Dennis Moore Retiring: Democrat Leaving Heavily Republican District
Rep. Dennis Moore, a Democrat who held a seat in a heavily Republican Kansas district for six terms, will not seek reelection.
Moore, who represented Kansas' 3rd district, will issue a statement today explaining his decision and outlining his plans. He is expected to finish out his term, which ends in January 2011.
President Barack Obama narrowly won the 3rd district in 2008.
National Journal's Hotline adds: "Moore has a long history of keeping a GOP-leaning district, and if GOPers are going to have a strong year, districts like his are ones they will need to pick up ... [S]o far this year GOPers have been frustrated by the lack of Dem retirements."
Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chair Chris Van Hollen told Hotline that the party has an "early warning system" to prevent retirements, which helped the GOP sweep midterm elections in 1994.
