WASHINGTON - The first state dinner of the Obama White House had it all: Oscar-winning entertainers, Hollywood moguls, a knockout guest chef and even a wardrobe malfunction. Traditional evening gowns vied with saris of vibrant colors Tuesday night at the high-glitz dinner in honor of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. There were turbans and bindis as well as diamonds and brocades.

"Everyone looks great; we're feeling great," White House social secretary Desiree Rogers told a phalanx of cameras as she arrived, betraying no hint of nerves at the biggest social event of the Obama presidency.

First lady Michelle Obama had been a little more forthcoming earlier in the day when she described the trick to pulling off the event as sort of like being a swan: calm and serene above the water but "paddling like mad, going crazy underneath."

The 338-person guest list was a mix of wonky Washington, Hollywood A-listers, prominent figures from the Indian community in the U.S., and Obama friends, family and campaign donors.

Attorney General Eric Holder patted his pocket as he arrived and said his kids had prepped him with all sorts of questions for tablemate Steven Spielberg. U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, asked who she was most looking forward to chatting with, ventured, "I'd have to name four." Then didn't.

Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania had to scramble when his ensemble went rogue at just the wrong moment: His cummerbund dropped to the floor just as he and his wife stopped to pose before a scrum of about 40 reporters and photographers.

Alfre Woodard and Blair Underwood provided the celebrity quotient, but neither could come up with a connection to India. Underwood said he was there because of Woodard. She said she was there because she's on the president's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.

Dinner guests were treated to an eye-catching scheme of green and purple, from the green curry surrounding the prawns to the purple floral arrangements paying homage to the peacock, India's national bird.

Pumpkin was on the menu, too, with Tuesday's dinner coming just two days before Thanksgiving.

Hours before guests arrived and in keeping with tradition, Mrs. Obama previewed the glamorous table settings in the State Dining Room. That's often the venue for such dinners, but not this time.

Instead, in an effort to show Singh how much the U.S. values relations with his country, the Obamas decided to serve dinner in a huge white tent on the South Lawn, with views of the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial through clear panels.

It wasn't your everyday tent: This one had chandeliers suspended from the ceiling and beige carpet on the floor.

President Barack Obama, in his dinner toast, said the setting conjured images of India, where special events are "often celebrated under the cover of a beautiful tent." Singh, in turn, told the president he was overwhelmed by the Obamas' hospitality and said the president's election last year had been an inspiration to millions of Indians.

Magnolia branches native to both India and the U.S. adorned the tent's inside walls, along with ivy and nandina foliage.

Guests were seated 10 apiece at round tables draped in green apple-colored cloths and napkins, offset by the sparkle of gold-colored flatware and china, including service and dinner plates from the Eisenhower, Clinton and George W. Bush settings.

Floral arrangements of hydrangeas, roses and sweet peas in plum, purple and fuschia evoked India's state bird.

Mrs. Obama brought in award-winning chef Marcus Samuelsson of Aquavit, a Scandinavian restaurant in New York City, to help White House executive chef Cristeta Comerford and her staff prepare the largely vegetarian meal. Singh is a vegetarian.

Samuelsson said being chosen to help whip up dinner was both "overwhelming and humbling."

The culinary offerings included potato and eggplant salad, arugula from the White House garden, red lentil soup and roasted potato dumplings or green curry prawns. Pumpkin pie tart and pear tatin were for dessert; the pears were poached in honey from the White House beehive.

The entertainment lineup was stellar.

Singer-actress Jennifer Hudson and jazz vocalist and composer Kurt Elling, both Grammy Award winners from the Obamas' hometown of Chicago, were performing. Hudson also won an Academy Award for her role in "Dreamgirls." Indian musician and singer A.R. Rahman, who won two Academy Awards for the music in "Slumdog Millionaire," also was in the lineup.

Among the other guests: Hollywood moguls David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg. Guests with ties to India included spiritual adviser Deepak Chopra, director M. Night Shyamalan and PepsiCo chairman and CEO Indra Nooyi. Katie Couric of CBS News, Brian Williams of NBC News, Robin Roberts of ABC News and CNN Medical Correspondent Sanjay Gupta were among the media representatives invited. Oprah Winfrey was not on the list, but her best friend, Gayle King, was among the guests. Also there Obama friends Eric Whitaker and Martin Nesbitt, along with Obama's half sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, and her husband, Konrad; and Marian Robinson, the first lady's mother.

Every aspect of Tuesday's events was fraught with meaning and symbolism, from the flower colors to Mrs. Obama's clothing designers.

For the dinner, Mrs. Obama wore a sleeveless, gold and cream colored sheath dress with an overlay of silver and matching shawl by Indian-born designer Naeem Khan. At the State Dining Room event earlier in the day, the first lady wore a skirt by Rachel Roy, who is Indian.

The dinner also was a debut of sorts for florist Laura Dowling, who's been on the job less than a month.

There was an interesting testament to President Obama's personality and diplomatic style.
Fareed Zakaria reported on CNN, on his way to the party, that he had managed to talk to the Indian Prime Minister at Joe Biden's lunch earlier in the day. The PM told him that Mr. Obama was "very easy to talk to" and, this is significant, "a good listener". Interesting choice of words.
The "good listener" comment is often heard about the President from different quarters. I think even Hillary Clinton said that.
I think the Indian PM is very wise, and a good judge of character.
It is a pity that so many in the U.S., just because they disagree with the President politically, fail to appreciate these qualities, so important in a leader, that seem obvious to even foreign dignitaries.

This dinner wasn't just party, it was business that would benefit the United States.

One of my concerns is whether the members of The President's Own United States Marine Band and other staff were provided with some of the meal when they finished playing at the event - they worked hard for days

You shouldn't be concerned. From my own experiences in the military, they were
honored to be there and were provided with all they needed for a fine evening.

YA KNOW, THERE WAS NO ONE BETTER DRESSED THEN NANCY REAGAN......

That Dear woman dressed only in designer fashions, everyday, and she looked great in every one of her outfits. And we all loved seeing her wear her evening gowns at all their State Dinners, and they had quite a number of them,... remember!

Now why does the question as to the cost, or who's paying for Michelle Obama's gowns is coming up so much is beyond all reasoning.

Both the Obama's are professionals, who had the means to buy any dress she wanted before they moved into the WH ! And for someone to raise a question as to who's paying for her clothes is ridiculous. Ronnie and Nancy never got such scrutiny, neither did Jacky K, and later "O". So just leave the Obamas the H_ _ _ alone, and............ BUG OFF !
11:01 AM on 11/26/2009
maybe they ask because we are so close to going into a depression that lavish party's seem a little insulting to people who are unemployed or soon to becoming another homeless statistic.
01:35 PM on 11/26/2009
Wow. I didn't realize you weren't allowed to spend YOUR OWN money because someone else doesn't have a job.

Please explain how said person won't become homeless if Michelle doesn't buy a new dress.

Can't? That's what I thought.

You also can't explain how Obama could veto a bill that was signed into law when Bush was president. I know it's got something to do with that time machine he has hidden away in the Oval Office but . . . LOL!

Some hate for no other reason than simply because they know no other way.

The president and his first lady had a great coming out and beth looked elegant doing so.We should remember our mothers' teaching of either saying good or zipping it.

Dress was beautifful, but made her back look flabby. How much did the dress for ONE night cost taxpayers?

Why so many movie stars/singers?

I would guess that the dress was done gratis. If it wasn't I would sell for something in the 5 digits easily.

Strictly from a style perspective I really like her dress, but it could have been better tailored around the bodice. I quite like her hair and I think the multiple bangle bracelets look wonderful (and seem Indian inspired).

Hey, our President and our First Lady pulled off a coup so maybe you, my husband and I will reap the benifits their endeavors by being able to find decent jobs.
So many of the good jobs with benifits have been syphoned of overseas, many to India. There is a growing middle class in India and they have enormous spending power. If, through the influance of this State Dinner our nation realizes a few hundred jobs - and that's an extreemly low estimate - all the talent, research and effort put into this diplomatic event makes it worth the time, effort and cost.
Never forget that our President and our First Lady represent our nation, for better or worse the United States is judged by the tact or lack thereof by the world. President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and their staff pulled off their first State Dinner with elegance and poise.
Kudos.

The Roosevelts gave a dinner dance for their two sons and 60 young guests on December 30, 1934 with 250 guests coming in later to dance. During the depression??!! Young people dancing at the White House? Can we do a retrogressive impeachment? Let them eat Paste!
10:58 PM on 11/25/2009
According to the New York Times, Nov. 3, 1934, there were five state dinners and seven receptions planned by the Roosevelts for the 1934-5 season at the White House. There had also been five state dinners in the 1933-4 season. There was construction going on at the time which delayed the season by a month. So, apparently, diplomacy goes on at the White House during a depression.
02:16 AM on 11/26/2009
Yes...because Roosevelt did it during the depression, it's okay for Obama.

Yes...the state dinner was vital to diplomacy.
08:14 AM on 11/26/2009
No. It's OK for Obama because he's the president of the US. Accept it and move on.
10:47 PM on 11/25/2009
I just viewed a series of outifts/gowns for the First Lady by designer Naeem Khan and each and EVERY one of them are pitch-perfect! He seems to be the exact. best designer for Ms. Obama! She had restored style, luster, and glamour to the White House. Beautiful!!! Brava!!!!

I've only seen the gown pictured in this article and I would say exactly the same as you.

Funny, I haven't read any comments criticizing her wardrobe saying just terrible things about her. I believe for the most part they probably are stunned. Just beautiful.
10:46 PM on 11/25/2009
Well, I guess the Obamas have put us on notice that the Whitehouse is no longer adequate for their entertaining.

Look for construction to start on a Taj Mahal for the Obamas--nothing less would suit their egos.

During the Great Depression the White House had state dinners and we know that going to the movies was what helped keep peoples morale up. When John Kennedy and Ronald Reagan were Presidents we were in recessions and we know that their class and style boosted Americas morale. So any conservative, Republican naysayer who wants to complain about President and Mrs. Obama and their state dinner or her style, probably should study history and stop being so petty. Work part time and am far from middle class and I was happy to see some happy news for a change. And I also will note that how President and Mrs. Obama look at each other reminds me of how President and Mrs. Reagan looked at each other with love, affection and respect.

You create a Strawman Argument because you are unable to refute opinions about the "Let-Them-Eat-Cake" Obamas by honest methods.

Many Democrats are apalled and embarrassed at the lavish spending by the Obamas for their million-dollar celebrity-filled parties.

Obama has done nothing for our crippling unemployment, but eagerly sent more troops into his Afghanistan quagmire. In addition to the human tragedy he's now responsible for, as the troops he sent are klIIed or maimed for life, he's saddled us with--just for support of the troops he's sent --$64BILLION a year.

Yet we have to cut other programs to pay for the pathetic HCR Congress created, with no help from Obama but with lots of submarinng by Obama.

We wouldn't have to cut other programs, and HCR would have actually SAVED money, but Obama, in a secret backroom deal with pHarma, promised them the government would not try to negotiate for lower drug costs.

Basically, the drug industry can charge us, and our government, whatever they want.

So Obama asks Congress to take on more debt to pay for his Afghanistan quagmire, but for HCR it's out of the question.

We're in the worst economy since the Great Depression, and the Obamas continue to act like royalty of a prosperous nation.

We can't afford their squandering of our taxdollars. We can't afford Obama's playing servant to the defense industry and pHarma at a time when more American families are becoming homeless every day.

So, stop being a complete wet blanket... we are showing off our country.. and we have our best dress on.

Have some fiber. You will feel better.

FDR didn't have his first state dinner until December 21st of his first year, in honor of the VP. Most of the guests were members of the Cabinet.

From where I sit, as I see the anxiety of the American public, the sense of a lack of connection to average citizen Democrats like me who voted for Obama, to those other Americans across the political spectrum, it feels like the Obama that ran for president forgot about the rest of us.

Wouldn't some fireside chats assuaging the fears of the American public, explaining his plans and policies, be more appropriate before this star-studded gala last night?

FDR had his first fireside chat on March 12, 1933, On the Banking Crisis. In it FDR layed out his plans for reforming the banks, and he had three other fireside chats with the American people by the end of his first year. His second chat was detailing his plans, Outlining the New Deal. FDR's fourth chat, on October 22, 1933, was about the Currency Situation, an appropriate topic now for Obama after just returning from China.

Why not some soothing talks, to let all of us out here in the country hear from the leader we elected, reassuring us of what his plans are? We want to know that we are part of the plan to lift this country out of its recession and gloom. Symbols matter, and Obama should use his bully pulpit to let us in on his vision.
09:17 PM on 11/25/2009
During the Great Depression, FDR had a very, very lavish state dinner for the Queen & King of England.

Obama talks to the American people constantly and people like you complain he talks too much.

Never saitisifed.
09:32 PM on 11/25/2009
The problem with Obama is that all he does is talk, and he has broken so many promises, he can no longer be trusted.
