New Year's Celebrations Around The World (PHOTOS)

(AP) PARIS - Fireworks exploded over Sydney's famous bridge and the Eiffel Tower prepared for its own colored-light spectacle as the world celebrated a New Year that many hope will be more prosperous and peaceful than 2009.

Revelers across the globe at least temporarily shelved worries about their future prospects to bid farewell to the first decade of the 21st century.

The financial downturn hit hard in 2009, sending many industrial economies into recession, tossing millions out of work and out of their homes, as foreclosures rose dramatically in some countries.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said 2009 had been an extraordinary year for the world -- citing the inauguration of the United States' first black president and international attempts to grapple with climate change and the global financial crisis.

"The great message from 2009 is that because we've been all in this together, we've all worked together," Rudd said in a New Year's message.

Australia got the festivities rolling Thursday, with Sydney draping its skies with explosive bursts of crimson, purple and blue to the delight of more than 1 million New Year revelers.

I wish a Happy New Year to all HuffPosters whether we agree or not. May 2010 be a much better year for everyone in the country and not just the few. (Guess you can tell where I stand.)

The Pakistani kids with their "piece" written in the sand were so cute. Hopefully SOME peace will come, to them and to us.

Maybe they are so used to the ball being dropped here they decided to go ahead on their own this year.

Greetings all! It's already 1:41am on Jan. 1, 2010. It's -35C/-31F, but the full "blue moon" is visible and reflecting off the snow we got yesterday--everything is so well lit that there are shadows everywhere, just like the daytime. There are fireworks--this is the most important holiday in Russia. However, unlike last year when I went down these sort of ice luge courses on the river bank slope--quite cool. It's part of an ice city they build each year, although the design changes each year. Hey, if you're in Siberia, ya might as well build an ice city with luge-like slides.

Anyway, peace and blessings to all in 2010...

All the pics are so beautiful and full of life--esp. the Pakistan picture on the beach carving out a plea for peace.
I hope they get their peace and those drone attacks cease.

Happy New Year to ALL my HuffPo friends.
I hope next year is better for us than the last!

I am not sure if they were asking for peace or maybe the guy was hoping to get a piece. LOL
