Sea Shepherd Conservation Society: Whaling Ship Deliberately 'Plowed' Into Our Boat (VIDEO)

SYDNEY A conservation group's boat had its bow sheared off and was taking on water Wednesday after it was struck by a Japanese whaling ship in the frigid waters of Antarctica, the group said.

The boat's six crew members were safely transferred to another of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's vessels, the newly commissioned Bob Barker. The boat is named for the American game show host who donated $5 million to buy it.

The clash was the most serious in the past several years, during which the Sea Shepherd has sent vessels into far-southern waters to try to harass the Japanese fleet into ceasing its annual whale hunt.

Clashes using hand-thrown stink bombs, ropes meant to tangle propellers and high-tech sound equipment have been common in recent years, and crashes between ships have sometimes occurred.

The society said its vessel Ady Gil – a high-tech speedboat that resembles a stealth bomber – was hit by the Japanese ship the Shonan Maru near Commonwealth Bay and had about 10 feet (three meters) of its bow knocked off.

Locky Maclean, the first mate of the society's lead ship, said one crewman from New Zealand appeared to have suffered two cracked ribs, but the others were uninjured. The crew members were safely transferred to the group's third vessel, though the Ady Gil's captain remained on board to see what could be salvaged, he said.

"The original prognostic was that it was sinking, but at this point it is flooded with water but it seems to still have a bit of buoyancy," Maclean told The Associated Press by satellite phone from the ship, the Steve Irwin.

The group accused the Japanese ship of deliberately ramming the Ady Gil.

"They were stopped dead in the water when the incident occurred," Maclean said of the Ady Gil. "When they realized that the Shonan Maru was aiming right for them, they tried to go into reverse to get the bow out of the way but it was too late. The Shonan Maru made a course correction and plowed directly into the front end of the boat."

Glenn Inwood, a New Zealand-based spokesman for the Institute of Cetacean Research, the Japanese government-linked body that carries out the hunt, disputed Sea Shepherd's account, saying video shot from the whaler showed the conservationists' boat moving toward the whaler just before the collision.

"The Shonan Maru steams to port to avoid a collision. I guess they, the Ady Gil, miscalculated," Inwood told The Associated Press. "Sea Shepherd claims that the Shonan Maru has rammed the Ady Gil and cut it in half – its claim is just not vindicated by the video."

Japan's Fisheries Agency said it was still checking details about the clash. Spokesman Toshinori Uoya said there were no injuries on the Japanese side.

Sea Shepherd sends boats to Antarctic waters each southern summer to try to stop the Japanese whaling fleet from killing whales under what it calls a scientific whaling program. Conservationists and many countries say the program is a front for commercial whaling.

Each side routinely accuses the other of dangerous activity during what has become a cat-and-mouse chase in one of the world's most remote regions.

Australia and New Zealand – which both have Antarctic territories and are among the closest nations to the waters where the hunt goes on – have urged both sides to show restraint, warning that they are far away from rescue if anything goes wrong.

"Our strongest condemnation applies to any violent or dangerous activity that takes place in these remote and inhospitable waters," Australian Environment Minister Peter Garrett said Wednesday. He said he could confirm the collision, but that details were still unclear.

Wednesday's confrontation with whalers marked the first for the 1,200-ton Bob Barker, which rescued the crew. Sea Shepherd only recently bought the ship after its namesake, the former host of the "The Price Is Right" game show and a longtime animal rights acitvist, donated the money. Barker met Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson through a fellow activist and said he was instantly impressed.

"He said he thought he could put the Japanese whaling fleet out of business if he had $5 million," Barker recalled. "I said, 'I think you do have the skills to do that, and I have $5 million, so let's get it on,' so that's what we did."

Barker, 86, said he was "genuinely proud" to be associated with Sea Shepherd.

The Ady Gil, meanwhile, clashed earlier Wednesday with another Japanese ship, the whaling fleet's mothership, the Nisshin Maru.

The Institute of Cetacean Research said the Ady Gil came "within collision distance" of the Nisshin Maru's bow and repeatedly dangled a rope in the water that could have entangled the ship's rudder and propeller.

The Ady Gil's crew lobbed small projectiles designed to release a foul smell, and the whalers responded by firing high-powered hoses to keep the Sea Shepherd vessels away, the institute said in a statement.

"The obstructionist activities of the Sea Shepherd threaten the lives and property of those involved in our research, are very dangerous and cannot be forgiven," it said.

Maclean confirmed the earlier clash.

Japan's whaling fleet left in November for its annual hunt in Antarctic waters. Uoya said that for security reasons, details of the fleet's composition, the number of whales it hopes to take and the number of crew members are not being released to the public.

The Ady Gil is a 78-foot (24-meter) black-painted trimaran made of carbon fiber and Kevlar in a design meant to pierce waves. It was built to challenge the record for the quickest circumnavigation of the globe and can travel faster than 46 mph (75 kph).

Sea Shepherd unveiled the Ady Gil last October saying a California millionaire with the same name had donated most of the money for it. At the time, the group said the boat would be used to intercept and physically block Japanese harpoon vessels.

Its all rather silly. I don't think whaling is threatening the various whale species. Whaling should certainly be regulated, but lets not get on a high horse to outlaw whaling if we aren't also going to outlaw 'cowing.'

Millions of cows are sytematically slaughtered in massive death factories every day. Same with sheep. It goes on in Australia Mr. Rudd.

Don't get me wrong, I like a good steak. I'm just saying 'shut up' already with the save the whales crap unless you are going to be more consistant.

All of you people who own Hondas and Toyotas are supporting the murder of whales.

Paul Watson will not be happy until one of his volunteers gets killed. It looks like sooner or later he is going to have his way.

One thing is for sure, If they Sea Shepherd had tried this with a military boat, they would never have gotten within 100 yards without being blown out of the water. The speed boat was trying to disable the Maru's propellers and rudder all day long. I would not put the Japanese at fault if they had used an RPG against the smaller boat. A vessel should have the right to defend itself from harassment.in the high seas.

Bottom line, don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

In as much as I am not a fan of whaling, there are other targets out there. The Faroe Islanders kill Pilot whales every year and Iceland and Norway also cull Minke whales. But portraying Scandavians as villians does make for good television or fund-raising when there is another ethnic group to single out. Minke whales number over 700,000 where the Japanese are fishing while there are far fewer in the northern seas. Why not protect the whale populations that are more at risk?
05:51 PM on 01/11/2010
Do your homework. Sea Shepherd sank the better part of Norway's whaling fleet while in harbor. So much for your racist angle.

It is a comparatively small organization, and oceans are vast. They can't be everywhere at once or they would be.

Sea Shepherd is the only thing that stands between the whales and slaughter. As Harriet Beecher Stowe once said, "It's about taking the side of the weak against the strong, something the best people have always done." Go Sea Shepherd!!!

Cheers for you BoldChapeau.

It takes courage and dedication to try to protect animals in freezing waters, even at the risk of putting yourself in the line of fire. At this point, every sea creature is an endangered species due to the enormous amout of toxins being poured into the ocean by industry. We stop the damage now, or we die. There's no later. It's already here.

So Sea Shepherd, you go girl.

Paul Watson is an DUMB*** and so are the amateurs on his boat. They got what they deserved. These people make fools of themselves and the Japanese are sitting on that boat laughing at them
03:08 AM on 01/12/2010
I repeat:

The Japanese vessel is not a "very large boat", in fact it is designed to be "very" maneuverable for it's size. Don't know where you got your Captains License, but nothing will excuse the Dishonorable Japanese Captains actions. Study your Rules of the Road; I do understand "Law of Tonnage" (as if it exists) on the open Sea, and this Japanese Captain is hanging his hat on this. He never identified his vessel as being restricted in its ability to maneuver, as it wasn't. He was crossing the path of a vessel off his starboard bow, then turned to starboard just prior to impact to ensure a collision. Then the continued use of water cannons on a sinking vessel in freezing waters... this is ATTEMPTED MURDER AND AN ACT OF COWARDICE!

Ongoing Slaughter of Whales, rounding up and Slaughter of Dolphin, The Japanese are Dishaonorable and need to be exposed to the world for the morally and ethically bankrupt culture they perpetuate.

The Price is Wrong Mr.Barker - Whales, Whalers and your sponsored conservationist lives are all priceless. Take the battle to make lasting changes by passing legislation to stop whaling and create new jobs for the whalers.
11:42 PM on 01/10/2010
Wrongo. Legislation is already exists under the United Nations World Charter for Nature and the International Whaling Commission. Japan simply chooses to ignore it. As far as finding legitimate work for these criminals, they are on their own. People like you always pulpiteer on the sanctity of human life whenever animal welfare is mentioned. Other than that, you yawn and change the channel whenever murder, carnage, and death tolls are the topic. What hypocrisy!
09:08 AM on 01/08/2010
One day the whalers will arm thier boats with 76mm guns and put a stop to this harrassment. They have a right to protect themselves and thier vessel on the high seas. What the Sea Shepard does is nothing more than piracy, and will one day be dealt with accordingly.
07:34 PM on 01/17/2010
Pirates are they? For trying to defend an endangered animal?

Then what would you call people who ignore international law, murder an endangered animal for a buck, and then lie and call it research?

I think I'd call them Republicans.
08:46 AM on 01/08/2010
I've seen bigger boats of sea sheppard ramming other boats also, this seems to be something that is normally done by them so if they loose once in a while its t be expected. Their going to kill someone out there, a human over a whale? Seems very reckless.
08:40 AM on 01/08/2010
I think it a bad idea to try and ram a boat 5 times the size of your boat. I'm sure the japanese crew at least got a few minutes of laughs
07:45 AM on 01/08/2010
The Whalers continue to own the protesters. Their tactic of chartering flights to scout out the location protesters’ ships was brilliant. What was even more brilliant was to send out the Shonan Maru 2 as a decoy for the protesters the chase around the empty sea for a couple of weeks. Finally, the sinking of that pesky speed boat was a tactic straight out of the Sea Shepard's play book. In 2008 Paul Watson's previous flag ship was seized by the Canadians after it rammed a Canadian Coast Guard Cutter.
03:24 PM on 01/10/2010
The Bob Barker shall meet a similar fate in Canadian waters. That will be 6.5 million dollars of donated funds lost.

Glad to see that all of that "scientific research" isn't keeping them from putting out a fleet of whale hunting ships to kill and sell whale products.

The Japanese aren't the only ones who have a taste for whale blubber, but they are the only ones pretending that they are killing whales for scientific research.

Maybe we should assign the Japanese to do "scientific research" on pandas while they are at it.
04:20 AM on 01/08/2010
Wow people are going crazy over some stupid whales. These particular whales being hunted aren't even close to being endangered nor will the insignificant numbers killed effect the environment in any conceivable way.. what so ever. In contrast to something actually important like global warming. Never mind any one of the horrible things that is happening to a large amount of people at any given moment. Not when we have to save Free Willy.

Also I think some people may be a little harsh in their criticizing of Japan, you know, that strong democracy in a region where many other countries are struggling and are not so lucky. Not to mention a reliable ally when USA wasn't so popular internationally (the George Bush Jr. era). More importantly though, Japan gives us video games, and I would let every whale die before I lost my good pals Mario, Kratos and Snake. To all you animal lovers out there that think I'm being insensitive just let me just quote a brilliant Harlem rapper named Cam'ron.

"You got pets me too mines are dead
Doggy on fire minks gators that's necessary
Accessories my closet's pet cemetery"
(Cam'ron - down and out)

Captain Paul Watson is my hero! Of all the ocean/sealife conservation groups, The Sea Shepherd Society is actually doing something to help stop the needless slaughter of whales. Blessings to him and his crew as they battle evil on the high seas. And kudos to the remarkably generous Bob Barker for his $5 million donation to buy another ship. With such major donors and those putting their lives on the line at sea (may God protect them) the war against whaling can finally be won.

And this story should be on the main page!
02:54 AM on 01/08/2010
"needless slaughter of whales"? Listen, those japanese NEED their sushi!
01:14 PM on 01/08/2010
Unfortunately Paul Watson is not a hero. He is an uneducated and dangerous man who's only interest is his legacy. He is a "babbler" when he speaks and cannot engage in a logical argument. Members of his organization have engaged in cheap and disgusting threats toward common hard-working fisher persons. The lost of the Ady Gill could have been avoided (study the video carefully, they were under power and could have and should have given way to the larger ship). He is a man more interested in publicity and fund-raising for the "off season" lifestyle. His organization "twists" the facts, still uses outdated images and video to satisfy their agenda. How is convinced Bob Barker to give him 5 million escapes me?
01:24 AM on 01/09/2010
Speaking of being a "babbler", I'm impressed by your skills in this arena romika3. The Japanese vessel was not restricted in its ability to maneuver. The Ady Gil was either not moving, or moving slowly at idle evidenced by the lack of prop wash. The Dishonorable Japanese Captain was crossing the path of a vessel off his starboard bow, therefore had a duty to make all efforts to take evasive action to avoid a collision. In plain English, the Ady Gil had Right of Way. Law of Tonnage is a tongue in cheek expression. The video taken from the Bob Barker clearly shows the Japanese vessel turning to starboard just prior to impact, ensuring a collision. The Dishonorable Japanese Captain should be tried for attempted murder considering the circumstances.

The ongoing slaughter of Whales, the rounding up and slaughtering of Dolphin, It is time the world come to realize what a morally and ethically bankrupt culture the Japanese have created.
12:19 AM on 01/08/2010
Just out of curiosity, what do they (the Sea Shepherds) think they are going to do with a boat built for speed? In order to go fast, the boat must be light. Light Vs Heavy...I think we all know who will win.

This is from the Sea Shepherd Website regarding the unveiling of the Ady Gill:
"Due to its speed capabilities, up to 50 knots, Captain Paul Watson (Sea Shepherd President and Founder) intends to use the Ady Gil to intercept and physically block the harpoon ships from illegally slaughtering whales." (http://www.seashepherd.org/news-and-media/news-091020-1.html)

Why use the ship in this manner and then complain when it physically blocked the ship and got sunk because it is not built to block other ships?

Minor point: Isn't it bad luck to rename a ship? This ship used to be called Earthrace, is renamed Ady Gill, and now lies in Davy Jones' Locker.
12:19 AM on 01/08/2010
These anti-whaling pirates make for great television. But they purposely crowd the whalers and are trying to damage their ships. So they shouldnt complain if they get bumped occasionally.

Well ya dad is loud and honest. If my graammer aint right so what. i been on aul of the great lakes round michigaan in very large botes. First thing you need to know is dont get in the way of large ships. It dont take a genius to figure that out. They can take a veery longg time to turn if you be the smaller bote u must stay out of the way. there kount the mistaces in gramer and spellin you the genius.
