Amar'e Stoudemire PETA Ad PHOTO: Suns Big Man Strips Down, Shows Tattoos

First Posted: 03/18/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 03:50 PM ET

Phoenix Suns power forward Amar'e Stoudemire has posed shirtless for a new anti-fur ad from PETA. Stoudemire's exposed chest and arms showcase his array of tattoos, accompanied by the ad text, "INK, NOT MINK." At the bottom, the ad reads, "Be comfortable in your own skin, and let animals keep theirs."

At PETA's web site, the Suns star says, "I wouldn't want to see anything cruel ... happen to any animals just for ... fashion." The site also has a video that includes footage of Stoudemire shooting hoops shirtless.

Hmm. Is that a LEATHER basketball that he has in his hands? Is he wearing LEATHER or plastic shoes as he promotes himself? I wonder where the LEATHER came from for his car seats....
Going to guess that perhaps his vegan diet has something to do with his constant injuries (except the eye, of course).
Grow up Amare and realize that you aligned yourself with CRAZIES and backpedal now before it hurts your image. I know I won't be buying any Suns tickets until you are gone, just like I still won't shop at KMart-sucks due to their use of Rosie and Penny. Spit in the face of common sense people, and we quietly retaliate.

Why is it that it's a taboo for a black man to show his full torso in an ad? Caucasian males are always in ads bare chested arms to the side while black males always have to cover their torso with an item like a ball or have their arms crossed. You rarely see their full torso. And when they do show the torso the background and tone of the picture is so dark you can't define any features. Just an observation.

Something I wouldn't have thought about Stoudemire. Great for him.

How about Aretha Franklin? She goes out and has so much fur on that it is easy to mistake her for some sort of bear!
Good for Mr. Stoudemire! (It doesn't hurt that he's built.)

good for stoudemire! i love seeing an african american athlete take such a stand. in the african american community there is virtually no stigma attached to owning fur; it harkens back to the old days when blacks were denied ownership of major items like homes and cars. fashion was an accessible way of showing status. it is still very common to see african american athletes wearing fur. stoudemire's willingness to pose for peta is groundbreaking. bravo!

Instead of perpetuating amateur psychoanalysis of an entire race, consider the hypocrisy that those who have never been embraced by the animal rights movement see. Those folks witness many in animal rights leadership who are blind to human suffering and will overlook this suffering to save an animal.

For example a few years ago PETA had a brazen and heartless campaign that compared the slavery of African Americans to the plight of animals. Google it!!

first of all, that is sociology. secondly i am speaking of my own people. if you don't like my "psychoanalysis" perhaps you should hit the history books or you can sit down for some nice oral history with my 90 year old grandmother. she can tell you about the heightened significance fashion played for her and her peers because they had few other means of exhibiting respectability and social status. thirdly, you can have problems with the abuse of animals without embracing peta if you wish; peta is merely one messenger on this particular social ill. to ignore the issue because you do not like the messenger is just childish.
