On Tuesday afternoon, Conan O'Brien released a statement saying he will not follow an 11:35 pm Jay Leno show with a 12:05 'Tonight Show' out of respect for the 'Tonight Show' brand and for Jimmy Fallon. He also takes shots at NBC.

People of Earth:

In the last few days, I've been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I've been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I've been absurdly lucky. That said, I've been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn't the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn't matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Story continues below

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it's always been that way.

Yours,

Conan

Conan, never fear-- where ever you go, whatever you do, your audience will always hang on your every word from now into eternity. You're a shining 'red' star, and NBC just can't quash your light.
You're a stand-up guy (pun intended) who holds the grace and poise of Carson for the generations who didn't have the pleasure of watching him on live tv.
Keep holding your head up. You won't lose us.

Once the silent movie decade was over, did they need to name an heir to Chaplin? Conan, stop fighting with Jay over who gets dad's old 8 track player.

Both Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien need a realty check. With the economy, unemployment and houses going into forecloser, the both should be ASHAMED of themselves. They are nothing but 2 funny guys with inflated salaries and even MORE inflated egos. They have contributed nothing to society. Take your money and run Jay And Conan....your 15 minutes are waaay over.
Maybe if the Network had taken the MILLIONS they spent on the both of you, they could have spent it on quality programming and had a quality network.

Well, no. NBC's problem is the lack of any good shows to air in the first place, and the executives' hedging their bets on every decision, which ultimately just makes a mess of things. I don't think it's wrong to care about comedy, or Conan and Jay.

Jay Leno needs to "get over himself." The Tonight Show is not failing in ratings. NBC made a hiderous mistake, not to mention a huge RISK, in putting Jay Leno at a 10:00 pm time slot, thereby totally screwing up the primetime schedule. Come on NBC -- ADMIT IT -- The Jay Leno show is the show that is FALLING IN RATINGS -- but in Hollywierd there is power in money and in coersion, so Conan gets screwed and he gets ousted. Obviously, no one was watching Jay at 10 pm -- he cries "wah, wah, wah and gets his way like always. Conan's Tonight Show was quite entertaining, charming and his show was a good time reminder of Johnny Carson's old shows -- something Jay could never live up to.

@ socialexplorations - hope you read this but u obvisouly do not watch Conan's show cuz he is not funny nor has he been classy about this whole situation... infact the whole situation is his fault...
This mess started when Conan was negotiating his contract 5/6 years ago and asked for the Tonight Show instead of asking for it when Jay retired. NBC was dumb enough to ask Jay if he would mind quitting because they didn't want to lose Conan!!! Can you imagine how that made Jay feel, especially since his ratings were number one? Conan's greed, and NBC's stupidity is what created this mess. Jay is the only one acting with any integrity.

And Leno is not funny. If you like Leno better, you're not funny.

I would like to thank all of you have commented. Joining HP today because I am so impressed with the level of civility and dialog that is being exchanged. I thought that having an honest good debate without mean spirited comments was a lost form.

That being said.

Conan: Very impressive how you have handled this mess. I think you are a brilliant host and have always enjoyed your sense of humor. I don't understand why Jay is being brought? My assumptions were his reign as the talk show host was over, you got the gig after waiting and work hard for years. Then, Jay is on an hour before you? Whats up with that? Now Jay is taking your time slot because the 10 o'clock show didn't make it?

Way to stay classy Conan, you will get an even better deal than what you had before and will end up with new opportunities that a far better.

FIRST OF ALL, JAY WAS NUMBER #1, AND CONAN IS NOT REALLY FUNNY, AND HIS SHOW REALLY TURNED ME OFF TO LETTERMAN......... SECOND, WITH THE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE UNEMPLOYED WITH NO MONEY, CONAN IS **&****** ABOUT 1/2 HOUR AT $10 MILLION+ A YEAR... NOW THATS REALLL FUNNY, NOW HE CAN GET IN LINE WITH THE NATION....

GREAT FOR JAY LENO, BUT HE JUST AS IGNORANT AS CONAN, TO BELIEVE THAT HE IS JUST AS SPECIAL "SHAME ON HIM"" ALSO NBC IS NOT BLAME - THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE START TO PAY STARS MILLIONS AND THEY DECIDE THAT THERE WORTH MORE. ....
PERHAPS MAYBE BUY FORCLOSURES AND CARSSSSS........ YOU DON'T REALLY SEE THESE STARS STEP UP TO THE NEEDY UNLESS THE PRESS IS AROUND...

CONAN GET A LIFE, FALLON WAS MORE FUNNY THEN YOU.........

Conan, you are a class act.

I support Conan. Here's my promise. If Conan is not released from NBC as he wants because of Zucker's vindictiveness. I will boycott all NBC shows for the 3.5 years he is being held hostage.

The choice is your NBC.
bikinggeezer   03:45 AM on 1/15/2010
I've tried to watch Jay several times, and feel he just isn't funny any longer. What is so wrong with stepping down after a long run? Conan is getting screwed, and I think NBC will get what they deserve. And Conan is being very gracious about the matter, way to go COCO!
pascaljim   03:08 AM on 1/15/2010
Leno is unfunny at ten, will he be funny at eleven thirty.....I don't think so....

WOW! what a class act! he's truly retained his integrity and dedication to the art of comedy regardless of how rich or successful he is. Leno on the other hand, has been a total failure both as a person and as an entertainer. Kudos to Conan! people like that never stay down when they're shot
