NASCAR Goes Green (VIDEO)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 3/18/10 Updated: 5/25/11

One of the nation's most popular sports is going green. NASCAR, hardly synonymous with environmental innovation, can now claim that ⅓ of all its venues are recycling. The organization has also vowed that this green wave will reach every single remaining track within the next few years. From recycling 180,000 gallons of oil and fuel, to getting drivers to promote green habits, NASCAR is a suprising but interesting example of how all sectors are responding to environmental concerns.

The only way NASCAR can go green is to not have nascar racing anymore.

All Nascar needs is to go 100% ethanol in 2 years so engines can be adapted.
Fuel injection is needed to replace the carburetors. So they can start when they are hot.

Doesn't ethanol still produce greenhouse gases?

Won' the cars still have tires made of rubber? Many tires. Many many tires.

Why do we need this race? Is internal combustion engine technology still experimental? Do we really need races to test it? What is the purpose of nascar? Besides selling beer and cigarettes?

You might want to check the demographics. Heavy republican base, yes. Uneducated, not. The sport has a higher % of college grads as fan than many other sports. Plus, the simple economics prevent uneducated from coming to the races. You can easily drop a grand on a two day event at a minor venue. Go to a major event and double it.

thank you, Banned. Maybe a lot of the NASCAR fans I don't know are jerks, but the few NASCAR fans I do know are very nice people who consider themselves independent rather than Republican. NASCAR's move for green technology will encourage more blue collar folks to go green.

Although I consider myself a fan of the sport (Go Mark Martin!), it's stuck in the 60's, as far as the technology used in the cars is concerned. They're so paranoid of a competitive advantage that they force all the teams to use dumbed down technology.

Who cares if Joe Sixpack can't afford to start a team. Let's open it up to excellence and the cutting edge

Might I add the Indy 500 cars have been running on ethanol for the past several years. So Il'l call your Dale Jr. & raise you a Danica.

"Greenwashing" at its best. Just because I recycle an aluminum can on the way to use my private plane for a vacation flight, doesn't mean I am green.

No, at its best this will raise the awareness of the millions who attend NASCAR races and see them on TV. At best it will reduce waste and increase recycling. At best it will make more people aware of and get behind Climate Change legislation.

and at worst, it will have no effect.

Where is the down side here? NASCAR is not going to quit racing, fans are not going to quit driving to the tracks. Fans are not going to quit buying beer and soda and hamburgers and hot dogs, and all the other things sold in the concession stands complete with solid waste.

At worst, it will have no effect on the economy, the environment, NASCAR, the Track Owners, or the fans.

I'll give NASCAR credit when they start racing electric cars. Recycling at venues is something that should have been done years ago (I'm sure many of the venues have been recycling regardless, now NASCAR can give itself a pat on the back for making "all" venues recycling).
10:51 AM on 12/03/2009
How is an electric car that goes 40 miles per charge going to work in a series that runs 500 mile races? Brilliant!

If NASCAR really wanted to go 'green', I have a "GREEN" fuel additive that will reduce emissions up to 89%. 100% renewable synthetic esters.

Most of the fans turn green after 18 beers.

Myself included.
