Obama Nobel Peace Prize (PHOTOS): President, First Lady In Oslo

First Posted: 03/18/10 06:12 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 03:55 PM ET

President Obama arrived in Oslo Thursday to receive this year's Nobel Peace Prize, becoming the first sitting president in 90 years, and just the third ever, to win the award. As the AP noted of his acceptance speech, he "entered the pantheon of Nobel Peace Prize winners Thursday with humble words, acknowledging his own few accomplishments while delivering a robust defense of war and promising to use the prestigious award to "reach for the world that ought to be."

Check out some great photos of Barack and Michelle from their visit to Norway.

Excerpt from an overheard conversation in the Oval Office.

"I hope my supporters don't figure out I'm a Republican before re-election," said Obama
"Don't worry," assured Rahm, "That group is pretty slow on the uptake. We will deep into the second term before those cl0wns figure it out."

Reportedly, both then laughed heartily.

Obama is a more efficient war salesman. Giving him a Peace price is shockingly Orwellian (the Peace Ministry, minipax) .

I lef the GOP because of its continued pursuit of this disastrous and counterproductive escapade in South Asia.

Moreover, although I voted for Obama against the doddering McCain, I will not now remain silent because it's a "progressive" president pursuing policies that might best be described as fascist and imperialist, even if they are carried out in concert with the international community.

My family has a long history of service to the military, but at this juncture, while I still honour and respect our service men and women, given our current foreign policy, I would urge anyone considering a career in the military NOT to enlist.

Obama now has enough blind support among his flock, and the world, to fully destroy our civil rights.

Agreed.

It is time for anti-war activists of the right, the center and the left to put their differences aside and join in common cause against a war that will do little more than swell the profits of Halliburton and Blackwater.

Fanned.

A CIC's primary role is to protect the country from those that aim to do us harm. He did nothing to cause 911. Or the current rebuilding of terrorist cells in Afghan, Pakistan, Somalia... .The split second he were let-up and there's an attack on the homefront, he'll be further vilified by right and left for being soft. Asleep at the wheel...I expect the neocon trolls to spread their seeds of hate... But the left is giving the right a run for their money. I'm so sick of the progressives...Every day...Whining like spoiled brats.

Obama gave a strong, sober, yet humble speech that illuminated the paradoxical factors associated with keeping the peace in a chaotic world. It was also smart and gratifying to hear him tell our NATO allies that they need to step-up and play a greater role...I predict when the dust settles, this man will be remembered as one of the best presidents to lead America.

This was not just a speech. This was a re-positioning of US foreign policy, away from the Bush doctrine and towards an international cooperation. It is based on a realistic assessment of the balance between hard realities we face as humans and the best ideals we can aspire to.

That he articulated this in the context of accepting a Nobel Prize makes this really interesting.

There are a lot of people with small perspectives looking for something snarky to diminish this with, but it really rises to a great statement of perspective, embracing history and the future.

This is really what made me feel so depressed when Bush spoke. He was always being pretty small.
Obama is able to grasp the full dimension of our predicaments and our aspirations. I look forward to seeing how he negotiates this through his two terms. Right now, he is still having to deal with undoing a great deal of damage that Bush created.
01:19 PM on 12/10/2009
Yeah, good luck with that "international cooperation." Look at how much cooperation we have already gotten from our allies.

That would be . . . .

none.

Obama is a manchild. Naive, narcissistic and, ultimately, ineffective.

MANY thanks!

A superb set of pix, and meaningful after seeing BHO close up here in Berlin...

If he can't make things work, nobody can in dysfunctional, negative driven US politics

My favorite is of King Harald's jubilation as he reaches out to greet BHO in the palace reception!

Also, Michelle is a great credit to the US. And glad to see Valerie there for her moral support.

I thought he was very humble when he accepted the Prize. Everyone is saying that he should have declined the honor. Seriously? Would you turn down the Nobel Peace Prize if it was offered to you?
12:51 PM on 12/10/2009
Yes, he was very humble as he declared his right to rule the world, by force if necessary.

Bush gave a speech?
08:37 PM on 12/10/2009
The H8ters said it was impolite to cancel lunch with The King but, it wouldn't been impolite to accept The Nobel Peace Prize. They all are just feeling guilt from the past 8 years and doing all they can to slight this President because of what they have done. Congratulations President Obama.

I don't feel hate for anything except...the last eight years...People who discuss politics always have, that's what we do. That by no means makes most of us Bush Supporters, Gore won the first election, and Kerry probably won the second, I'm just not feein' the Bush love here.....For those who find the tone of these discussions a bit rough, I suspect you just weren't paying attention before now. Politics has a long history of discussion and disagreement, it's another American Sport, always has been. Politics is not for the faint of heart.

0Bama is a …….. pawn in the hand of the military-industrial-Congressional complex Eisenhower warned us about in 1956. The US has FAILED TO PREVAIL in all 3 of it’s major operations since WW 2 ended. THIS is the result of the strategic incompetence of our now ‘professional” military.
