WATCH: Wielding Gavel, Franken Shuts Lieberman Up

Franken

First Posted: 3/18/10 Updated: 5/25/11

Joe Lieberman must be wondering if his colleagues' respect for him went out the same window that he tossed the public option and the Medicare buy-in compromise that was to replace it.

He got an answer of sorts Thursday afternoon as he came to the end of a floor speech, and ran out of time.

"I'm sorry. The senator has spoken for ten minutes," Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.), as the chamber's presiding officer, told Lieberman. Customarily, when senators ask unanimous consent for a bit more time, consent is always given.

"I wonder if I could ask unanimous consent for just an additional moment," Lieberman said.

"In my capacity as the senator from Minnesota, I object," said Franken, in what appeared to be a dramatic departure from the long and stifling tradition of Senate collegiality.

"Really?" responded a stunned Lieberman. "Okay. Don't take it personally. I will ask unanimous consent that the remainder of my remarks be included in the record as if read."

Franken was okay with that. "Without objection," he said.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) rose to his friend Lieberman's defense.

"I must say that I don't know what's happening here in this body, but I think it's wrong. And so I -- it's fine with me that it be 10 minutes, but I'll tell you, I have never seen a member denied an extra minute or so, as the chair just did," said McCain, whose presidential campaign Lieberman backed in 2008.

Franken spokeswoman Jess McIntosh told HuffPost that nothing personal was meant and that Democratic leadership is asking every presiding officer to enforce the 10-minute rule for both sides.

WATCH:

UPDATE: Lieberman and Franken don't seem to be feuding. HuffPost's Jeff Muskus spotted the two senators laughing together on the floor less than an hour after the exchange, as they huddled looking at the phone of Franken's fellow Minnesota Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar -- presumably sharing a laugh about media reports of the exchange.

yet McCain can't seem to stop talking about what damage Franken has done to Senate decorum, however. At a press conference Friday, McCain interjected the following after a question about defense appropriations:

"Can I mention one other aspect of this debate that's really unfortunate? I've been around here for more than 20 years. Yesterday, on the floor of the Senate, the senator from Connecticut was finishing up his remarks, and as we always do -- ever since I've been here -- as we always do, he said I'd like an extra minute to finish up my remarks, and was objected to by the newest member of the United States Senate. And in a most brusque way. That's how the comity of this body has deteriorated. We've got to stop, we've got to stop this kind of behavior. I've never seen anything like that, and I hope that I don't see it again," said McCain, even though he's done the same thing himself.

Any further delay would suit the GOP just fine, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said at Friday's press conference. "We don't think this bill ought to pass," McConnell said. "We're not in a hurry to finish."

GO AWAY JOE, YOU LIE AND TALK THROUGH YOUR NOSE AS WELL AS OTHER THINGS.

Since McCain wants to bring up damage done, let's remember that he seems to consider a mob yelling "k ill him" to be quite acceptable.

Al F wasn't entertaining on SNL and he's not too entertaining here either. He should have stayed in the entertainment business. Whatever you think of Lieberman, he should be allow some kind of courtesy, but then again we only offer that to those willing to take charge of others fate for their benefit and power not for the good of the people. We certainly don't need any opposing view to be heard. Just let the sheeple hear what you want them to hear, shut out the rest and count on their inability to think for themselves to get you to your end means. Yes, Franken is what we need to head towards failure and dependence. Good job!

Wasn't it recent that the broke down maverick denied a democrat a few extra minutes.
What hypocrites the republicans are! McCain is a disgrace to the political system and should retire!

Hey Jayes,

I agree that this site is privately owned and not subject to any form of official scrutiny and as such it gives the impression that the owner/s could be bias and in favor of a certain party or ideology.

The fact that you were able to pen your comments shows that this site believes in fair play and allows people like you to speak your mind without censorship. Enjoy it while you can!.

I don't believe Fox will allow left-leaning or centrist people like us have an opportunity to air our views.

Well.....maybe they will allow us to speak, but after thatn they will distort our views by taking them out of context.

Hey axel heist,

"The fact that you were able to pen your comments shows that this site believes in fair play and allows people like you to speak your mind without censorship."

Well, I was censored. That was the point. It happens.*

This time, using pithy and perhaps thought-demanding language, I simply asserted that I couldn't tell if Lieberman and Franken were not on the inside of a joke the vast majority of us wouldn't get (given Franken's dry humor and Lieberman's honed disingenuity, in the context of them being east-coasters and U.S. senators, with sympathy as a dimension, as there have been not a few high-profile Jewish men acting conspicuously pernicious on a macro scale of late, the latter only relevant because Franken lacks the pernicious part). With Franken as hero, there's less pent-up tension for justice against Lieberman. Someone finally said it - a benign public shaming.

Then I said, if Franken was serious, maybe he'll teach the Democrats courage, or at least a little political theater.

Or, I could just talk kiddie and say: I like Franken. I don't like Lieberman.

I'm sure that would past the deep thought test.

*The other possibility is a technical error. Given other experiences, doesn't seem like it.

Low class move by a tax evading, mean spirited low class Senator... didn't even have the courage to stand behind his insult... had to blame his boss Harry Reid.
08:43 AM on 12/23/2009
Yes, but that is where we are headed and seems to be what people want. Why can't they look past their Democrat and Republican labels and look at both sides and choose what's best? Oh, of course, that would not be profitable to those with an agenda and sheeple have been taught to let others choose what is best for them. Rev. Wright was right. God has d-----America. Look what he gave us, look where we are going.

this story is wearing, but it's the source of the (sort of) crime*, so i guess i'll start by asking here -

does anyone know who moderates? is it the writers of the articles? are there a team of dedicated gatekeepers: 'this is offensive. this is ok. this violates blah blah. this one is kosher,' etc?

i'm wondering how a post would be flagged-off or not posted when there's nothing wrong with it.

I apologize. In Minnesota we are now putting up signs on our border that say "Warning: this state may contain Al Franken."

Our taxable revenue has gone down every month since he was elected (sort of via recount lol). Maybe those signs are working.
02:00 PM on 12/20/2009
Yeah, because I'm sure somehow "taxable revenue" has SO much to do with Al Franken.

More likely, it's because people like you live there.
02:03 PM on 12/20/2009
Hmmm.....if I remember correctly, there was a president recently elected via recount.....oh, wait, no, the Supreme Court "installed" that one.

John McCain is widdle cwy baby pants...
thank GOD he is not our President.

Give em hell Franken!

Senator Al, from the comments that Huffington Post had received, it is clear that you won the PR battle against John and Joe for just one simple act: Joe, your time is up, no more extra seconds for your rambling discourse.

Too much of a good thing is, however, not good for your political health, Al. This freaky town called DC is erratic. Move on to more important legislative agendas, so that you are not viewed as the just flavour of the week.
04:48 PM on 12/20/2009
While I agree in principle that Senator Franken needs to keep focusing on the grand picture, I admire his "stand" against the blowhards who would sell their soul for power. I wish there were more Dems who would take every opportunity to show the Nation that they have had enough of this backstabbing, power at all cost, seditionists which now is the single objective of the Rep. Party.
04:50 PM on 12/20/2009
It is interesting to note that so far the only representatives who have shown some "spine" are the junior members.

Great job. Whatever shuts Lieberman up works for me. I loved the shocked expression on his face - just great.
