Phil Carter Resigns: Key Pentagon Appointee Worked On Gitmo Detainee Issues

First Posted: 3/18/10 Updated: 5/25/11

Phil Carter

Phillip Carter, the top detainee affairs policy appointee at the Pentagon, has quit his post after just seven months on the job, a Defense Department spokesman said Tuesday. Carter told the Washington Post that he was leaving for "personal and family reasons."

Carter, an Army captain who served in Iraq, had been an outspoken critic of the Bush administration's detention policy. He wrote extensively on national security and intelligence issues on his blog, IntelDump, before joining Barack Obama's presidential campaign last year to oversee outreach to veterans.

Carter's resignation appears to have caught the Department of Defense off guard, according to the Miami Herald:

Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman declined to say precisely when Carter submitted the resignation, or where he last traveled in a job that took him frequently to Afghanistan, Iraq and the U.S. Navy base in southeast Cuba.

"He has submitted his resignation,'' Whitman said, brushing aside a question of whether Carter was still reporting to work or had already spent his last day on the job. "A replacement has not yet been named." [...]

It was not known whether Carter's service in uniform as a civil affairs officer in Iraq helped him fit in to the Defense Department culture where pockets of senior leadership were holdovers from the Bush administration.

Carter's move comes days after President Obama acknowledged publicly for the first time that his administration would not meet its goal to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay by January 2010.

White House counsel Greg Craig, who played a major role in setting detainee policy for Obama, also announced his resignation this month.

What is this - a Rorschach test? It invites speculation on a subject that we just don't know.. HP has already drifted towards "Gotcha" journalism with the huge photos and speculation of Photoshop and plastic surgery, but let's hope it doesn't keep floating these "What's he doing in there?" speculation balloons so we can all conspire to find the hidden truth for the sport of it.

Because Obama not only like rivals on his team; he likes them at his dinner table too! But what really are the political degrees of separation?

I know one thing they ALL have in common: "They'll sell their soul to get power."

Well I've posted five things on the main. All on topic.

Two were replies to comments which moderation approved. Then they changed their minds and removed those comments so the comments and my replies just vanished.

The other three just never showed up.

I think it's cruel of hp to let us take time to do posts, sometimes putting a lot of thought into them, and then they scr.ub them. As if they are of no worth. They put one of mine up but it took a half an hour.

I am sorry, Zaphod, you deserve much better.

Have a sandwich while you wait.

One things for sure: there is something not right in the Administration, something or someone causing these people to resign rather than commit to the "agenda".

All great li.es carry an enormouse burden. Every time there is deception the burden grows. Eventually, the other shoe drops and the truth emerges. I just hope that when it does, it's not too late to turn things around, because Obama is definitely taking this country in the wrong direction on foreign policy.

I am anxious for the truth, but my suspicions that something is wrong, that we may be betrayed again as we were with the Bush Administration are very strong.

The Iz lobby is the most powerful foreign entity in America and you can thank them for Obama's failure or lack of political courage to take the step needed to turn this country around towards REAL change and not phony-baloney, watered-down Bush-lite change!

The vision and dream we were reminded of with Obama during most of the primaries was hi. jacked by this entity...once again, and Rahm was the one who helped them do it!

Now, did Obama surrender willingly or...is there something we don't know?

True, Rahm ensured Hillary is there, like a pitbull breathing down his neck, but was the possibility that she could replace him in a heartbeat enough to turn the man against himself and his integrity?

You can't deny there are many neocons within their community. You just can't, but a few bad apples won't ruin the whole bunch for me or anyone with a good doses of common sense, for that matter.

I repeat: Can I help it if they (ie. the lobby) leave a trail of breadcrumbs every time?
