Sarah Palin, Hillary Clinton, And How Women Can Win: "Notes From The Cracked Ceiling"

Hillary Clinton

"Notes From the Cracked Ceiling: Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin, and What It Will Take for a Woman to Win" (Crown, 288 pages, $25), by Anne E. Kornblut: If you thought the 2008 election was a triumph in the cause of getting a woman closer to the White House, political reporter Anne E. Kornblut begs to differ.

In her retrospective "Notes From the Cracked Ceiling: Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin, and What It Will Take for a Woman to Win," Kornblut argues that Clinton and Palin's candidacies revived old stereotypes, divided the women's movement and set back the cause of equality in politics.

Kornblut, who covers the White House for The Washington Post, is careful not to say that Clinton and Palin lost because they were women, but she makes a compelling case that gender played an outsize role in their campaigns – to their detriment.

Strategists refer to the "hair, hemlines, and husbands" phenomenon in explaining the disproportionate attention that appearances and spouses garner when a candidate happens to be a woman. Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm's campaign, for example, figured out that they could lessen the disadvantage of her beauty by using black-and-white photographs. Other female candidates have sought to bolster their "toughness" credentials – something they generally have to prove, unlike male candidates – by working as prosecutors or signing onto armed services bills.

One of the most striking sections of the book lists numerous examples of double standards in the treatment of male and female politicians. Kornblut recalls the persistent questions about the maternity of Sarah Palin's youngest child, a controversy that was unfounded, while rumors of John Edwards' love child were for the most part left alone, even though they turned out to be true.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner was confirmed despite his tax problems, while the smaller tax problems of would-be performance czar Nancy Killefer doomed her nomination.

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor was widely criticized for her assertion that she would draw on her experience as a Latina, although it was barely noted when Justice Samuel Alito in his confirmation hearings a few years earlier had promised to draw on his Italian background.

When Palin quit as Alaska governor, commentators offered explanations that included attention deficit disorder and narcissistic personality disorder. Neither Bob Dole, Trent Lott nor Newt Gingrich was diagnosed with mental illnesses when they stepped down from their political positions, Kornblut notes.

Kornblut's explanation of the challenges facing female candidates brings to mind a famous analogy in feminist philosophy: If you look at an individual wire of a birdcage, you won't be able to understand why the bird doesn't just fly around it, but taken all together, you can see that the wires are confining.

A humorous retort to all this comes from Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. Kornblut asked her about the doubts women have about whether they're qualified to lead. After rolling her eyes, Napolitano said: "As opposed to, you know, what? Look at these yahoo guys that have been in public office for two hundred years. You think we cannot do as well as they do? I mean, give me a break."

While Kornblut is convincing and nuanced in demonstrating how the cards are stacked against women in politics, her pessimistic thesis in the opening of the book appears to lose steam in a later chapter when she lists promising women who have figured out how to avoid some of the common pitfalls facing female candidates.

Kornblut has a tendency to be a tad repetitive and she offers little new information about the 2008 campaign, but this book's value lies in its detailed examination of the current state of women in politics.

And how do women do that Hillary, buy telling outright lies and say it was misspeaking?

Perez Hilton being a member of the White House press corps, that the name Palin will provide a rich vein of comedic material for years to come. It's baffling that she's even mention in this book when there are so many women from both sides of the aisle that are more competent.

Sarah Palin is a brand name completely manufactured by her handlers on the Evangelic extreme right.
This handsome woman is almost brainless.

Sarah is not intelligent enough to run for any office. She could never do the SOS job that Hillary does on a regular basis.

"John McCain and I, we love you and thank you for spending a few minutes to talk to me." --Sarah Palin, talking with Canadian radio prankster posing as French Presideny Nicolas Sarkozy, Nov. 1, 2008 (Read more about the prank call, watch the video and see the transcript)

"Ohh, good, thank you, yes." --Sarah Palin, after the Canadian prank caller complimented her on the documentary about her life, Hustler's "Nailin Paylin," Nov. 1, 2008

"We realize that more and more Americans are starting to see the light there and understand the contrast. And we talk a lot about, OK, we're confident that we're going to win on Tuesday, so from there, the first 100 days, how are we going to kick in the plan that will get this economy back on the right track and really shore up the strategies that we need over in Iraq and Iran to win these wars?" --Sarah Palin, suggesting we are at war with Iran, FOX News interview, Nov. 1, 2008

More Sarah:

"They are also building schools for the Afghan children so that there is hope and opportunity in our neighboring country of Afghanistan." --Sarah Palin, speaking at a fundraiser in San Francisco, Oct. 5, 2008

"All of 'em, any of 'em that have been in front of me over all these years." --Sarah Palin, unable to name a single newspaper or magazine she reads, interview with Katie Couric, CBS News, Oct. 1, 2008 (Watch video clip)

"I'll try to find you some and I'll bring them to you." --Sarah Palin, asked by Katie Couric to cite specific examples of how John McCain has pushed for more regulation in his 26 years in the Senate, CBS News interview, Sept. 24, 2008 (Watch video clip)

It is confusing to see the argument that Hillary's candidacy failed because of gender, when her primary qualification was being the accomodating spouse of a more powerful, effective and popular male politician. She is a masteful opportunist who has ridden a troubled marriage to the heights of wealth and power. It is difficult to perceive Hillary as a vicitm.

The dumb Sarah:

"I think on a national level your Department of Law there in the White House would look at some of the things that we've been charged with and automatically throw them out." --Sarah Palin, referring to a department that does not exist while attempting to explain why as president she wouldn't be subjected to the same ethics investigations that compelled her to resign as governor of Alaska, ABC News interview, July 7, 2009

"How sad that Washington and the media will never understand; it's about country. And though it's honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term, of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make." --Sarah Palin, July 4, 2009

Sarah just taught us that lying will get you ahead. Whining will get you even more popularity. Being juvenile is the key to her success. The more stupidity you show, the more America will love you. It's called a free pass.

Didn't Hillary teach us the power of dishonesty and and claims of "victimization. Hillary is certainly not stupid, but she demonstrated that the less integrity you show the more the press looks the other way, if you are a woman.

I think what they should be focusing on is real strength and things like tact, discipline, diplomacy, honor, integrity, etc. It's gotten to the point in this day and age that there is really no difference between a man and woman as far as politics goes. And being strong does not mean you come across as being a "b1tch" which dooms almost every serious female contender. Look at Ferraro, Clinton and, yes, even Palin. All came across as snob, arrogant, a strong ability to b1tch about something without actually being strong at all. Matter of fact, all 3 came across as pretty lame and weak. Strength comes from deep within. It's not something you can pretend to have, such as the person making the case about females being prosecutors or signing armed services bills. Wow, with a stroke of a pen I can become STRONG? Really? If that was the case, I could have skipped the military and become a politician.

Strength comes from facing your worst fears and coming through it. Facing the worst of adversities and coming through it. You can't simply have strength bestowed upon you by a job title or signing statement. Look at Segolene Royal over in France. She had some strength, she held to her convictions and didn't waver. Faced up to all of her detractors and silenced many of them with her eloquence and strength. And she very nearly pulled off a huge political upset.

I think it was the irreverently insightful Maureen Dowd who observed that Hillary never learned the difference in being strong and being mean.

Sarah Palin lied (partial list):

- She has lied about the Bridge To Nowhere. She ran for office favoring it, wore a sweatshirt defending it, and only gave it up when the federal congress, Senator McCain in particular, went ballistic. She kept the money anyway and favors funding Don Young's Way, at twice the cost of the original bridge.

- She has lied about her firing of the town librarian and police chief of Wasilla.

- She has lied about pressure on Alaska's public safety commissioner to fire her ex-brother-in-law.

- She has lied about her previous statements on climate change.

- She has lied about Alaska's contribution to America's oil and gas production.

- She has lied about the actual progress in constructing a natural gas pipeline from Alaska.

- She has lied about Obama's position on habeas corpus.

- She has lied about her alleged tolerance of homosexuality.

- She has lied about the use or non-use of a TelePrompter at the St Paul convention.

- She has lied about her alleged pay-cut as mayor of Wasilla.

- She has lied about what Alaska's state scientists concluded about the health of the polar bear population in Alaska.

- She has lied about what happened on the campaign trail.

- She has lied about people in her book.

-She has lied about death panels.

-She has lied about In God We Trust on coins.

You cannot trust a word she says. On anything.

"Neither Bob Dole, Trent Lott nor Newt Gingrich was diagnosed with mental illnesses when they stepped down from their political positions, Kornblut notes."

Once again, another example of revisionist history. When all 3 of those men resigned, they did not seek higher office afterwards. Matter of fact, 2 of the 3 resigned because they FAILED. And neither Lott nor Gingrich has sought any other office, yet. I'm pretty confident Gingrich is either running in 2012, or positioning himself as a VP choice. Sarah Palin made it obvious that she was cashing in on her fame with an obvious hint at a 2012 Presidential run. She didn't quit out of failure, she quit out of greed in that there was more money to be made in the 49 other states than there can ever be made as Alaska Governor.

"Kornblut recalls the persistent questions about the maternity of Sarah Palin's youngest child, a controversy that was unfounded, while rumors of John Edwards' love child were for the most part left alone, even though they turned out to be true."

Kornblut is a revisionist historian. The Edwards story was literally front page news everywhere for a solid 7 months before it was finally proven to be true because journalists didn't give up on the story. As far as Palin, NO questions were asked. No journalist would touch it. For example, if you research hard enough, you can find the ADN stories about Palin's baby being completely normal and healthy during her pregnancy and day of her birth. The first time down syndrome was mentioned? Well after the baby was born. But the journalists failed in not reporting that, and instead allowed Sarah to get away with the outright l1e that she was forced to make the decision early in her pregnancy.

Oh, I'm gonna tear up this article, more posts to come!

Any book that considers Palin as a woman to be emulated or some kind of feminist to be seriously studied on the political stage is not worth reading IMO. I think I'll pass on this. NEXT.

Stay in shape and plastic surgery (if necessary)

Women want to win, apparently the package is more important than the contents.

You can't compare John Edwards to Palin in terms of attention paid to children. Edwards didn't win a single primary was never EVER seriously in the race, whereas Palin was APPOINTED by McCain to possibly be Vice President or President upon his demise. It's like complaining that a female movie star's life gets way more scrutiny than that of a male extra. It has nothing to do with gender, it's a matter of exposure and meteoric fame.

Sarah Palin presents herself as an intellectual lightweight; and she is proud of it. Marginal education did not serve this country well during the last administration. It's that reason, along with a lowbrow family image that would justify Perez Hilton being a member of the White House press corps, that the name Palin will provide a rich vein of comedic material for years to come. It's baffling that she's even mention in this book when there are so many women from both sides of the aisle that are more competent.
