The Best Pizza In LA

First Posted: 3/18/10   Updated: 5/25/11

While Los Angeles has not historically been known as a big pizza town, the past few years have seen an explosion of new, gourmet pies and a renewed appreciation for old stand-bys. These selections come from all over the city, from Santa Monica to the San Gabriel Valley, to ensure that you never have to order Domino's again.

Abbot's Pizza

Purveyor of the controversial "famous bagel dough" crust, this Venice hot spot known for offering a multitude of toppings features unusual combos ranging from tequila- and lime-marinated chicken pizza to wild mushroom and pesto pizza pie.

Mulberry Street
Known as a classic pizza spot where you can order a large slice of New York pizza with BBQ Chicken, eggplant parmesan or even lasagna, this Beverly Hills pizzeria is run by Academy Award winner Cathy Moriarty, CLARIFICATION- ms moriarty was nominated, but never won.

No listing of LA's best pizzas that doesn't have Vito's (La Cienega between SM and Melrose) on it can truly be taken seriously. Great pies, great slices. Hint: ask for the special spicy pepperoni (not on the menu).

Where is Tomato Pie on Melrose?

Their Grandma pizza is awesome.

I first visited NYC in 1986 on a school trip, and had never been to a place that sold pizza by the slice. But after eating pizza there, I could not stomach the crappy pizza I grew up on in L.A....mainly franchises. I much prefer the thin crust style as well.

If you are near Melrose and Fairfax, check out Tomato Pie.

A little neglect of the East side. Two Boots & Tomato Pie are worthy NYC sprouts. Also, Masa in Echo Park has a delicious Chicago Deep Dish. I still miss Anna Maria's in Williamsburg Boroklyn, cheesy, heart attack goodness!

Do not forget Garage Pizza. Though it appears that I did.

Until you've had the "Bronx Bomber" at RONI'S in Beverly Hills (on Little Santa Monica Blvd right near Century City), you haven't had the BEST Pizza in L.A.
I used to live around the corner from them, and went often. I have lived several miles away now for about 7 years, yet the two or three times a year I go there, they still greet me as though I were still a "regular", and when I do go out of my way to go there, I am still never disappointed. RONI'S pizza is as good as or better than the stuff I grew up with in Brooklyn!

The only one of these I've had is Casa Bianca It's probably a good thing I don't live on the Westside, too many temptations....grrr now I'm craving pizza!

Vito's on La Cienega is ok - but most NY pizza joints beat LA pizza hands down.
They say it's the water, but I think it's a mafia thing.

I guess I lived in Italy for too long to ever again appreciate American "flat thick bread with toppings" that you like to call "pizza": Real pizza dough must be absolutely paper thin and crispy. Everytime I'm in the states the one thing I don't eat is your "thick bread with toppings".

Always reminds me of a place in Rome that sells shredded chicken between a small split roll (no dressing or toppings) and calls it a "hamburger" or Germans that sell foot long thick black sausages (made with blood) or intestine sausages placed in the middle by a tiny thin piece of bread (for holding purposes only) sans mustard or toppings and calling it a "hot dog".

Maybe if you gave your "pizza" a different name ... I could go for it ... but I'll pass. *sigh* I guess I've been here, overseas, too long and have been tarnished for life.

Wolfgang Puck did a pretty good job of recreating Italian pizza at Spago in Bev Hills and then everyone copied and ruined it. But you are right - once you've had Pizza in Italy - everything else sux.

I seem to prefer the thin crust anyway.

Some of these ultra puffy cheesy gloppy thingys with tons of crap on em can't really be called
pizzas, more correctly they are calorie bombs. Less is more.

Best pizza is one you make yourself easily with a pita/wrap SOME cheese, vegs, and some meat
heat in oven till crisp-DONE.

Wildflour on Main St in Santa Monica is better than a lot of these...

One thing I noticed in the photos is these pizzas are cooked the way they should
be - well done. Too many times I get pizza and it's gooey, under-cooked, soft
and mushy. Pizza should be well done because it bringsd the sugars out
and the crunchy crust texture compliments the cheesy sauce.
I started making pizza in the early seventies at Diamanti's in New York
when I was in high school. Egidio Pizzuti (Gino) and Claudio Lo Curzio (Claude)
taught me everything they knew and learned while serving as chef mates
in the Italian merchant marine.
Muzzo makes great pizza downtown L.A.
I think Moriarty did a good job with Mulberry Street in Bev Hills.
But I still prefer Lombardo's in New York in Little Italy
and I never miss going to Arthur Avenue in the Bronx
or Zabar's Deli in Manhattan.
Wow. Now I'm hungry.
Ciao.
