1 in 5 Working-Age American Men Don't Have A Job

One in five working-age American men does not have a job, according to the latest federal employment numbers, an all-time high that illustrates the extraordinary toll this recession has taken on male-dominated professions in particular.

Men are more likely to work in sectors like manufacturing and construction that are more sensitive to economic downturns. But this downturn has been particularly brutal on those industries, leading some observers to call it a "mancession."

Only 80.3 percent of men age 25-54 had jobs in December -- the lowest since the Bureau of Labor Statistics started collecting that data in 1948 -- at which point the figure was 94.4 percent. When the recession began in December 2007, less than 13 percent of men in this age bracket were out of work.

The numbers are derived from what the BLS calls its employment-to-population ratio. While the non-working number in this case includes men who have voluntarily chosen to stay out of the workforce, such as students and stay-at-home dads, in many ways it provides a clearer picture of the depth of the nation's unemployment situation.

The percentage of women age 25-54 who have work is also down, but not as dramatically. Some 69.1 percent of those women are employed, about the same as in 1998. Women dominate the fields such as education, health services and government. The health industry and government payrolls are booming, and are expected to continue growing, thanks to an aging population and recently-enacted stimulus programs to boost the economy, respectively.

Overall, the percentage of Americans over age 16 that holds a job continues to slide, reaching 58.2 percent. That's a 25-year-low.

"It is striking that we have managed to reverse more than 26 years of increasing labor force participation in this downturn," said Dean Baker, co-director of the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Economic and Policy Research. "It will take a long time for workers to get over the effects of this recession."

The official unemployment rate, which doesn't include people who are underemployed or who have given up looking for work, remained at 10 percent.

According to the BLS, employers nationwide shed an additional 85,000 jobs in December. Analysts had predicted a decline of just 10,000 jobs.

The extent of the job losses indicates that the optimism generated by last month's slight dip in the unemployment rate (from 10.2 to 10 percent) may have been unfounded. Revised figures released today show an actual increase of 4,000 jobs in November - but that's now been offset 20 times over in December.

More than 6.3 million people are looking for jobs, according to the new figures, a 14 percent increase from December 2008.

Lawrence Mishel, president of the Economic Policy Institute, points out that 1.9 million workers have left the labor force since May. These are people who are either seeking work or working. More than 660,000 workers left the labor force between November and December alone.

"Absent this flight from the labor market the unemployment rate would have risen substantially in December, up 0.4 percent, rather than hold steady," he said in an e-mail.

Mishel also notes that the population has grown, which should have led to a rise in the labor force. Instead, just the opposite has happened. He writes:

Over the last year, the working age population grew by 0.8 percent, so we would have expected a growth in the labor force, those working or seeking work, by 1.2 million people. Instead, the labor force fell 1.5 million, indicating that the labor force is missing 2.7 million people, more than half of whom abandoned the labor force. The erosion of the labor force started occurring after May, with 271,000 withdrawing each month for the last seven months. Two-thirds of those fleeing the labor market since May have been adult men.

Peter007. Your generalizations are half wrong and partially right. Study the history of China's and America's economic systems since 1980. Then write about any comparisions and differences from the basis of knowledge.

The article title is out of the 1950s. What about us women who are the sole financial support for our families?
12:58 PM on 01/10/2010
That's because employers pay women lower wages then men and give them raises less often.

Let's see. U.S.A corporations have been shipping American jobs in mass to China because our corporations have total control of our political system. They have this control because boneheads like you mindlessly repeat the Corporate/capitalist mantra.
The real test as far as living standards is to compare ourselves to more "socilaist" delveloped countries. Like New Zealand, Australia, France, Germany, all of Scandanavia, the Netherlands< Canada etc.. These countries people all live better than the average American. Sure the top 10% live better here, biut who cares I am talking about the other 90%. I know this because I have spent a long time in those countries. I realize you "conservatives" mindlessly repeat Rush Limbaugh/Sarih Plain Drivel. People who never go anywhere. The fact is the best system is a mixed system is where capitalism is strictly controlled so that the worst impulses of greed are restricted.
And please don't tell me to move there if I like it so much. These countries won't let us poor Americans Immigrate to these countries anymore.

Okay, who is LYING here. The headline above states that unemployment is steady at 10% and here they claim one out of five has no jobs? Who in the heck can't do the math here? In some states it is more like 1 out of 3 has no job. I am sick of hearing the same lie over and over again. Pretty soon, when the states' coffers run empty because of no unemployment funds then will they tell us the truth????
10:07 PM on 01/09/2010
There is no lying -- the fact is that the unemployment rate is NOT the number of people out of work who would like a job. Instead, the unemployment rate reflects the number of people out of work who are also receiving unemployment benefits. So if you are unemployed and getting unemployment benefits this month you are part of the 10% -- next month if you have exhausted your benefit period, you are no longer counted. Then you join the other 10+% of unemployed people who are now "hard core unemployed" -- and are not factored into the unemployment rate. This is not new. Does it make sense? Only if you want people to think things are better than they are.....

It's all in the way the statistics are compiled... true, one in five men (age 16+) are without a job, but that is counting high school age kids and retiree age men all together. Also, the unemployment rate doesn't consider the people that have stopped looking for work. They are considered out of the labor force as they aren't searching any more.

I've got a brother and brother in law that don't ever look for work. Still sucking at the teat in their 20s and 30s.

The natural order ordains that the 20% unemployed are the army that overturns the system.

Aparently our corporate masters did not learn from the Romans. "Bread and Circus's" or the unemployed will revolt. Of course "Jersey Shore" may be just what keeps them in power.

And yet we need "pathways to citizenship" for people who are here illegally. Seems to me that there isn't enough work to go around for folks who were actually born here (or immigrated lawfully).

It would be funny if it weren't so tragically real.
01:15 PM on 01/09/2010
The ones who scream the loudest are the cause of this mess that hopefully someday a bleedin heart lefty like me can correct.

SIMPLY enforce the law (put those rich bloodsuckers in jail)- do not hire illegals - no jobs - no immigrant problem.

They say no American will do their job. That’s a lie. I have competed with them for jobs and low wages all my life.

I do not blame them; if I were in their place I would do the same.

Excellent post! I coudn't agree more (especially about simply enforcing the existing laws).

If you are currently unemployed, good luck in your job search! :)
04:06 PM on 01/09/2010
True, as a student I used to compete with migrant farm workers for seasonal factory work. Corporations prefer the migrants, because they never move on to better permanent jobs, where as young Americans eventually want living wages.

The solution to this economic mess is simple. Unemployed people need to move to Washington D.C., where the economy is booming and more people are getting hired all the time.

I hear Nancy Pelosi will be hiring a whole building full of accountants just to add up all the money we need to borrow from the Chinese to support her programs.
04:08 PM on 01/09/2010
No need to move. Goldman Sachs is hiring anyone with a computer to send emails to Congress for 4 cents an email. Grass Roots Lobbying at its best.

There are job openings right now. Part and full time. Short term but better than nothing. The government is looking for people to help with the Census. From what I can see the pay is between $15 and $25 per hour paid weekly. There are offices in every city. Go to the Census web page and get an appointment.

Lets see. Since 1975, China has moved toward an unregulated Capitalist economy. Since 1933, the US has moved toward a more socialist, central controlled economy. The New Deal, and the Great Society. Which country has progressed in economic terms faster and why. ?

“I don't feel sorry for anyone who voted republican.

If you put the republicans in power you voted yourself out of a job.

Myth: Republicans are good for business - busted ( now laughable )
Myth: Republicans are strong on defense - busted ( late night talk show fodder )

They've proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that they
- can't keep America safe: 9/11
- have no compassion: Katrina victims
- can't do arithmetic: Fiscal Crisis 2007
- can't wage war: Iraq/Afghanistan
- can't follow the Constitution: waterboarding
- can't follow international agreements: waterboarding
- can't care for the elderly: Medicaid prescription donut hole

they do know how to steal, lie, kill Americans, deregulate, cultivate hate, drill baby drill, and give tax breaks to the rich
...and cheat on their wives - almost forgot”

Bush told the truth once (by mistake of course)

"It's amazing I won. I was running against peace, prosperity, and incumbency." -George W. Bush, June 14, 2001, speaking to Swedish Prime Minister Goran Perrson, unaware that a live television camera was still rolling.
10:56 PM on 01/08/2010
Not a mistake in what he said, but in being overheard.

I'm sure you don't drive on public highways (tax money), right?

You have your own testing laboratory to ensure the safety of the food you eat (tax money), correct?

If you ever got robbed, you would never call the police (tax money), am I right?

You wouldn't send your kid to public school (tax money), yes?

If your house was burning down, you would refuse help from the fire department (tax money), I'm sure.

Because if you did any of those things, with the attitude you have, when YOU looked in the mirror, you would see a hy.po.cr.ite.

You keep repeating the same lame argument because its all you have. Roads are paid for by gasoline taxes and thats similar to a user fee. Thats usually a state function . Police are paid out of local taxes not Federal. None of your food you eat goes to any laboratory. Thats insane given the huge mount of food consumed. Public schools were established for the poor. Middle class and wealthy people could afford their own schools. Today, students are forced to public schools, even if they want to go to private schools. AND, schools are paid for at the local and state levels.

What good does the Federal Government do?

To think that we've become aware of your foolish comments on the internet which got its start and several infusions of capital from American TAX DOLLARS. Your provider is reselling you a resource that only exists because of the US governments wise investment in the innovation and its infrastructure to begin with.

People like you are so ignorant and you practice disdain and condemnation for only some socialist contrivances while you take full advantage and enjoy others, like the internet and who knows what else you use...courts, roads, police public education, etc.

hypocrites all of you....
