As The World Turns

NEW YORK — Procter & Gamble, the company responsible for the phrase "soap operas," is out of the daytime drama business after 76 years now that CBS is making "As the World Turns" stop spinning.

The network announced the cancellation on Tuesday, the day "As the World Turns" broadcast its 13,661st episode. Its last episode will air next September, CBS said.

It's the second daytime drama CBS has canceled in a year, after "Guiding Light." They were the last two produced by a subsidiary of Procter & Gamble, the company for which the term "soap operas" was created because it used the shows to hawk products like Ivory soap and Duz laundry detergent.

Daytime dramas have been fading as a genre for years with more women joining the work force and the increased number of channels offering alternatives like news, talk, reality and game shows. In tough economic times, paying casts, producers and writers proved prohibitive to networks when there were cheaper alternatives.

The cancellation will leave CBS with only two daytime dramas: "The Young and the Restless" and "The Bold and Beautiful." ABC has three soaps left and NBC one.

Through the years, actors Marisa Tomei, Meg Ryan, Parker Posey and James Earl Jones have appeared on "As the World Turns." The show follows families in the Illinois town of Oakdale.

"It's a hell of a Christmas present," said actress Eileen Fulton, who will mark 50 years playing the character Lisa Grimaldi on the show. Her character has been through nine marriages and Fulton was hoping for a 10th before the signoff.

"I'm just very sad," she said. "I'm sad for all of the people who work out there in Brooklyn (where the show is filmed). We're a family. I hate to be split up. It's like a divorce."

Story continues below

Brian Cahill, senior vice president and managing director of the P&G subsidiary TeleNext Media Inc., said the company is actively seeking a new outlet to carry the show.

TeleNext said the same thing about "Guiding Light," which went off the air in September, but has been unable to find a new home. Keeping the show alive online has been discussed, but that's an alternative where cost may prove prohibitive.

CBS' move was not entirely unexpected, said Carolyn Hinsey, columnist for Soap Opera Digest. The network and Procter & Gamble were facing pressure to make cheaper shows, but how producers decided to spend their money – instead of just how much – contributed to the show's demise, she said.

Specifically, actress Martha Byrne left "As the World Turns" last year in a contract dispute. Byrne had played Lily Snyder from 1985 to 1989, then rejoined the cast in that role in 1993; she also played Lily's long-lost identical twin sister from 2000 to 2003.

That was a particularly damaging loss, Hinsey said.

"You lose the heart of the show and people walk," she said.

ABC seems most committed to the genre's future, she said. It is moving "All My Children" to a new studio in California and is investing in high-definition photography, she said.

Procter & Gamble first began producing soap operas in 1933 with the radio show "Ma Perkins," and has made a total of 20 such programs in its history.

Please find a way to save ATWT!! I remember watching "As The World Turns" since 1965, when I was 4 years old. My grandmother and I would watch the show every day. When I went to college - I would run back to my dorm room in time to watch - it was like a piece of home when I was so far away. In 1984, I was newlywed and my husband bought our first VCR - just so I could record ATWT while I was at work. Now, 45 years have past and I have been watching all along. Now, my trusty TiVo records this show - and I savor each episode while I get ready to go to work each day. This show is truly so much better than anything on prime time TV. I wish I understood how you make the decision to cancel a show - is it based upon TV commercial/ad sales? I will keep hoping that you find another source for this fabulous show - you will surely have many disappointed fans!!

Oh, and another thing, the viewers and fans of As the World Turns should send a letter to this address: As the World Turns Fan Club - 1268 East 14th Street - Brooklyn, NY, 11230. You can also email As the World Turns at CBS.com. Please, CBS is not just losing me as a viewer, they're losing millions of people as viewers and fans. Don't let this thought by pass through your head, do whatever you can to keep As the World Turns spinning. Thanks.

I can't believe this!! What is this world coming to? First the Light goes out. Now the World will stop turning.......and Fox has canceled production of Saving Grace! What is wrong with people?? They say soaps are coming to an end because more women are joining the work force so ratings are going down. No ratings, no money to produce. Did anyone stop to think that maybe in this day of technology people are recording their favorite soaps so that they don't miss out on anything?? Really?? Who ever heard of such a thing?? Hmmmm.....maybe we should take that into consideration and try to find a way to track those numbers. GREAT IDEA!!! I remember watching soaps with my mom when I was little. Ryan's Hope, GH, and All My Children. But I found GL and ATWT and have been an avid fan ever since. Even when I was working I had my VCR set every day so I didn't miss out. How can P&G do this to us? I know it is only a soap opera, but it takes a little bit away from my hectic, yep boring and hum drum life and in a way keeps me from going stir crazy.

Also......I have read all the posts on this and I have something to say to those of you that are "bashing" us soap lovers. You say the cancellation of these shows is a good thing. You say we need to "get a life". Well I have to say get a life yourselves because you don't have much of one if you are on here bad mouthing us. You do what you want and watch what you want and leave the rest of us alone. If you don't watch the show then why are you commenting here anyway?!?!?!?!

This is the most insane thing I have ever heard. Cancelling the best soap opera of all time is not the conclusion to anything. Bold and the Beautiful, & The Young and The Restless are senseless. I have never seen anything more annoying then those two soaps. If CBS cancels As the World Turns, I will not watch CBS ever again. Their channel can fail itself on their behavior. If CBS wants to be that conceited to the point of cancelling As the World Turns, I will honestly go mad. The thought of not seeing Michael Park and Maura West everyday, makes tears form. It really does stress me out to see the best soap, that can connect to the reality of the viewers, going off the air. As the World Turns should not stop spinning.

I can't believe it. ATWT is the best soap opera. I've watched it for 26 years, my boss got me into it and his wife got him into it. I look forward to coming home from work to find out what is going on in Oakdale. Aw, I'm so sad.

Here's a novel idea if anyone with any sort of power actual reads these. 2.5 million viewers can't possibly be something to squawk about. How about you air new episodes on SoapNet or another On Demand channel and simply charge people a weekly or monthly fee. I know I would pay 1$ a day to view my soap and I'm sure many others would too. I can't believe 2.5 million dollars a day would not fund a soap and it's production costs.

Screw Proctor and Gamble and all the other advertisers. They constantly kill shows by making every decision about making money. P&G has already been responsible for the demise of many other daytime shows including Another World which was one of the best.

I can't believe 54 years shouldn't count for some kind of loyalty, but I suppose the actors have to pitch in and stop demanding more money and make it work. Bottom line is greed seems to kill all good things on this planet.....but hey, we're talking soaps here, and I believe this is a reoccurring theme. Gee, maybe practice what you preach.

Oh no, a soap opera is cancelled? Why, what will I do without an hour of mindless, sleazy crapola on TV portrayed by the worst actors one could ever dig up?

6.) Don't change a core character. You can certainly give them edges they didn't have before, or give them a logical reason to change their behavior. But when the audience says, "He would never do that," then you have failed.

7.) Build new characters slowly. Everyone knows that it takes six months to a year for an audience to care about a new character. Tie them in to existing characters. Don't shove them down the viewers' throats.

8.) If you feel staff changes are in order, look within the organization first. P&G (Procter & Gamble) does a lot of promoting from within. Almost all of (its) producers worked their way up from staff positions, and that means they know the show.

9.) Don't fire anyone for six months. I feel very deeply that you should look at the show's canvas before you do anything.

10.) Good soap opera is good storytelling. It's very simple.

The sad, tragic cancellation of "As the World Turns" is a microcosm of what is truly wrong with daytime TV in general, and the soaps in particular. The network suits and creative powers-that-be are not listening to what viewers want to see.

If the soaps are to still survive as a genre, they need to heed the pointers given by ATWT's late, great head writer Douglas Marland on how not to wreck a show http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Marlandd):

1.) Watch the show.

2.) Learn the history of the show. You would be surprised at the ideas that you can get from the back story of your characters.

3.) Read the fan mail. The very characters that are not thrilling to you may be the audience's favorites.

4.) Be objective. When I came in to ATWT, the first thing I said was, what is pleasing the audience? You have to put your own personal likes and dislikes aside and develop the characters that the audience wants to see.

5.) Talk to everyone; writers and actors especially. There may be something in a character's history that will work beautifully for you, and who would know better than the actor who has been playing the role?

(to be continued).

I've watched ATWT since I was five..for over thirty years. I am so sad that this show is being canceled. First Guiding Light and now this. It saddens me because these shows were a part of my youth, my teen years, college years, grad school years, early marriage and now my 13 years of marriage..all that time its been there.

i felt the same way as you do now after Princess Di died, when Siouxsie & the Banshees, the Cocteau Twins, and Dead Can Dance broke up. and this summer when Michael Jackson died Generation X, like preceding generations, is seeing staples of it's youth pass away at a faster rate now. as the first generation of the digital age we seem to be having a slightly more difficult time letting go of the past than previous generations because much more of our past is preserved and easily accessible, making the past seem not so long ago as it actually is.

having said all that, i've decided to hold off on having a mid life crisis until Depeche Mode breaks up. :)

While this news is sad, some of the posts are sadder. I am not sure how many of you are active soap viewers, however I want to make a few points:
- I understand the argument that this picture may lead some to believe that the Nuke storyline (Luke and Noah) is the reason for the cancellation of the show. Personally, I would have chosen a screen shot that depicted the history of ATWT, showed some of the prominent families, but the reality is that the Nuke storyline is the most popular storyline right now. Further, I would be hard pressed to believe that this storyline killed the show, because it wasn't much of one in the first place - started out good, fizzled out.
- There is a demographic shift in the world of soaps. This was originally watched mostly by stay at home mothers and grandmothers - their initial purpose was to sell soap. Those mothers and grandmothers made their children/grandchildren watch and raised another generation on soaps. You would be surprised how many straight men watch the show because of this. The problem is that these shows are watched by older women, and gay men - who are not the desired demographic.

They still have numbers that cable would kill for, however they aren't targeting the demographic and aren't getting the advertising dollars. This is all dollars and sense.

How sad that you are not living in reality land. Do you not realize that Guiding Light sunk in the gay theme, as is OLTL. Now they had decided to not only make Luke gay, but flaming. Even my gay friends stopped watching due to the lack of reality. The character of Luke is "acting" like a love sick jealous teen age girl, not a lucrative business man. Years ago they had a friend of Barbara's on the show that was gay. This was portrayed with class and maturity, and it was accepted, and the show thrived. And demographically speaking, the show is watched by women of all ages, not older women. Until my grandmother passed recently we had four generations of ATWT viewers. And until Luke switched teams, they also had men between the ages of 24-40, probably due to the lack of work. Make some drastic changes, Kill off Luke , Noah turns to Mattie, and Allie needs to awake from the James Stenbeck nightmare. A good way to kill off Luke would be to hook him up with the good little gay doctor that is so full of anger. That would get rid of him too, jail. And Allie will marry Kasey. They took a lot of bad turns going down the James road again. Chris is a good perspective for Katie, but the memory of Allie in his head...
