Britain Bans Anti-Redhead Newspaper Ad

What do companies in Britain have against redheads?

The Independent is reporting today that Britain's Advertising Standards Authority has banned an ad by Virgin Media because of complaints that it portrayed those with red hair as potentially less than desirable. The ad, for a TV-show called "Dating in the Dark," read: "How do you spot a ginger in the dark?... Looks or personality, who wins?"

In explaining its decision, the ASA said that it banned the ad because it suggested that "people with ginger hair were unattractive," which was "likely to be seen as prejudicial."

Virgin Media, meanwhile, argued that the ad campaign was meant to "challenge people's perceptions of attractiveness and encourage decisions based on personality as well as looks," according to the Guardian.

This announcement follows on the heels of the British supermarket giant Tesco apologizing for carrying a Christmas card in its stores after customers complained that it (you guessed it) made fun of redheads.

The card, which shows a young red-headed boy sitting on Santa's knee, reads: "SANTA loves all kids. Even GINGER ones."

As one woman told the Telegraph: "It's discrimination, pure and simple. I have shown it to a lot of friends and they are all disgusted by it. I just don't find it funny at all."

A Tesco spokesman said that the company was "sorry if this card caused any upset."

Okay, confession time.

Nothing turns me on more (sexually) than a redheaded, freckled, in shape or skinny guy-no matter how pale. If Britain doesn't want them, airmail them all to America, I'll take them.

This is coming from a six foot Russian-American with blonde hair and blue eyes. Can't get laid in the UK because of you're 'ginger'? There's no shortage of Ameican guys like me that will be more than honored to help out.

Redhaired History
England and Scotland had an astonishing number of important red-haired queens or pretenders: Boudicca (reputed red), Catherine of Aragon (auburn), Mary I (auburn), Elizabeth (red-gold), Mary Queen of Scots (chestnut), and possibly the Lady MacBeth.

In the medieval European period, blondes were thought too palid, brunettes too energetic, but red was "median." Somehow that got switched around; in the 17th century red hair was associated with witchcraft.

As a ginger, I'm appalled yet oddly amused by the card.
And anti-red-headism exists. Period.
Although I think when you are a male, the discrimination is just straight up mean anti-gingerism, yet when you are a female, the discrimination becomes mixed with sexual harassment.
If only I had a dime for every single time a complete stranger felt 100% comfortable asking me if my "carpet matches the drapes" or had "fire crotch" yelled at me. While waiting tables to put myself thru college, I actually had a group of guys that I was waiting on ask me about the color of my pubic hair without batting an eye.
Do brunettes or blondes have to endure that? I think not.
While I love my complexion and hair color, I was slightly relieved when my children were born and neither had my hair color (7 yr old daughter is brown with lots of auburn and 2 1/2 yr old son is blond.)

As a youth I had bright red hair. I don't find anything offensive in the ad.

Most people are a bit jealous of ginger folks because they know we are more attractive, smarter, and better in bed.

Ever since I began watching Graham Norton and Mock the Week I have fallen in love with this obsession with gingers. My da's a ginger (from Ireland) and I love ribbing him about his colouring, and my Nan dishes it pretty good too. I wish I could get that Christmas card, they would flip!!!

Many years ago, while living in Edinburgh, I had a boyfriend who was of the same complexion and hair color as the boy in the picture. I used to call hem "Eric the Red". He was a stage actor. His real name? Ken Black.

Give me a break. I have a ginger friend that I would love giving that card to. I think it's quite funny, and he would laugh more than I would.

Overly sensitive people are annoying.

Much ado about nothing. People have been buying the cards to send to their redheaded friends. Just because one over sensitive mother complains everybody gets their knickers in a twist.

"Anti-redhead"? Uh, I don't think the adds are "anti" redhead. They are jokes.
