HIV-Positive Man Injects Sleeping Wife With His Blood, Infecting Her

A 35-year-old HIV-positive man in New Zealand injected his blood into his wife while she was sleeping, thereby infecting her with the virus, court documents have revealed.

According to a report in New Zealand's Sunday Star-Times, the man did it so that his wife would start having sex with him again, as she had refused to do so out of fear of contracting the disease. He gave her the virus by pricking her with a sewing needle tainted with his blood.

More details from Sky News:

In the documents, the wife described how, in May, 2008, she found a sting-like mark on her left thigh and two days later awoke to a stinging feeling in her leg.

She said: "I got up... and I flicked the blankets... I looked at (the husband) and he was wide awake."

The wife asked him if he had pricked her and he said, 'No'. But she later found evidence of "blood sprinkles" on their duvet, which she said her husband tried to hide from her.

The husband is currently in prison awaiting sentencing, and faces up to 14 years in jail.

That said, if a man said some of the things about women that have been said about men on this thread, he would be forever branded a misogynistic animal.

Men AND women all over the world do horrible things to each other every day. It's part of our flawed human condition and not one that is necessarily gender biased.

First off people with no medical knowledge need to get some before you post or shut up. HIV/AIDS infection are still deadly. Sure some people die of old age and have HIV but vast majority still die from the opportunistic diseases AIDS causes. Some people are diagnosed with terminal cancer but somehow survive beyond all odds. This is the exception not the rule. For those saying meds are good have never seen them work. They cause horrible side effects. You may be able to survive with HIV/AIDS but you don't live. For a man to do this to a wife he is supposed to love is no different than pushing her off a bridge or a bullet in her brain. For everyone who says get with the 21st this is 21st century information. Anyone who doesn't believe HIV/AIDS is not deadly and no big deal are f@#$&^g stupid plain and simple. You people are the morons who spread it thinking it ok cause it manageable. It manageable until some simple yeast infection or common sinus infection runs rampant in your body and you can't fight it because you have no immune system because HIV/AIDS decimated your white count. For the person who said same bug same medicine, HIV/AIDS can mutate so fast, even direct contamination from one person to another. Also doesn't mean drugs that work for one person will work for another. Condoms reduce transmission but are not 100% safe.

If you ever get exposed, go to the doctor immediately. With early treatment, it can prevent the virus from taking hold and prevent permanent infection. There should be more education about this.

President Booth: While the CDC does report that latex condoms when properly used greatly decrease the likelihood of acquiring HIV from intercourse, condom use does not make one bullet proof, so to speak. It is important that people to understand this.

Sensational stories like these help keep stigma alive for the tens of millions of people worldwide with HIV. It perpetuates fear and ignorance and in the end keep the virus spreading because stories like these make people fearful of getting tested for fear of rejection, stigmatization and possible criminalization.If a person tests positive they are less likely to infect someone inadvertenly and can practice safe sex and also get treatment. The story is troubling but rare and has many unanswered questions and detail. It portrays HIV people as toxic and sinister. From the lynch mob mentality of many of the posters here nothing will be learned or gained and many innocent people who have enough to deal with will be harmed.
