Where do the numbers come from?

Google Zeitgeist explains that it studies the

aggregation of billions of queries people typed into Google search this year. We use data from multiple sources, including Insights for Search, Google Trends and internal data tools. We also filter out spam and repeat queries to build out lists that best reflect "the spirit of the times."

In determining the ranking of the top Google searches, Google also compares search volume across years:

In some cases, we list the "fastest rising" queries, which means we found the most popular searches conducted in 2009 and then ranked them based on how much their popularity increased compared to 2008. Conversely, "fastest falling" queries were very popular in 2008 but flattened in popularity in 2009.

Read the whole report at Google's Zeitgeist site, which also lists the fastest rising terms in "food and drink," as well as more detailed search reports by categories such as entertainment, news, "around the home," sports, and more.

Bing also recently released its top search terms for 2009, which can be viewed here.

Bing's top trending topics were the following:

1) Michael Jackson

2) Twitter

3) Swine Flu

4) Stock Market

5) Farrah Fawcett

6) Patrick Swayze

7) Cash for Clunkers

8) Jon and Kate Gosselin

9) Billy Mays

10) Jaycee Dugard

How could The King of Pop not be #1 top search?! He is totally irreplaceable!

There are valid questions to be asked.

However as of 06/12/09, Jordan Chandler has not yet made a statement regarding the alleged events of 1993.

For a substantive and detailed overview by a serious journalist regularly sourced by credible news agencies regarding these allegations against Michael Jackson go to the link:

http://charlesthomsonjournalist.blogspot.com/2009/11/charles-thomson-award-winning-writer.html

Michael Jackson is survived by three young children who will one day be presented with the horrific realities of the circumstances surrounding their father’s death. And despite the did he or didn’t he rumours currently swamping the internet, it is undoubtedly for them that the truth about the alleged events of 1993 must be revealed – once and for all.

Michael Jackson is still one of the most looked up people on TMZ's website. He still is getting most of the comments at TMZ. As far as Jon & Kate are concerned, why would anyone want to know anything about those two? What have they actually done for the world?? They're not even remotely interesting or entertaining in my book. I am so glad their show is over and their 15 minutes of fame is over. The same goes for balloon boy's parents. These people are nobodies, I don't understand why anyone would devote airtime to these people.

I'm not really surprised that Michael Jackson was the #1 most googled in 2009, he is probably the most interesting person who lived in the last 100 years. The man is still a mystery to most of us and you just can't help wanting to know about him. He was the PT Barnum of entertainment imo.

Mostly, I have no opinion about the year's top web searches. But I like that on Bing (which I've never used), Farrah Fawcett and Patrick Swayze both beat Jon & Kate. FF and PS are going to remain cultural icons for eternity, but I think that by this time next year, we'll have forgotten J&K.

John and Kate who?
09:26 PM on 12/01/2009
Strangely, Why is Twitter not on the top ten list of Yahoo's Overall Searches? And wow! google trends didn't matched the google's zeitgeist report this time.

Surprisingly, Perez Hilton nabs the most searched person for BING? this getting way too ridiculous and hilarious at the same time.

Judge it: http://bit.ly/bing-yahoo-google-top-searches-official

And suddenly all became clear now.

The Michael Jackson story was the biggest thing this year. Not "Jacko" HP, unless you want to start to look like the National Enquirer or The Sun. Tacky.

Hardly a surprise.

Michael Jackson's death is the biggest celebrity story of the 21st century so far.

MJ! Is there any wonder? Everything he done was always big and on a grand scale. Say what you want about him. But it you don't like him then do better. It's impossible to be that famous. That man is so famous it not funny. They said this man by himself generated about 9 billion dollars to the GDP over his lifetime. I seen how the press played down what he's accomplished and kept harping on his legal problems. That's the media for you. They make sure you don't look as good as you really are.

Micheal Jackson ...? Jackson, Oh yeah, he was some entertainer that passed away a long time ago

I'm 'Googling' Michael Jackson right now. It sounds so nasty but feels so right.
