Celebs Urged To Help Dump Hadassah Lieberman

Hadassah

Last week, the progressive blog Firedoglake called on Susan G. Komen for the Cure to drop Sen. Joe Lieberman's wife Hadassah as its "Global Ambassador," given her ties to the insurance industry. Now they're calling on the celebrity backers of the cancer-fighting non-profit to help.

"We are asking Ellen DeGeneres, Christie Brinkley and other high-profile celebrities who are associated with Komen to demand that no more money raised for cancer treatment be given to Hadassah Lieberman or any other ex-Pharma/Insurance strategists," said Firedoglake's Jane Hamsher, a breast cancer survivor, in a statement. "People who are racing for the cure wouldn't be racing to pay Hadassah Lieberman money, especially if they knew her ties to the same corporations that are blocking women's health reforms currently being debated in Congress."

Hadassah Lieberman has worked as a consultant for Pfizer and APCO and worked on health care and the pharmaceutical industry at the lobbying firm Hill & Knowlton.

The petition was directed at the following celebrities involved in Komen for the Cure: Aimee Teegarden, Andie MacDowell, Christie Brinkley, Cynthia Nixon, Ellen DeGeneres, Gloria Gaynor, James Denton, James Woods, Jennifer Tilly, John Ondrasik, Kimberly Locke, Marcia Cross, Mimi Rogers, Neil Patrick Harris, Trisha Yearwood, and Vida Guerra.

If Hadassah Lieberman is so committed to the cause of breast cancer, why isn't she donating her time to this "non-profit" instead of lining her pockets with a salary presumably paid with money gained from tax-deductible contributions.

typical despicable Repressive reaction
10:42 PM on 12/17/2009
What's despicable is that Joe and Hadassah are living high on the hog on lobbyist money and non-profit donations while women are dying of breast cancer because they can't afford to see a doctor.

Senator Lieberman is a courageous man and is voting his conscience. His decision is also logical and reasonable. 61% of Americans also agree with him and the number is growing. The Brits and other countries are taking it in the neck with their forms of socialized medicine. It does not work! Big Government inherently will never work because individuals serving such a system lack the motivation to produce efficiently. If you are familiar with the history of the Mayflower Pact, it initially failed when everyone contributed to and took from the "common storehouse." The slackers contributed little. Only when each family was given their own plot of land did they have the incentive to produce, and the community was successful. Compare the former East and West Germany. Compare the satellite images of the lights from North and South Korea at night. And compare the dignity and freedom of men and women who have lived in both worlds. Or, simply ask those who have escaped from repressive regimes.

Ok this post confused me.

Are you trying to say that the centralized medical systems like we have in Australia, England, New Zealand, France etc etc etc and Israel (Paid for by the US apparently) is somehow comparable to communist North Korea? I don't see the connection.

Hmmm I vote, we are a democracy, I don't feel oppressed.

Keep your dignity while your children and poor people die. Ill pay some taxes and get health care that everyone can afford. There is no dignity in dying from treatable diseases.

Sam, you really need to get out of the U.S. a little more and talk to some people. Ask a few Canadians if they would like to convert to a U.S. style health care system. You will get some big laughs.

This is all about Hamsher's hatred for the Libermans and using her blog as a weapon because she couldn't beat Joe in the election.
07:24 PM on 12/15/2009
I signed the petition and sent FDL 10 bucks.

Enough!

and I sent $$$ to Lieberman for being a man of principle
11:13 PM on 12/17/2009
A man of principle who betrayed the people who nominated him to be vice-president? What principle is that?

This is even low for the lib dems. To blame Hadassah for how her husband's opinion on health care reform is infantile. Apparently she has been working to raise money for breast cancer for a while and it means a lot to her. This is just a mean, vicious attack on her because some do not agree with her husband's opinion. I'm willing to bet that 99.9% of the people attacking her on here do not do a thing to support breast cancer victims or research. This is just hate-spewing pure and simple.
04:32 PM on 12/15/2009
It has nothing to do with her husband. She works for a lobbying firm for big pharma.

So you raise money with one hand while supporting the insurance companies that are strangling us with the other hand and somehow this is mean? This is a perfect strategy if you ask me and frankly, Leiberman is doing more to hurt the health of women in this country than any single member in the senate right now. He should be ashamed and I'll not back Komen myself until Hadassah is out. No more cereal with the pink label, etc. etc.

I'd imagine she's just like me: she doesn't hate pink, she dislikes it when she donates money to causes only to find out that the money doesn't go for those causes, but instead goes to pay a lobbyist that works contrary to the cause you are donating to!

The Democratic Party will enrage and lose a whole generation of voters if they mandate young healthy voters to buy into their "Fathers" garbage health plans !! This is not "Change to Believe In ".

You are very correct, but this is a good thing in disguise. It might open way for a third party in the next twenty years. Being a young man in modern day America is nothing like it was in our fathers' and grandfathers' time. It seems we now live in a country that doesn't hold it's youth in high regard. You can see this in the health care debate, no one is bringing up young 20 yr. old people getting out of college taking low paying jobs with no benefits, and with absolutely no means of health care.
Apparently we aren't the future!
10:17 PM on 12/15/2009
Exactly, all that while trying to pay off the loans for that education. It's really feeling like a new form of indentured servitude.
10:53 PM on 12/17/2009
You are absolutely right. This is not health care reform. This is a health insurance mandate to force healthy people into private insurance. This is a set of TAX PENALTIES. There is not public option. No real choice. Anti-trust exemption for insurance companies remains in place. No cost control measures. No medicare buy-in. Joe Lieberman has ruined this bill. Wait. No. The Democratic leadership has allowed Joe Lieberman to ruin this bill.
