"Real Housewives" Hit By Hard Times

Real Housewives

NEW YORK — Peculiar things have been happening this season on "The Real Housewives of Orange County."

Gretchen Rossi had a garage sale, Jeana Keough went shopping with her daughter at H&M and Tamra Barney is now doing her own housework.

What?

This is a dramatic turn from season three when Barney's husband gave her a diamond Rolex for her 40th birthday, Vicky Gunvalson debated over buying a yacht (she decided against it) and Rossi's fiance gave her a Harley.

"All of them have been very much affected by the economic situation," explains the show's executive producer, Douglas Ross.

This means the downsizing we're seeing on camera is not just for show. A number of the cast members were involved in real estate that's been on a downslide the past two years. And this season, we'll see Lynne Curtin's family get evicted from their Laguna Beach home.

"We try to treat it as gently but as honestly as we can," Ross says. "We happened to have been there with our cameras ... as part of our normal schedule when they were served the eviction notice. It's one of those great reality TV moments that happened to be caught because we were in the right place at the right time."

Money is a sensitive subject and some people – even reality TV stars – may not want to expose their financial struggles to millions of people. But the housewives don't seem to mind sharing – they even fancy themselves as an inspiration to others in similar situations.

"It helps people across the nation because they realize it's not just them," says Keough.

Barney says the exposure is just her being honest.

"I'm pretty open. ... There's not too much I'll hide. It was difficult for my husband ... but the world's in this place right now and I think people are going to relate to it," she says.

So far it looks like Barney is right. Ratings for the fifth season have been strong and average about 2 million viewers an episode.

This could partly be due to the popularity of the "Real Housewives" franchise in general, which has taken off thanks to over-the-top versions of wig-pulling, table flipping and incredulous statements from women in Atlanta, New Jersey and New York, like, "I'm up here, you're down here." Their actions make viewers ask, "Are they for real?"

Perhaps this season we're finally getting the answer: Yes, they are.

While "The Real Housewives" are compensated for appearing on the show, Keough says it's not enough to support a family. "It's so minimal. It's not enough to make your house payments. It's more like a location fee to keep your house clean."

Keough only filmed three episodes of season 5 and then opted out of the rest – she said she wanted to focus on her real estate career and her family.

Not all the Orange County ladies are having a hard time paying their bills, though. Self-professed workaholic Gunvalson says her insurance business is doing better than ever. And she proudly reveals she's 42 and on target to retire comfortably at age 55.

"When I first started (on the show), I was working out of the house with two employees and now I have a huge office with 10 employees, 700 agents out in the field," she says.

Then there's new cast member Alexis Bellino, 32, who has three children and two nannies. On a recent episode, her husband gave her a 7 carat diamond necklace, just because.

This season, there have been some inconsistencies to the ladies' money woes. Curtin allowed herself to be filmed getting a face lift while her daughter got a nose job. Her husband, Frank, acknowledged the cost of the procedures on camera but said his family's happiness was more important.

Despite the eviction, Lynne Curtin says her finances are improving and predicts her family will be able to build a house next year.

"My husband is a builder in Southern California. It's not like he doesn't try. He's not sitting at home watching TV. He is going out and making an effort. ... I've been married for 20 years. ... We've had the high life we've had the low life. It's just reality."

What is amazing about these California families (say vis a vis the New York show) is how little importance is placed on higher education. These offspring that lounge at home, extravagantly charge on their parents' dime, and think that being gifted their own luxury car is a right are going nowhere fast.

Don't they get paid to do the show?? I am glad Vickie is doing so well, she seems to have raised as awesome down to earth daughter in spite of her wealth..

It's hard to believe that she's getting evicted. Does anyone think so too?

Sadly, the most obnoxious of them, Vicki, is doing great... but hey she is in the always growing Insurance Industry, the Industry that has half of America down and out. She is losing it in all directions, next thing you know she will be in an ambulance being hauled off to a psyche ward.
Wellll, I bet I could live on what they pay them, but I'm frugal. If they pay them so little, what is the incentive to being on the show? Do people really just want to be on TV no matter what they expose of themselves? Yuck.
Slade has appeared on that "Housewives.." show longer than most of the housewives, by now he should have his own show. He does look better with hair and a beard, will it get him a job?
Apparently the Gosselins had a much better deal, they were able to live on it and buy a better life...for a while.

Their families are in shambles..... but being on TV in a tight top is more important. And the other wife Blade, or whatever....he sure is a hanger oner.

C'mon, does anyone think Lynn + daughter PAID for their plastic surgery? It was on Bravo's dime.

Don't watch Housewives ---> no dimes for Bravo.

the only thing thast rips is the bravo website, asking if you want to enter a contest to like like a bravo star. the last thing i want to do is live like a "barvo-leberity", eviction, affiars with married men and table flipping are not options.

i was confused that lynn's family was evicted from their home, but she could "afford" a facelift and nosejob for her daughter. think maybe, that's part of the reason you were evicted? doesn't look like she learned her lesson.

she's old enough to know better. she sure isn't teaching her kids any work ethic or values by behaving in such a manner.

One thing that is up on this series is cup size; that Alexis is racktastic. Her husband better come up with 7 carat necklace or somebody else will.

And maybe the show's compensation is not enough for Jenna Keough's monthly payment, but I'll bet it's fine for me.

her husband gave her the 7 carat neck ornament. and new boobies to go with it.

Getting evicted? I'm sure that is for show. In a country like America, the rich never have to suffer. Their is no downward career path for the super rich, nor are there consequences for irrational exuberance and bad decisions. Only the middle and lower classes are expected to pay for their struggles to make it rich or live like the elite, if just for a short time, whether it was in the stock market, buying property, etc. They need to know their place! The rich, on the other hand, each have hundreds of powerful and connected friends and contacts who will float them home and car loans until things get good again, and they'll be back to their shameless ways in no time. Why the underclasses watch these people is baffling to me. We will never be them.

Actually--many of these people are living Way beyond their means.
Credit card debt and two or three mortgages on their homes, living from
check to check and no savings is a lot of their realities. They look rich--but three months with no
income would make them lose everything--just like everybody else.

One episode she and her daughter dropped $5k on clothes at one store in South Coast Plaza. They also bought the same daughter an expensive car and birthday like you see on the "Super Sweet Sixteen." I don't think she works and they live in a very upscale area which obviously they really couldn't afford. I think them getting evicted is very real.

I think the one most want to see it happen to is actually....all of them.

I just do not understand why anyone would get evicted and then go and get a face lift and the daughter a nose job, come on really, what are you teaching your children that looking good is more important than a place to live. Come on Lynn the word is called PRIORITIES, GET IT TOGEATHER.

Shopping at H&M is not a "downgrade". They have very stylish affordable clothes. I made the big mistake once to pay a lot for a shirt with a RL on it, and the quality was poor, seams came apart and the fabric felt horrible after a few washes.

For TV H&M is a downgrade, in reality a downgrade is shopping at Big Lots, 99c store, Dollar Tree,
Goodwill, or shopping for donated goods at charity food/clothing pantry etc.

Not to me. I've always lived that way. Tell you what, I have no problem with any of my finances. I've always lived below my means and slept very well at night. As I sit and watch what is going on in many peoples lives,I remember the issues that were drilled into my head as a child. Such as:
Don't let the desires of other people interfer with your reality. My reality is just that, I have to live for me. Keep mine real, if I can't afford it, it won't get done, at least not yet. No credit cards, no new cars, no hugh mortgage and no excesses just because someone else can afford them and I'm trying to keep up. Some may call me strange or simple, but I call me safe. Safe from the worries that are sending others to therapy. Hey I'm living without fear and isn't that what it's supposed to be?
