Honduran Coup Regime's Claims Of A Fair Election Are Fraudulent: Report (VIDEO)

First Posted: 03/18/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 03:50 PM ET

The Real News Network calls into question the validity of the November 29 Honduran elections, which have been regarded as "clean and fair" by outlets such as the New York Times, in a new video report.

Producer Jesse Freeston argues that, despite international support and Western media approval, the election of the new Honduran government was not as fair as it appeared to be. "The facts are: that these elections were neither clean nor peaceful," he argues.

Watch for yourself to see if you feel these post-coup elections were as fair as had been widely reported.

Congratulations on going forward with your project to take Honduras backwards. It takes more than elections to make a democracy and this one stinks, before during and after. From

HONDURAN GAY ACTIVIST WALTER TROCHEZ ASSASSINATED

Walter Trochez 25 years old, a well-known LGBT activist in Honduras
an active member of the National Resistance Front against the coup d'etat there, was assassinated on the evening of December 13, shot dead by drive-by killers. Trochez, who had already been arrested and beaten for his sexual orientation after participating in a march against the coup, had been very active recently in documenting and publicizing homophobic killings and crimes committed by the forces behind the coup, which is believed to have been the motive for his murder. He had been trailed for weeks before his murder by thugs believed to be members of the state security forces.

In an open letter documenting this wave of political assassinations of Honduran queers he'd written last month entitled "Increase in hate crimes and homophobia towards LGTB as a result of the civic-religious-military coup in Honduras,” Trochez had written that "Once again we say it is NOT ACCEPTABLE that in these past 4 months, during such a short period, 9 transexual and gay friends were violently killed, 6 in San Pedro Sula and 3 in Tegucigalpa." ...

Thank you to the RealNews for originally hosting this video regarding the fraudulent elections in Honduras. Unlike most of the comments and news articles, this video actually exhibits evidence for the story that it tells.

Under the post-coup circumstances that exist in Honduras, most of the international community recognized the ingredients did not exist for a "fair and clean" electoral outcome that would be respected internally or internationally. The expedient acceptance of the outcome by the US, and the democrats who "monitored" the election when other respected observers declined to be in attendance, is a travesty. The United States has a long history of subverting democracy for it's own commercial purposes in Latin America. The position the US takes on this matter is an important signal to Latin America, and it currently looks as though the US' tacit acceptance of the new government is a signal that the initial honeymoon between the US and South and Central America is over. As Brazil's President Lula stated, "If this state of affairs is allowed to remain, democracy will be at serious risk in Latin and Central America." This instability and insecurity is the real travesty that is growing out of the post-coup/election in Honduras.

Nice video... denies what hundreds of observers and media stated the night of the election with no evidence... Would not call it news...

The video has several errors and is definitely slanted. They show videos of the marches of the *resistencia* but none of the several marches with 100,000+ people in different cities of the country that were demanding that Zelaya desist from his intentions of reforming the constitution.
.
The reporter visited one polling place (with several stations) and based on that affirms his claim that around 33% voted. I guess it depends on the neighborhood because I know several people who support Zelaya (but still went to vote because they consider it a civic duty) tell me that for the first time in their lives, they had to wait in line to vote. One told me that he waited for over an hour.
.
I visited 2 polling places early Sunday morning and the lines were normal. Based on my previous experience, I had estimated that turnout was about the same as the last few elections (+/- 50%)
.
He also fails to mention that public assemblies are forbidden under Honduras electoral law for 3 days beginning at 6 am the day before the elections and ending at 6 pm the day after the elections. Those marchers in San Pedro were breaking the law and they knew it, they wanted videos of the soldiers attacking the *peaceful* marchers. The soldiers held off for a long while until the marchers blocked a main artery of San Pedro..
.
The RealNews is slanted as are most media articles.

Hello Jesse,

We were just told to watch your video on the Honduran elections.
Troubling. You sound like a nice young man and we hope this video was not made up.
On the other hand, if your video is True, the World is in a lot more trouble than it knows.

As for the New York Times, et al, you may be glad to hear some of us do not read their newspapers any more where once we were big fans. Plus~ everybody's saying the day is not far when media ownership, like the financial system, will be coming apart at the seams. Yay??

You know, perhaps, you need to ask Goldman Sachs for help with the Coup Makers. Apparently, they're all about doing "G-ds work." and the poor G-d fearing Honduran people are truly in need of His help, right.... Eh?

I am glad the US could profit a little from this. Selling LRADs after testing them on us in Pittsburgh.

While the Honduran oligarchy celebrates their "victory", you have to wonder how many guns they keep under their pillows at night when the sleep.

The board has been set for a civil war. Now what?

We cannot expect a fraudulent dictatorship to run free and fair elections without some heavy monitoring from other organizations.

Amnesty International has been documenting abuses of this government for the past months. The surprise would have been if the election would have been clean as the atmosphere was already poisoned.
