Windows 7 On Family Guy: Axed Clips Revealed (VIDEOS)

First Posted: 3/18/10 Updated: 5/25/11

The Microsoft / Family Guy saga continues.

As we reported here, Microsoft first announced that it would be teaming up with Seth MacFarlane's Family Guy to do a spot promoting Windows 7.

Then, Microsoft decided that Family Guy -- with its raunchy, un-PC riffs on deaf people, incest, and all -- wasn't a terrific fit for the Windows 7 brand.

Now Microsoft has decided to post the Windows 7 Family Guy spots after all, and released the nixed "endorsements" on its YouTube channel.

Watch the unaired Family Guy spots, and their shout-outs to Windows 7, in the clips below.

Some highlights: Stewie becomes 'leader of the world' thanks to Windows 7, Peter attempts to spell 'Windows 7' in a spelling bee, and Stewie praises Windows 7's ability to handle the most 'intricate and exhaustive' tasks (like drawing a picture of a bunny).

What do you think: was Microsoft right to pull the plug on its Family Guy promo, or would they have been fining airing the clips? Share your thoughts in the poll and comments section below.

Embarrassingly bad. Though not as bad as the Seinfeld windows commercials.

I defy you to find more than five commercials that actually *were* worse than the Seinfeld ads

Strange, but any stranger than "I'm a PC and W7 was my idea?" MS's ideas of how to advertize software seem as odd as their idea of how to write code for it.

I agree with the a lot of the comments below on the topic of "lameness", strategy, and misperception. I like to add; I don't remember Family Guy being used to sponsor products. I think it takes away from the shows unbiased sense of humor and their ability to be ironic.

I base part of my argument on the fact that though Windows 7 might be "It's powerful and easy to use",I don't know, I have to say that Windows has been relatively easy. However doing anything complicated or "intricate" it lacks, compatibility has been an issue. Some of the jokes were funny in an ironic sense, but the irony is lost in the true context of trial and error which would be the bases for a joke like those on Family Guy. Windows seems to be too new to know for sure if it's a garbage system. So, these jokes do not relate well as jokes yet and really seem more like the Network or Family Guy selling out.

wow, that's some deep hard-hitting analysis on a cartoon commercial right there.

What do you mean "too new"? The beta and RC were available for free to anyone for over a year, and the final release code has been available since the first week of August.

Honestly, I admitted I have no experience with the new Windows 7 and I can't think of anyone that has it. I think it could of been assumed I meant consumer response, I would back that statement up with; if they released it a year ago why are they saying it new today. Anyway Tv, cartoons, movies is what I do. If you haven't been a fan of Family Guy for awhile you might not see difference in the type of humor. I admit too, Microsoft took a couple light blows for the sake show, but Seth McFarlane punches a lot harder then that and commonly below the belt.

I think they would have been "fining" airing those clips.

After Jerry Seinfeld, this is the second time a comedy endeavor loses edge and credibility peddling these inferior products. Family Guy can be lame and it can be brilliant, but I don't think I've ever seen them do anything as lukewarm as this. And no, I didn't expect them to make fun of windows, I just expected at least a trace of a smile. No such luck.

It was a good move to not air the clips. And for good reason to my perspective.

From a strategic advertising point of view...It was better not to air it.

Most people wouldn't terribly take it seriously. Dubious MacFarlane and Company would really give any proper promotion to the product's actual merits anyway. Nevermind the ripping on Windows/Microsoft and everyone else they've done over the years. It was a bad fit.

BUT, they were right to pull it and then to put them up on YouTube.

There IS no such thing as bad publicity, to be seen ON Family Guy is to seem desperate for dollars and would fly in contrast to their show. putting ONLINE with Family Guy as a brand gathers attention and uses viral advertising. It was a fantastic way to reach the audience they wanted without buying the air time (I presume). The internet has the chance to reach more people than the show would- even via Hulu or FOX's site where you can just watch them online.

By being Microsoft the idea works, and wouldn't have worked better.

They were aired as regular commercials... on Fox... during family guy... The huffington post got this story wrong. But that was a great analysis!

Stewie may be cute, but I wouldn't take advice from him.

These ads are so lame that if they were a horse, they'd have to be put down.
10:36 PM on 11/30/2009
All I want to know is, did Seth McFarlane and Fuzzy Door get the money they deserved for making these clips, since Microsoft is reaping the benefits of the ads?
