First Posted: 03/18/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 03:55 PM ET

The first trailer for Ridley Scott's "Robin Hood" has been released and it looks to be a classic Scott epic filled with lots of gritty violence. Starring Russell Crowe, who Scott worked with in his previous film "Gladiator," as the legendary archer and Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian, the film is scheduled to be released May 14, 2010.

More from IMDB here. What do you think: does it look better than the classic version with Kevin Costner? Let us know in the comments.

I like Ridley Scott and I like Russel Crow. For now I wouldn't mind seeing it in the theaters.

Personally, I am still waiting for the "classic" version of the legend of Robin Hood.
The Kevin Costner version is the "Prince of Feebs."

"The classic version with Kevin Costner"? Silly me. I thought the classic version was with Errol Flynn and the turgid version was with Kevin Costner.

Russel Crowe should rob from the bankers and give to the poor to promote the film.

Why don't you or Spike Lee go ahead and make such movie from the African's imagination? who is stopping you?

who's stopping me? how about a multi million dollar budget. how about the hollywood elite. how about the euro-american ethos that only myths/fables/imagination of white folks has value. rome. greece. england. france. spain. germany. why do americans have to believe that that etos is ours?

Looks alright from what bit they show, tho it seems to focus more on the life prior to his becoming a bow wielding outlaw.

And I certainly hope Ridley Scott doesn't totally destroy it like what was done with the King Arthur sham that Fox put out and was not based on the legends or myths or even history. But since Ridley Scott is best known for his most famous film, BLADE RUNNER, I have faith that he will get it right.

As far as other versions, I really like that TNT tv series The New Adventures of Robin Hood. That along with the tv series Witchblade was some awesome television back in the day. :o) As far as feature films, I also loved the Flynn version that so many others mentioned. Costner's was alright, but wasn't my fave.

As far as some picking on accents, and Costners lack thereof. I didn't hear any complaints about Mel Gibson not having anything close to a proper Scottish accent when he played Braveheart. ;o)

I'm still waiting on the movies to be made about the warrior women for a change, Queen Boudica and Princess Gwenllian ap Cynan. Or perhaps even Queen Zenobia.

That's a good point about the warrior women. It looks like Scott is going to miss that opportunity with Robin Hood as well. In the old legends, Marian fought next to Robin and bested him on at least one occasion that I can remember offhand. Really, she is the goddess and Robin is her consort.

The Kevin Costner version (of the movie trailer) was good - the rest - blech.

Erm... excuse me, but, the "classic" version with Kevin Costner?!? Are you kidding!?? The Costner film was a wreck. Even Mel Brooks took a shot at it in his very bad comedy knock off, but at least *his* Robin Hood, could "do an English accent." Please, the classic version of Robin Hood starred Errol Flynn in one of his most memorable roles, and is a true classic. The Costner film? Meh, traif!

I think the classic version stars a fox.

So when is Hollywood going to give us a story that we have not seen before?

You wouldn't like it!

Half of the trailer looks just the like the opening Germania scene in Gladiator. Without tigers it won't be memorable.

I think I saw a wolf though, he might be one step ahead of you!

Doesn't look particularly merry. Actually reading the Howard Pyle book right now and am surprised at how closely the Michael Curtiz / Errol Flynn version came in its adaptation, in tone if not necessarily to the letter of the work. On the other hand, there is something especially topical about Robin Hood right now so a new movie version seems appropriate, but then again, Ridley Scott's last good movie was Blade Runner in 1982. Everything he's done since then has been mediocre & forgettable.

Scott is the best director alive today.
