Skull And Bones

NEW YORK — A human skull that apparently was turned into a ballot box for Yale's mysterious Skull and Bones society is going on the auction block.

Christie's estimates the skull will sell for $10,000 to $20,000 when it is auctioned on Jan. 22. Fittingly, the auction house has agreed to keep the seller's name a secret. On Monday, it described the person only as a European art collector.

The skull is fitted with a hinged flap and is believed to have been used during voting at the famous society's meetings. The auction house said it also may have been displayed at the society's tomblike headquarters on Yale's campus in New Haven, Conn., during the late 1800s.

Skull and Bones, an elite society founded in 1832, has closely guarded its members' names and its activities since the early 1970s. Prior to that time, the group published an annual roster.

Publicly known members, known as Bonesmen, include President William Howard Taft, both presidents Bush, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, businessman and diplomat Averell Harriman, publisher Henry Luce and author and commentator William F. Buckley Jr.

"I think it's a macabre artifact," Margot Rosenberg, head of Christie's American decorative arts department, said Tuesday. "It's an intriguing story tied to America, tied to Yale. I think it will generate interest for people who are former Bonesmen, people who collect Americana, people who are interested in history."

The skull is believed to have been owned by Edward T. Owen, who graduated Yale in 1872 and went to become professor of French and linguistics at the University of Wisconsin. The word THOR is etched into the skull; it may have been the nickname given to Owen or another society member.

The skull is being sold with a black book, inscribed with Owen's name, the year 1872 and the numeral 322, a reference to the society's year of inception and to the death of the orator Demosthenes in 322 B.C. It contains the names and photographs of about 50 Bonesmen, including Taft, who became the 27th president of the United States; Morrison Remick Waite, who became U.S. chief justice in 1874; and William Maxwell Evarts, who served as U.S. secretary of state and U.S. attorney general.

Skull and Bones invites 15 Yale seniors to join each year. Bonesmen swear an oath of secrecy about the group and its strange rituals, which include initiation rites such as confessing sexual secrets and kissing a skull.

On Tuesday, the society's secrecy remained intact. Efforts to reach a society member or a representative of its business arm, the Russell Trust Association, through a Yale spokesman were unsuccessful. The Ivy League school, which is not affiliated with the society, did not return a reporter's call.

This probably wasn't Geronimo's skull, but nevertheless,
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-05-09-geronimo_x.htm?ord=1
"A Yale University historian discovered a 1918 letter that raises anew questions about a secretive Yale student society and the remains of the American Indian leader Geronimo. The letter, written by a member of Skull and Bones to another member of the society, purports that some of the Indian leader's remains were spirited from his burial plot in Fort Sill, Okla., to a stone tomb in New Haven that serves as the club's headquarters. .
Members of Skull and Bones — including the president's grandfather, Prescott Bush — dug up his grave when a group of Army volunteers from Yale were stationed at the fort during World War I.

A purported diary of the event, sent to a leader of the San Carlos Apache tribal nation in the 1980s by an anonymous Bonesman, records that the Bonesmen took from the grave some bones and several pieces of tack for a horse.

The 1918 letter posted on Yale's alumni website was discovered last fall by researcher Marc Wortman. The letter, sent to F. Trubee Davison by Winter Mead, said Geronimo's skull and other remains were taken from the leader's burial site.

"The skull of the worthy Geronimo the Terrible, exhumed from its tomb at Fort Sill by your club and Knight Haffuer is now safe inside the T- together with is well worn femurs, bit and saddle horn," Mead wrote"

I don't know where to start on how wrong this is. Never mind the moral and ethical issues. It is considered by most anthropologists that respect for the dead is the very first step humans took towards becoming civilized. This offends the most basic nature of human religion and morality. The humiliating decades of offense that this poor persons remains have suffered for the sophomoric and macabre amusement of spoiled little rich boys is beyond indulgent, lax or permissive. And now they will heap further desecration and violation on this poor soul (literally not figuratively) by actually auctioning his/her remains used by spoiled rich boys for their entertainment and now sold for profit for some other rich persons admiration of a group of people who have caused some of the greatest cruelty and wickedness this world has seen. Compared to Alumni's resume of atrocities I suppose a couple of bones are the least of their transgressions and crimes. But crime it is and putting aside all moral outrage and political objection this is simply illegal and criminal. I suggest all people outraged and offended by this make a formal complaint with both the Federal Trade Commission and the New York Attorney General's Office of Andrew Cuomo. Feel free to use any of my wording.

If you only knew some of the things that occur - with and within secret societies. You can start with some of the things the Mayans did to humans.

Many people who are missing/kidnapped are abducted by recruites who work for these these secret societies. People do horrific things - and yes some of them are in government positions.

The Mochea in Peru would pose the skeletons of sacrificial victims around the banquet tables during feasts.

Very disrespectful to have USED a human skull as a ballot box, and to now be auctioning it off. So many of the S&B members were/are allegedly respectful of human life. I know this is from a dead human being but I say this is sacreligious. So sad.

Years ago, a punk band here in Minneapolis stole a corpse and kept it, dressed up, in their rehearsal space as a mascot. The police were not amused - they had to give it back. But Skull & Bones is a group of rich kids, they can do what they want...

According to Wikepedia, Geronimo died in 1909. Much as I dislike the idea of the elitist secret society and the harm its associations might have done to our democracy, it is pretty much impossible that this is Geronimo's skull.
