Charlie Weis, the former Notre Dame head coach, is heading to the Kansas City Chiefs to serve as offensive coordinator.

The Kansas City Chiefs have hired former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis as offensive coordinator.

The move comes after a difficult first season for Chiefs head coach Todd Haley, whose team finished 4-12 but showed promise late in the year. Though Haley kept his job, postseason shake-ups have left the team looking for a number of new coaches, including offensive and defensive coordinator. Today's announcement wraps up the former loose end, and as for the latter, reports suggest that former Cleveland head coach Romeo Crennel may be in line to be D.C.

Weis started his five-year career at Notre Dame hot, going 19-6 in his first two seasons. But the last three years, the Irish have posted a disappointing 16-21 record, and Weis was fired at the end of the 2009 season.

He wasn't on the market long, though. He expressed some interest in becoming the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears in December, but talk quickly turned to the Chiefs.

The team was an especially good fit for Weis because of his history with Haley, the Chiefs' head coach. The two worked together as assistants for the New York Jets for three years. From the AP:

"This marriage seemed very, very simple," Weis said. "I'm very excited to be a part of a growing process that has been started here in the last year."

I think it's a great move for Weiss. Judging from what he said about Pete Carroll recently, I'm not impressed with him as a person, but his experience as OC under Belichick during those SB's is considerable, and should work well with Matt Cassell, who as a former Pat probably looks up to Charlie.
