Karl Lagerfeld Shoots Plus-Size Burlesque Star Miss Dirty Martini (PHOTOS)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/18/2010 5:12 am Updated: 05/25/2011 3:10 pm

It looks like Karl Lagerfeld is eating his words. After reportedly saying "no one wants to see curvy women" and "you've got fat mothers with their bags of chips sitting in front of the television and saying that thin models are ugly," the German designer has seized the opportunity to get even more publicity by photographing plus-size burlesque star Miss Dirty Martini for V Magazine's highly anticipated "Size Issue."

From V's press release:

Miss Dirty Martini poses alongside Coco look-alike, actress Jane Schmitt, who once starred as Gabrielle Chanel in one of Lagerfeld's short films, "Paris-Shanghai: A Fantasy." Wearing accessories by Chanel and Lagerfeld--along with pasties, cut-out bras, garter belts and stockings--Miss Dirty Martini looks surprisingly right at home in Coco's Rue Cambon apartment.

When asked about why she accepted the invitation to pose for V, Miss Dirty Martini said: "Posing on the Double C's, modeling like my life depended on it, I thought, 'Why not? Why can't designers make fashion that mimics the architecture of hips and busts and then choose models that wear it perfectly?'"

Photos from V magazine, which hits newsstands January 14th.

Pretty, sexy woman in not-so-sexy but trashy outfit.

Is the photog glorifying her or dissing her? I'm not sure.

But her own comment is the best, and in one sentence describes EVERYTHING wrong with the fashion industry that glorifies broomsticks:

"Why can't designers make fashion that mimics the architecture of hips and busts and then choose models that wear it perfectly?"

Karl...Karl...Karl LOL...one minute you absolutely hate the idea of a plus size model and the next minute you cast one in your ad...there is much to be said on capitalizing on what is "all the rage." This does say that is plus size women start speaking with their dollars then some designers will start to listen.

Largerfeld has never really had kind words for people who are overweight ["overweight" in the model world definition of overweight]. This makes me think [through these photos] that he sees overweight people as a fetish and still not model material.

I'm a bit surprised considering Lagerfeld's dislike of people that don't look like matchsticks ever sense he turned himself into a skeleton.

She should star in another Bagdad Cafe . . . Sweet!

She looks great! However, I don't really like her outfit. It could be more tasteful, but hey, she's a burlesque dancer, so that goes with the territory. I think this is great! There are people in every shape and size that are beautiful - beautiful skin, beautiful faces. The whole skinny model thing is, in my opinion, unhealthy since most of the women alive are average size 12. Overall, this is a beneficial image(s) to put into advertising world. I bet bigger women will LOVE this!!! (Hey, I'm a size 4 and look fat compared to the 14 year old pre-pubescent girls in most ads).

She looks like fun.
Contrast with Paris, Lindsay, that Rachel Zoe person, etc....

There seems to be a lot of plus-size fashion shoots lately - I suppose it'll become "in" for the next few years or so and then everyone can complain that it's glamorizing un unhealthy figure, just like they have with skinny models. Can't they just use healthy sized women for once? Not emaciated, and not obese...

Agreed.

Agree that healthy normal size women should be the choice, but this woman is probably better classified as overweight than obese, probably. Also, she doesn't carry a lot of weight in the waist, which means she is generally healthier than most overweight people.

Yes, I would agree with that, she probably wouldn't classify as obese, but overweight. Definitely had a few more french fries than would be considered healthy though. My point is why does the fashion industry always has to take things to extremes? I saw a documentary about a plus-size beauty pageant, where everyone was basically obese. There were curvy women who came to the audition, who didn't make it into the pageant because they weren't big enough, as the very obese people got upset because the curvy women were too small and it wasn't 'fair'. Those women were still too overweight to get into a skinny girl competition, so where do normal, healthy women fit in? They were very beautiful women, and the plus-size girls were grossly overweight.

And just as anorexia is considered an illness, which it is, over-eating should also be considered an illness. They're both a type of addiction, and shouldn't be glamorized.
