NEW YORK — Officials say New York Gov. David Paterson's teenage son was taken into police custody after he was seen rolling dice near his high school.

The two officials say police approached 15-year-old Alex Paterson and four other 15-year-old boys on a Manhattan street Tuesday and asked for identification. Three boys gave it and were allowed to leave. The officials say one boy initially refused to give his name and Paterson had a bank card not bearing his name.

The officials spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the boys are minors.

One says Paterson's son and the other boy were issued juvenile reports for loitering with the purpose of gambling. The teens don't have to appear in court and weren't charged criminally.

The Democratic governor asks for privacy "during this personal time."
