Willie Nelson And Barbi Twins Campaign To Save Wild Horses (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 03/18/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:00 PM ET

Willie Nelson and Playboy models Shane and Sia Barbi are teaming up in a campaign to save wild horses. In a letter written about the cause, Nelson stresses that this is a "bipartisan issue" and that he believes "these horses should be allowed to run naturally on their land" and implores the Bureau of Land Management not to "manage these creatures into extinction."

Nelson states in the letter that he's personally rescued 25-30 horses directly from slaughter.

You can read the full letter here.

The Barbi twins have been champions of the wild horse cause -- in July, they targeted Rep. Doc Hastings, (R-Wash.) for his opposition to the "Restore Our American Mustangs Act," which would provide around $200 million per year to preserve land for the horses to live on.

Check out a few photos of the Barbi twins supporting animal rights causes, and a few images from their modeling careers.

What is the problem in America with allowing animals to roam around? We kill or control every single thing in sight. Wolves, buffalo, horses, pumas, bears, deer, you name it. Instead of being proud of the diversity of animals we have in America, we choose to kill them all in the name of money-generating housing developments.

Heartbreaking. This agency does not work for the welfare of these animals. Imagine the stressful horror of a helicopter roundup. Then joining thousands of other terrified horses in a holding pen. Any horse over 10 years of age will be available for purchase by "killer buyers"--and our glorious American mustangs will be shipped for slaughter to Canada or Mexico. These wild horses only exist here, in the U.S. Once they are gone, it will be forever.

If Huffingtpost had posted a photo of the beautiful wild horses the BLM is decimating, this thread could have served a better purpose to save the horses. As is, it is just another sophomoric thread, per HPs usual in the Green section.

Massive illegal round up of wild horses will begin today in Nevada. 2500 horses rounded up and only leaving 124 left in the wild. Not viable for healthy reproduction.

Round up to occur on private lands to keep the public from viewing the atrocities of the round up.

These healthy horses, who pose no harm to the environment, will be placed in govt holding pens to languish along with the other 30,000 wild horses.

The BLM is breaking the law to protect these horses. They are decimating them. They are a deplorable government agency who answer to no one and do what they want.

Here's a copy of part of Willie Nelson's plea:

URGENT
PLEASE HELP SAVE THE WILD HORSES

Dear Friends:

My family and I are joining the Barbi Twins and the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) in their efforts to save the last of America's wild horses. This is an important bipartisan cause and I am asking all Americans to join with us before it's too late. (...)

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the agency in charge of protecting wild horses, has been rounding them up at an alarming rate, supposedly for their own good. Sadly, there are more wild horses in holding pens than in the wild. Something is wrong with that, so we must act now before the BLM has managed these magnificent animals into extinction. I believe that we should leave the horses to run naturally on their land. Wild horses evolved in North America before spreading throughout the world so it is important that we protect them from the BLM. The polls show that over 70% of American's agree. The people have spoken.

Folks, please join my family and friends at the Animal Welfare Institute by visiting http://www.awionline.org/wildhorses, before December 28 2009 to see how you can help with this important American cause.

Willie Nelson.

I'm horrified, just horrified. Look at them in those swimsuits. Wait, I better look again.......Yup, i'm horrified. I'm going to print that picture up and paste it on the wall just so I can remember....the horror.

Mostly the horror of being too far around the bend to attract something that good looking!

Well, I'm a horse - a real stud wannabe - who's never been let out of the barn door. I sure do need some saving! :-D

Okay, to not be immature, they are working for a good cause... the animals, not me. I'm just a man. Of course, men are dogs...

You're just a man? I'm looking at your picture and, well, did you have an operation or something? I mean, you look like, well, I hate to tell you this but it looks like the picture of a woman who is not altogether unattractive. But if you say you are a man I guess I believe you.

Years ago we adopted a mustang through the Bureau of Land Management program. We named her Wild Thing. She was one of the sweetest, gentlest horses we ever owned. I can't to strongly recommend that others who have the facilities and knowledge to do the same. It isn't for the first time horse owner, but if you have the basic knowledge it is a very satisfying experience.

Behold the horse; God's noblest creature.

No Man is so important that he need travel further in one day than a horse can carry him.
Bless Willie and the Barbi Twins for their good cause.

Can I get an "Amen" ?
