feel for their loss. Enough said.

Yep, my thoughts exactly. We are all entitled to make our own choices, but when a popular person represents something like this c u l t, then I will not take my money to support that popularity. I wish them all well, but I just won't support anyone affiliated with that group.

Nobody is asking you to put one cent into anything unless you want to. ( This isn't about confronting a workable philosophy that got away with not paying taxes because they thought to do so would mean they would have to declare themselves a religion.) Did you ever go to Church and give money into the basket before confession/ communion? Just curious.

John, I too plead with you to leave this cult. Have the great courage to do so, PLEASE.

You could do so much more with your fame and money to help others all around thw world, instead of giving it to this cult.

What a strange and dysfunctional family...

Whatever reason do you have for making such a comment?

They seem like a happy and loving family, albeit in mourning at the moment.

Well you can't ignore they belong to a bizarre organization that advocates against medication... and they assume it had nothing to do with the loss of their son

I wish them nothing but the best, they have a beautiful daughter, and I hope they find some peace.

I truly don't get why they never got the the bottom of Jett's condition or syndrome. As a parents with the means to good doctors and care why would they not want to know exactly was that their son suffered from? They might have been advocates to his condition. I don't know the story... still it is odd that their religion dictates them in that way.

Not only am I not a Scientologist but I have had quite negative interactions with members of that Church in my life (one time being ripped off for thousands of dollars).

Nevertheless I have great admiration for Scientologists because they stand up and oppose the incredible medicating and over medicating our children which is a bloody epidemic these days. Every time I go to the bloody doctor and complain even about a minor problem, the doctor whips out his prescription pad.

Enough. Scientologists are standing up against these horrible anti-psychotic drugs which are being given to children and young people and addicting them for life.
