Harry Reid: Lieberman 'Double-Crossed Me' On Health Care

Lieberman Reid

In an article set to appear in Sunday's New York Times magazine, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says that Sen. Joe Lieberman blindsided him on health care reform.

Lieberman announced his decision to join a Republican filibuster on CBS's "Face The Nation" -- apparently without giving any warning to the leader of his caucus:

Lieberman's announcement, which torpedoed a compromise that Reid helped to midwife, caught the Senate majority leader by surprise. Reid had spoken with Lieberman two days earlier, and one of Lieberman's top aides participated in the Saturday-afternoon conference call that Reid orchestrates for Democratic senators who will be appearing on the Sunday talk shows. "He double-crossed me," Reid said stiffly, associates later recounted. "Let's not do what he wants. Let the bill just go down."

Reid and Lieberman had a face-to-face discussion shortly after the CBS interview. But according to the Times, it was a conversation with White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel that convinced Reid to drop a Medicare buy-in, which itself was a retreat from the public insurance option.

Rahm Emanuel, the president's chief of staff, arrived at Reid's office not long afterward -- casually dressed, a cup of coffee in one hand -- and after a brisk meeting, a decision was reached: Reid would abandon his compromise, which was intended to appease proponents of a government-run insurance plan ... As it turned dark outside, Reid began pulling senators aside in the lobby just off the Senate floor, speaking in a strained whisper as he presented the case in characteristically pragmatic terms. "I'm with you; I'm for you," he told Tom Harkin of Iowa, one of the Senate's traditional New Deal Democrats, who was pained that the public option was dying.

Sources told the Huffington Post in December that Emanuel urged Reid to cut a deal; the White House denied the report.

Lieberman is pushing back against the story, saying he didn't betray Reid at all. As proof, the senator gave Politico a letter he sent to Reid before the interview. But the paper reports that, "In it, Lieberman voices objections to the deal, but stops short of explicitly saying he would vote against it." That jibes with what a Senate Democratic aide told the Huffington Post at the time:

"Leadership was definitely a bit surprised with the lines being drawn in the sand the way they were," said the source. "We expected that he would say critical things about [the bill]. But he is not even giving us a chance to get it scored."

LIEBERMAN A DOUBLE-CROSSER--QUEL SURPRISE!
01:28 AM on 01/16/2010
If next week's MA senatorial election goes badly, the Dems will surrender their 60 vote majority and with it the ability to stifle Republican filibusters. But, that sad fact puts an end to the excuses for keeping Joe Lieberman in the Democratic caucus, holding committee chairmanships and enjoying seniority he accrued while a Democrat.
Boot him out of the party, in a public ceremony, if possible, and let him float in political limbo or, if the Republicans can hold their noses for the next four years, let him sign up with them and stab their backs for a while.

Joey Lieberman blindsided all of us.
Ran on one thing, changed his mind,
changed his party, ran on something else,
changed his mind, ran with mccain,
fell for palin, fell from grace.
Soon to be named king flip flop.
Soon to be retired for good.
His behavior is schizophrenic.

Both lieberman and Reid have a problem with the truth. They should both be retired by their voters.

why choose to air the dirty laundry at this critical juncture

Jeez..I certainly don't like the healthcare bill and believe we were ill-served politically to tackle it first....

but since we are so close, and since we have spent an inordinate amount of capital and goodwill, we might as well pass it and start making corrective revisions ASAP

It seems counterproductive for Reid to start goring the oxen at this time...........

Why risk offending Lieberman or even Snowe....especially in light of what is happening in MA......

What the Dems ARE getting by kissing Joe Slimerman and the blue dog's butts is only benefitting corporate america and not the American people. Do they think they are fooling anyone? obviously they are.

The banks/ Wall Street have gotten $24 trillion, NOT $700 billion, why aren't the blue dog turncoats asking for that to be "paid for", or for that matter the trillions for the 2 phony wars on "terror" ( how do you fight a state of mind??)

Obama should stop listening to wall street hooker Rahmmed Manhole and David Assholerod, BUTT he won't.

Obama and Joe are on the same side, that has been very evident from the start. Those millions the health care industry gave Obama bought them what they want. He is as much of a turn coat as Joe or anyone else.

Talking a good game isn't going to save Reid's reelection campaign if we end up with a Senate-based bad bill. Look at where things stand now:

Mandates to purchase insurance from private monopolies that will only be regulated by weak, underfunded state insurance boards.

No employer mandates, which the CBO estimates will lead to 9-10 million Americans ending up with worse insurance.

Excise takes that will hit those in professions dominated by older workers, women, and those who work in higher-risk environments (because demographics is the #1 factor in the cost of plans).

Exchange regulations that will make it more difficult for women to purchase insurance that covers a full range of reproductive services with their own money.

Medicare unable to negotiate drug prices, unlike government plans in the rest of the world and many private companies.

Funding for abstinence-only sex education that has been demonstrated as ineffective for years.

Maybe Reid is just planning to work in the insurance industry, so he doesn't care about reelection.
