An emotional Richard Heene broke out in tears Wednesday morning as he apologized for perpetrating a hoax that caught the nation's attention, and could cost taxpayers upwards of 50,000 dollars. Heene, who led the entire nation to believe his son was stuck in a wayward weather balloon, was barely able to choke out an apology. He went out of his way to specifically address the rescue workers, saying "I want to apologize to all the rescue workers out there and the people who got involved in the community."
Heene was sentenced to 90 days in jail plus probation. The judge also restricted Heene from earning money off of the stunt. Heene's intent in orchestrating the hoax was reportedly to win a reality TV contract.
