What's Your Reaction?

Disney's newest movie has a princess like no other. Tiana is the first black heroine in 71-years of the company's cartoon history. The film is an updated version of the Brothers Grimm tale "The Frog Prince" that takes place in the Louisiana bayou in the 1920s. The movie features the voices of Terrence Howard, Anika Noni Rose and Oprah Winfrey.

I don't know if I should be encouraged that a generation of black children will finally have the media portraying them as the good guy (or gal), or pissed off that it took this long for that to happen.

It's great that the movie stars a black princess, but I don't think it's that great. Doesn't she spend most of the movie as a frog? Yeah, not the most flattering of roles. Maybe they'll make another on where the princess stays human for the entire film.

The Princess Tiana is long overdue. I sincerely hope all girls will embrace in their rightful destinies and demand the utmost respect this princess and others portray.

When I saw the initial trailer for the lion king, all they had was James Earl Jones voice and the music. I said to my brother, who happened to be in the theater, Disney is doing a black movie. He said, they'll probably be animals. I said, no way. He said, bet on it. I had to buy him a steak dinner. This time they do part of it right. Just that, you know she's an animal for over half the movie. But hey, it is better than being an animal the whole time. Right?

I had the same bet with my sister and won. She bought me a designer bag. Disney is still managed by 1920 people.

The thing that gets me about Disney is that they'll have an Asian princess, a Middle Eastern princess, and a Native American princess but the characters at the Disney parks are white. What's up with that?

I was at Epcot Center (Florida) last week. There was an Asian young woman dressed as the character Mulan. She was outside the China display.
