Julia Corker Carjacked: Bob Corker's Daughter Crime Victim In D.C.

First Posted: 3/18/10 Updated: 5/25/11

Julia Corker

The oldest daughter of Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) was carjacked near the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. Wednesday night.

Julia Corker had a sore neck Thursday morning but she was otherwise not injured, said the senator's chief of staff said.

Police said Corker was stopped at a traffic light when one of the suspects knocked on the window. When she rolled it down, the man grabbed her by the throat, dragged her out of the car, threw her on the ground and drove off.

Her Chevy Tahoe's Onstar system helped police in Seat Pleasant, Maryland track down the car. Corker and his daughter were able to identify the suspects late Wednesday night.

The full statement from Corker's office:

On Wednesday evening around 9:15 p.m., Senator Corker's daughter, Julia, 22, was involved in a carjacking in Northwest Washington. She was driving to the apartment she shares with her father approximately nine blocks from the Capitol and stopped at an intersection when she was pulled from her vehicle, a Chevy Tahoe, and thrown to the ground. She did not suffer serious injuries. She is a bit sore and shaken up but doing well. Senator Corker was nearby and able to get to the scene of the incident very quickly. The perpetrators were caught shortly after, were positively identified, and are in custody in Seat Pleasant, Maryland. Senator Corker is very grateful that Julia was not seriously injured, that those who committed the crime were quickly apprehended, and he is extremely appreciative to the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, the Capitol Police, the FBI, and the Seat Pleasant Police Department for their quick response and professionalism.

No problem. Acorn will be around to help the guy when he gets released. On our dime.

I haven't read all the posts, but I suspect some will mention Republican, blame the victim in some fashion, or demand jobs for the carjackers so they don't have to steal.

Some may put a humerous comment in about Cash for Clunkers mistake.

Or hopefully, most may be wise enough to see this as just one more example of the zoos our politicians have created in every urban area of our country.

Our taxes (BILLIONS) wasted by politicians in the last 40 years on social programs. And this is the results we get! In every city across this nation. Violence, thieves, and absolutely no respect for themselves or others.

A culture that doesn't know the words to "Personal Accountability" or "Proper Parenting", let alone live by those values, but can spout the words of Jackson, Sharpton, and others with perfection.

It reminds me of the Wright video. Not what he said. But, the resounding applause and clapping the congregation gave him. Can we really expect the urban black culture to improve when they publicly support such idiots?

She rolled down the window? Really??? Unfortunately, this reminds me too much of my parents, who open the door far too readily to strangers, and have been scammed into giving rides and small amounts of money. Fortunately, they have not been injured or the victim of anything major, and I hope they have now committed to addressing people through a small window and not opening their door. People who did not grow up in social settings where survival is too intertwined with scamming do not comprehend treating people any differently than they would want to be treated themselves.

My own basic rule is that if anyone approaches me and makes a request that I would not make myself, I ignore them and, depending on circumstances, leave quickly. Given that I don't tap on strangers' car windows, I would not so much as make eye contact with anyone who does.

I have heard many people say that Corker and his family deserves "our support while he recovers from the close call his daughter just experienced" and that "at a time like this politics DON'T matter."

NO. Wrong.

A time like this?

Do you know how many families are having a "time like this" is hospitals across this country (if they are lucky enough to be in a hospital)?

45,000 people will DIE this year because of people like Corker. If he succeeds in his current goal, he will ensure that another 45,000 die next year and the year after that....

He gives no quarter to those who lack health care....I give no quarter to his daughter or his family.

Thanks for displaying your true compassion. Selfish, critical, and vindictive.
This is the mentality of the people supporting hcr? It makes your argument shallow and weak - compassion only when it benefits you or your cause? Do the hcr supporters a favor and be silent.

Me neither!

And, then he gets special treatment from police and the FBI! They probably called out the SS and the Marine Corps.

shocking crime epidemic. .... is it a time for a marshal law yet? police, army in the streets, to provide basic freedoms, like ability to walk, or drive, in the night across the town, without a fear of being assaulted?

They should have at least police decoy women officers walking at nights, and when assaulted, a backup would arrive.

How about providing jobs, healthcare, education, living wages?! because that would really help, .. and get rid of a culture of violence and crime, and celebration of violence and crime .. and all these sick violent vampire movies and videogames being marketed, shown to a young generation.

This young lady must have had Angels watching out for her! And thanks to technology, the criminals will have a long time to think about their sins. What is the penalty for carjacking in Washington D.C?
If there is one thing that should be taught to every kid in school, it is that if you commit a crime, you are going to get caught and will have to pay for it sometime in your life. These criminals were caught early, but sooner or later these jerks would have got caught.

I am so glad that this girl is safe. The young are so gullible. This is definitely NOT the time of the year to roll your window down for a stranger. (Actually at NO TIME should this be done. And since it seems that everyone has the right to be armed now, it's dangerous everyday!)

WOW, she is pretty. So glad she is okay. Hope she learned a good lesson.

It's sad that so many on this thread have such a fearful attitude. "Street smarts" may be something that someone from a big city may take for granted, but for those of us who grew up in smaller cities, it's much more common to give someone the benefit of the doubt. I assume that is why Ms Corker acted as she did. Obviously, she needs to rethink her values in terms of trusting people now that she lives in a high crime place like DC, and I do hope she is okay

Seconded. If you listen to the news you might as well stay home - it's WAY too scary out there.

Typical.

DC has one of the highest crime rates in America. And yet only when the daughter of a big-shot politician gets victimized it becomes an issue...

Yes, Typical.

She has health insurance too.

This is what happens when you overprotect kids. If you coddle them too much when they are young they never develop "street smarts". They then turn into clueless early 20 somethings. I have seen this happen too many times with my peers.

I'm glad she's ok.

She is darn lucky that her dad is a senator... otherwise, it would have been a much more lengthy process, and the perpetrators would still be on the loose, and she would not have her car back yet.
09:09 PM on 12/03/2009
you seem to have missed the fact that she is a white woman with blonde hair. Since that is the case, the police are on the perps like flies on %#@. If she was a black or hispanic woman, the perps would never have been found.
10:50 PM on 12/03/2009
If black or hispanic she would have to almost fight the police just to get them to file a report.
11:06 PM on 12/03/2009
yes you have to be very persistent if you are a minority. It also helps to know someone with clout in government to get the department to do their job.
11:19 PM on 12/03/2009
Stay persistent. There are a lot of lazy cops out there that will give Blacks and Hispanics the run around. There are some good ones that will help you out if stay persistent.
