Obamas

People.com:

President and Mrs. Obama reveal to PEOPLE in a new interview that the girls - Malia, 11, and Sasha, 8 - are limited to Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel.

"They can only watch the kid-TV channels for the most part, because you just never know," says Mrs. Obama. The president, however, does make an exception: "Unless they want to watch football with me, which they're always welcome. But somehow they haven't been drawn to that yet."

Yay for the Obamas. I hope that the kids are encouraged to read as much as possible. I had a number of people in my reading cheering section when I was growing up, and, to this day, I appreciate that.

It's not a bad idea to limit television to the weekends. I'm sure the girls have lots of homework to do!

Now if only the rest of America had the good sense to turn off garbage programming like Jersey Shore.

See that's what you call "home training" being passed on. There are somethings children are not allowed to do even in this "great open society" and likewise there are something adults should not do even though "this is America." Most Americans concern themselves with what's going on in peoples bedroom while looking the other way at the blatant degredation of societal mores. No one can convince me that the abhorrent behavior that is being shown on these programs, and I've only read the news articles never watched the show, is not debasing and destroying the fabric of our country.

It's unbelievable how disassociated and unaffected society has come with their conscience and mores. People lie and cheat and are rewarded all the time, yet we are punishing our own because of how God made them. Dispicable.

Totally agree. As a kid, I was influenced by TV. Back in my day, we had wholesome TV shows. I remembered as a kid, I wanted to be Bozo the clown. Then, I wanted to be a policeman because I love one of the TV cop show. And, then I wanted to be a nurse--patterning after the some TV show featuring nurses and doctors. Sorry, I am brain dead since I cannot for the life of me remember the name of those shows.

People who say that TV does not influence kids are not dealing with reality. I have made a decision not to watch any reality show. I use to only watch Jon & Kate Plus 8 until I discovered that they are train wrecks. Now, I've decided no reality shows for me. None! I see no good that come out of reality shows. I will now treat all reality shows like Jerry Springer. I will not watch the train wrecks.

disney has pole dancing miley on there...and vapid humor. i would suggest some of the science and travel channels. i am not impressed with this id friendly stuff. what about food tv? what is one of the girls has an interest in cooing? traveling? the show how is it made? the series 'the presidents' on history channel. perhaps the first lady is not aware of what is offered, thats the best i can offer in any defense

All the stuff on the "Science and travel" channels, they are probably getting from books and the internet...the TV is probably used for relaxation and entertainment purposes on weekend.

What kind of headline is this!!!!

They never said their children weren't allowed to watch Jersey Shore. They only said their children were restricted to Kid-TV like Disney.

Why not make the headline 'Sasha and Malia NOT ALLOWED TO WATCH TOP CHEF'!!! It'd be just as accurate.

the people on "Jersey Shore" are the worst stereotype of Italians that I've seen. this show is pure trash and not fit for tv no matter what channel it's on. I believe the target audience for this show are people that mirror the folks on the show.

Back in the early 90's when M-TV was slipping heavy into teased haired glam rock videos that always seemed to include starry eyed groupies getting slammed around or tied down I cut the cable off.
I had an impressionable 11 yr old and a toddler who did not need to see that cr ap.
I never regretted it.
My kids watched it at their friends houses no doubt BUT that's not the same as being able to tap into it every time they turned on the TV.

I can't imagine the kids lobbying to watch this show.

It's one of hundreds of headlines on HP. So what, it's a soft headline...I like this one. This family is in fact a good role model. I like that they don't allow their children to watch trash tv.
