Chelsea Clinton Engaged To Marc Mezvinsky

First Posted: 07/15/2010 11:43 am Updated: 05/25/2011 2:45 pm

Chelsea Clinton is engaged to her longtime boyfriend Marc Mezvinsky, a spokesman for former President Clinton told ABC News.

People magazine got a hold of the couple's email to friends and family sharing the news. They're planning to wed next summer.

Engagement rumors were swirling earlier this year; Hillary Clinton shot them down in July.

"He's great. He's a great human being," Bill Clinton said of his future son-in-law.

Mezvinsky works at Goldman Sachs; his parents are both former members of Congress. His father pleaded guilty in 2002 to swindling dozens of investors out of $10 million after getting caught up in a Nigerian scam. Interestingly, his mother lost her seat in a conservative congressional district after one term in part because she chose to vote for President Clinton's first budget.

The couple became friends as teenagers in Washington and both attended Stanford University. They now live in New York, where Mezvinsky works and Clinton is attending graduate school at Columbia University's School of Public Health.

Watch our slideshow of the couple:

It is considered by many, of many religions that you should not marry outside your faith. I'm sure many of the Jewish and Christian faiths feel the same way. If Chelsea is truly a Christian, she should not marry a man who does not know Christ as Saviour.

The rich and powerful marry other rich and powerful. Your surprised? You think she would marry a janitor? Look at the Bush daughters. These people live in a different world than you and I. They stay in better hotels and they have better cars. They don't come home covered with dirt and they don't live in a three bedroom subdivision home. It doesn't matter if they are republican or democrat.
The world of the rich and powerful is very exclusive and frankly, you'll never be invited to the wedding.
Congratulations Chelsie, Congratulations Jenna and I promise to never even attempt to get past your security gates or sneak some champagne from your wedding.

Just think of how much influence this young man will have as a lobbyist for Goldman when he goes into a Senate office saying, 'Hi, I'm Bill and Hillary's Son-in-Law'

I agree with you. I find it disturbing how many connections Goldman Sachs has to the political machinery. And now one of their analysts is about to become part of the Clinton family. I wonder how long before this guy gets a promotion from Sachs for further strengthening the political ties.

When HRC's primary supporters were singing Chelsea's praises, it was pointed out that she'd done less public service than either Bush twin. They didn't do much, but Chelsea had done nada. Her career path: Stanford history BA, Oxford international relations master's and then, despite having neither an MBA nor ANY relevant experience, youngest hire at an extremely exclusive management consulting firm, McKinsey & Co. Very posh first job. From there she went, in 2006 to Avenue Capital Group - handling hedge funds in a company which also was extremely exclusive as to clients (the ultra rich), and also dealt in collateralized debt obligations, equity securities, etc. A terrific background to run for Senate as a Republican - not so much as a Democrat. One concluded Ms. Clinton had no interest in a political career.
She was attracted to a similarly profit-motivated young man, as well. Her long time boyfriend has doubtless made many millions already in his tenure at Goldman Sachs. Google the bio of his father, Edward. We had a lot of painful experience with him in Pennsylvania. As footnoted in the Wiki biography on him, Edward was described by prosecutors in 2001 as "a one man crime wave . . . elements of fraud in nearly every one of his business dealings since 1980." That's white collar crime - bank, mail and wire fraud. If he'd been working at Goldman Sachs, he'd never have been prosecuted.
Whence the sudden interest in public health for Ms. Clinton? Is it

My last sentence got cut off. It should read,
"Is it in fact an interest in running for public office?"

You surely know these young folks very well. FYI, you don't need an MBA to work at McKenzy

Goldman Sachs. Don't they make money off of mergers that may or may not be approved by government regulators. Don't they make money trading government bonds? Doesn't Goldman Sachs make money when a company gets a large government contract for a defense contract or the stimulus program? I'm sure this guy will make a few million in his first few years and then become a congressman. See the history of Rahm Emanuel and his history of making millions in a few short years on Wall Street. Then more money with FNMA. Its a template for politicians.

Not the biggest news in the world that Chelsea and her on and off boyfriend for the last 13 years finally got engaged, but it is news nonetheless I suppose.
