Palin Fort Bragg Book Signing: Former Governor Asked Not To Speak

FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Sarah Palin brought her book-signing tour to North Carolina's Fort Bragg on Monday as thousands greeted the former Republican vice presidential candidate in a campaign-like gathering that tested military rules involving politicians.

The Department of Defense typically prohibits politicians from using installations as a platform, so Palin didn't give a speech and simply thanked soldiers individually. She was allowed to hold the event as a private citizen who was not campaigning, a Fort Bragg spokesman said.

Army officials initially feared the book signing might turn political and negative comments would be directed at President Barack Obama, so they barred media from attending. The Army later relented and allowed coverage, and many people who attended did voice their opposition to the commander in chief.

Palin's tour bus parked nearby, splashed with her photo, encouraged donations to her political action committee, while supporters made clear that she should run for president.

Palin's father, who greeted visitors as his daughter signed copies of the book, said in an interview that Obama's handling of the military was "scary."

"I see a decline in our might," Chuck Heath said. "People used to be afraid of us and respect us, (but) they're not afraid of us and don't respect us anymore."

Col. Billy Buckner, a spokesman for Fort Bragg, said the Army agreed to let Palin on post because she was no longer a politician.

"She fell into a little bit of a gray area," he said. "She's not a political figure per se, but she certainly carries a tremendous amount of interest and influence across the country."

The former Alaska governor began a nationwide tour last week to promote a new memoir, "Going Rogue." She also has a planned visit to Fort Hood, Texas, on Dec. 4 – just a month after 12 people were killed there in a shooting rampage.

Later in Birmingham, Ala., hundreds of fans packed the Colonial Brookwood Village Mall at Homewood and chanted Palin's name for her book signing. A crowd estimated by police at about 1,800 lined up beginning Saturday night for a chance to get one of the 1,000 wristbands needed to meet Palin.

Hundreds of Palin supporters also arrived early at Fort Bragg, and one woman spent nearly 24 hours in line. Officials estimated that some 4,000 turned out. More than 500 had to be turned away as the three-hour signing ended.

G.R. Quinn, 58, a veteran who spent 20 years in the military, wore an "Impeach Obama" shirt. He blasted the president for closing the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, for the plan to hold a key Sept. 11 terrorism trial in New York and for Obama's handling of the military overseas.

"He's so wishy-washy about Afghanistan," Quinn said, adding he hopes more troops will be sent there.

While the supporters were primarily civilians, dozens of uniformed personnel also greeted Palin. They craned to snap photos and shook her hand as she left.

Chief Warrant Officer Two Jeff Thompson, 36, praised Palin for stopping by.

"She cares about the troops," Thompson said. The soldier, who has had two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, said he supported the GOP ticket in 2008 but he considers Obama his boss.

"I support his decisions," Thompson said.

Chuck Heath. "People used to be afraid of us and respect us. They aren't afraid of us anymore and don't respect us".

Of course Heath said this BEFORE the Indian Prime Minister made the comment that our President has done much to restore respect between nations in his first months in office. But then, Heath wouldn't have lowered himself to listen to the leader of a foreign nation.

His statement just doesn't make sense. I, and most people, IMHO, would agree, cannot see myself 'respecting' anyone who scares me.

I totally agree...in fact, I was going to comment on that same quote; in the world environment today, fear and respect are mutually exclusive. Fear cannot be used to get our way...however, now we know where Sarah Barracuda learned her under-handed methods of intimidation. Besides, since so many right-winger Tea Baggers "fear" the govt (as they're so fond of wailing), by his logic, doesn't that mean they should therefore respect it? Can't have it both ways, Heath...

Hi, Tree Hugger, I just read some of your previous posts and I like your thinking. I particularly liked your reasons for NOT declawing cats (I missed the original article). It's a barbaric practice and anyone who complains about a cat using his/her claws doesn't understand that all animals have their defensive mechanisms. I live alone - but have five cats (all salvage - indoor/outdoor animals) and they are such great company. My girlfriend gave me a hint for protecting door jams - take a piece of old rug and affix it to the door jams - and voila, they now have scratching poles all over the house which are replaced when necessary. As for my cats? They wait until I'm nodding off and use my leg as a scratching post - and quickly get my attention - which I enjoy as much as they do.

By the way, thanks for your comment. As a woman I'm offended by the moose-lady's self-admiration (considering how stup.id she comes across during interviews) as well as the way she parades her children as props during times when they should be in school -and when they can hear the vile epithets screamed at her rallies. When I hear her I'm reminded of the song from the old movie "South Pacific" - You've got to be carefully taught - to hate and to fear, etc. etc.

By the way, I just became a fan. Thanks and Peace be with you.

What is that secret hand signal in the picture? I have seen "peace" signs and "devil's horns" but I don't know what her hand signs mean. Is it secret "Palin speak" as Shannon moore puts it.

“Palin's appearance tested Department of Defense regulations, which prohibit politicians from using installations as a platform.

But the bus parked nearby encouraged donations to her political action committee and supporters made clear that she should run for president. ”

It's noteworthy that Palin's Facebook page is full of comments calling for the death of our President, sedition, and overthrowing of the Obama administration as being God's will.

She's also the defacto leader of the Tea Party Movement, to be officially crowned as such by them this February.

"There's been a lack of acknowledgement by our president in understanding what it is that the American military provides in terms of, obviously, the safety, the security of our country," Palin said during an interview with Fox News's Greta Van Susteren.

"I want him to acknowledge the sacrifices that these individual men and women - our sons, our daughters, our moms, our dads, our brothers and sisters - are providing this country to keep us safe."

This must stop.

Why should she follow laws, after all she is SP.
But she is putting her child in danger by not putting him in a child seat,
and ignoring laws which protect him.
Any good Mom would want to keep her child safe.
Sadly he is along as a prop.

This woman is so p issing me off. How dare she go onto a military installation and incite negativity toward our President? My husband is coming up on his 20th year in the AF and she may as well be spitting in his face for all the crap she is pulling.

What in gods name is wrong with this country that we are paying this demogogue any mind at all? I just shake my head in disbelief and feel like I"m living in sort of dream world. And to make matters worse- I live in Wasilla!! This whole thing is surreal and is making me sick.

What i find hard to believe is the implication that Palin would run the military so much better. It makes me shudder just to think of her as Commander in Chief.

How sad that Chuck Heath-Pops equates fear to respect.
I guess that's typical in the minds of God-'FEARING'" folks.

The US Army was flat out wrong to allow this quitter and seditionist to utilize their base to spew nonsense while under the guise of selling her book. What a slap in the face to the president and CiC.

It seems that outrage across the country over behavior of Palin and her entourage at Ft. Bragg has shown itself in stories on military-themed websites.

For example, AP story on Palin's Ft. Bragg visit appears on a website widely-read by our nation's military, Military.com, and they titled the piece "Some Anti-Obama Tones to Palin Bragg Visit." The comments are dominated by folks who are incensed by the behavior at the event.

For example:

I wonder what would have happened if someone wore an impeach Bush/Cheney shirt when he was our CINC?

Perhaps an even bigger indicator of the ripple effect after Palin's visit can be seen in a comment on this blog. The story below includes contact numbers to Public Affairs on Fort Hood, including the Col. who is the Public Affairs Officer. I requested that folks contact them and express (respectfully) their feelings. Reader Pearlygirl took me up on that:

Response from Ft Hood
I just called Col. Danner. He was very polite and also expressed that he has received many concerns about this book signing. It was set up before the recent shootings but it is being rethought. It was worth calling.
