Slim Fast Recall: Cans Recalled Nationwide Due To Bacteria

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J. — Unilever PLC's U.S. subsidiary says it has recalled all canned Slim Fast drinks because of the possibility of bacterial contamination that could cause diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.

The company says the probability of serious health problems is remote.

Unilever's U.S. arm, based in Englewood Cliffs, N.J., says the products were sold nationwide. They came in cartons of four, six or 12 steel cans, 11 ounces in size, and they were also sold individually. The recall, issued Thursday, covers all Slim-Fast products in cans, regardless of flavor, best-by date, lot code or UPC number.

The company said it is working to determine the production issue that caused the contamination. It has halted production.

I'm suprised that it hasn't been recalled for causing kidney stones -- because that's what it's been accused of doing to people for YEARS.

Is this another example of letting businesses regulate themselves? They don't even state what the bacteria in question is, or what events prompted the recall decision. Possibility remote? based on what? How many cases of illness have occurred? This story is 95% corporate damage control, 5% news.

My guess ... they're going to re-label and re-sell the cans as "Super-Fast Weight Loss Formula" with the slogan "You'll burn off more calories puking than you take in."

Homemade Slim-Fast/Ovaltine mix:

2.5 cups nonfat dry milk powder
1.5 cups Splenda granules, crushed fine in food processor
1 cup cocoa powder (dutch process)
1 tsp salt

Mix 1/3 cup per cup of milk (anything from skim to whole).

It's basically chocolate super milk with 50% extra milk solids. Splenda is 95% maltodextrin (the top ingredient in Slim-Fast powder) which is good at thickening cold liquids. You could crush 15 multivitamin tablets with the Splenda in the food processor if you want.

It's good on homemade granola or as hot cocoa, perhaps with a shot of espresso or Kahlua...

And it's amazing how people are conned into buying a "can of something" instead of eating a vegetable or fruit they've grown themselves in their backyard. We are so divorced from the sources of real food it's pathetic, but then again, we've brought it on ourselves and the kind of society we've developed and embraced. Can you magine what kind of exercise you could get from working a garden? Oh well, it's hard work...much harder than marinating in front of the TV every night after sitting on your arse all day in the office or sitting in your vehicle all weekend driving from shopping point A to shopping point Z.

The FDA has a live feed for recalls. I'm amazed there are products recalled almost daily.
