Tea Party

The Plum Line:

It's now becoming clear that this could be a major issue for Republicans in 2010: the Tea Party movement, as well as high-profile conservatives, are going to demand that candidates call for a full repeal of the Dem healthcare reform bill, presuming it passes.

Multiple figures on the right are beginning to make this demand explicit.

How about let me opt out of my FORCED SS/Medicare payments so I can invest my money as I CHOOSE and the rest of you can hug and cuddle and love your bankrupt, beaurocratic Medicare and Social Security.

Sounds good to me. I hear Enron is a real sweet deal right now.

LOL. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a big supporter of the current health care bill, only because I think it tries to appease the right too much, but I think the GOP should call their bluff, see how strong this so called teaparty movement actually is, and ask all those elderly tea partiers if they want to go back to the GOP donut hole that this bill will fix…

The teapublicans got it right, this bill is a giveaway to private insurance. As long as you have private insurance sucking the life blood out of any system you put in place you'll never see any cost savings.

Support single payer at the state level.

BTW, if teapublicans repeal this law what do they have to put in it's place?

Portability across state lines - increases your choice of insurance from 2 or 3 to about 1300. We do it with car insurance (libs favorite analogy)....high risk pools (people who smoke, overeat should have to pay higher premiums)...tort reform - may not save as many billions as we'd like but it will increase our specialty doctors allowing for more choice, and lower costs that we're paying now for exorbitant malpractice insurance. I've noticed no libs understand how public programs like Medicaid and Medicare are sucking the life out of the system - the reimbursement rates are so low that the rest of us who pay privately are picking up the costs - I work with private and public insurance and it's no wonder why providers are dropping Medicare patients more and more. "Free" is not free so please stop running to those of us paying a majority of the costs with your hands out.

It's refreshing to read a comment at Huffpost by someone who actually knows what they are talking about. Prior to 1964 America basically had a free market healthcare system and it worked just fine. In fact, it was excellent. Private charity was provided for those who couldn't afford to pay. Every improvement in healthcare since then has been in spite of big government...not because of big government.

If these Republican reforms are so great, why then did they get this stuff into bill, defeat the public option/single payer, and then vote NO?
No other reason than to have health care reform be Obama's "Waterloo".
They claim that this "reform" will make dependents of the people, who will then vote for Democrats.
Sounds more like they are afraid of the "Charge of the Light Brigade".
Even if this "reform" does work, which I don't think it will because of no public option, it will be popular, and the Tea Baggers are making them promise to repeal it - which would be political suicide among the mainstream electorate.
So, repeal turns out to be the 'minor flaw' of their 'otherwise brilliant plan'.
Keep going, y'all, promise the Tea Baggers the moon, and when you fail, watch them turn and primary you out, to the loss of both to Democrats. Just keep going!
You Republicans just keep deluding yourselves that there were 'tens of thousands' at the tea party rallies. Delude yourselves right into the annals of history along with the Whigs - sounds good to me!

The key to defeating the teabaggers is to drive a wedge between the uneducated, mostly poor and religious that are the "grass roots" and the white collar selfish upper middle class "astro turf" conservative. For too long this privileged group has lived high on tax breaks for their businesses and not paying their fair share in taxes.

So it's better for small business to pay increased health insurance premiums, under the current system, and get ripped off so the CEO of the health insurance companies can buy a second, third, or fourth yacht?

I've seen personally how the health insurance companies ram their 'increases in premiums' down the throats of small business.

The increases were passed on to the employees' contributions and co-pays.

I have and I can tell you that the uneven playing field is then biggest problem. I couldn''t provide employees the same coverage as the big companies' plans - my pool is too small. The health care bill, crappy as it may be, does help with that in a major way.

Oh, they pay their fare share in taxes trust me, they just don't want to have to pay higher premiums for their employees or higher taxes. I can see their point, but regardless of what they think we do need healthcare reform that benefits all americans, even the ones who own small businesses. I have a job and pay taxes too, but if I do it I want good healthcare for it and I don't think my boss should have to pay my insurance if I get it provided by the government.

What is wrong with you teabaggers? I agree it is not a perfect bill. However, although I would have liked a public option, having the insurance companies not denying health care for preconditions, allowing parents to keep their children on their health insurance for a longer period of time and having exhanges so that we can choose insurance from several competing companies is a step in the right direction.

If you truly believe that the govt should not be in the business of health care or social services, please get in line to give up your SOcial Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare and any VA benefits that you currently enjoy.

I'm willing to give it up as long as I get back all the tax dollars that I paid in support of these programs. Plus, I'd like back the value of my money I have lost due to inflation that is caused by excess government spending and the printing of money to pay for government spending.

When is someone going too start protesting for a longer weekend? Or, a shorter work week. Or maybe both. This will give everyone much needed time too figure out what to protest next. I think we should put aside areas that protests can be held. Much like green areas. This would be great for the media. They would never have to take down the stage. Wait!, they already have DC!.

Hope springs eternal.

Over 2/3rds of the country wants some form of health care and insurance reform and these wonderful folks want to split the GOP in two and force the most reactionary conservative candidate available in each district while destroying the old guard Rockefeller Republicans in their midst.

One can only hope.

85% of Americans have health care insurance and good health care. 90% are happy with their insurance. Many people now are unhappy with the health care industry ONLY because of a massive propaganda campaign to portray the industry as completely out of control. Its like congressional approval polls. 80% disapprove of congress but 70% like their own congressman.

I like my health insurance too, but I like my mother's medicare better. She has options and I do not. My employer and myself have to pay for my healthcare. I am also an insurance agent who underwrites healthcare and cannot get any potential clients to get approved. You wouldn't believe the crapola they deny. So you can go ahead and call it propoganda if you want, but you better never hope you get sick and try to switch insurance carriers.

The Tea Party has scheduled the quitter gov as their keynote speaker at the first annual Tea Party Convention to be held in February.

The quitter gov played a big h/o/a/x on the American public. Don't believe it? Check at the links below and scroll to view the photos. The quitter gov was not pregnant during her partial term in office. Judge for yourself.

I keep hearing that those on the left might sit out the 2010 elections because they are disappointed at how things have turned out this year. That would be a grave mistake. The Tea Baggers are dangerous. They are easily led and easily manipulated. They will rally around anyone who feeds on their prejudices and fears. And they will follow their leaders without question or criticism. Look how revelations about Sarah Palin's perfidity and lack of legitimate qualifications to hold higher office have failed to diminish her standing with her adoring Tea Bagger fans. Pox News and other right wing media outlets will give the Tea Baggers plenty of coverage over the next few months, extending their influence. While liberals may be disappointed that more of their ideas haven't been incorporated into legislation that has been produced this year, they will have no input if the extreme right wing of the Republican Party gains power. So if you boycott the 2010 elections because you are disappointed with the Democrats or vote for a third party candidate with no chance of winning, you do so at your peril.
