MA Senate Candidate Brown Owns Five Properties

Brown

Massachusetts Republican Senatorial candidate Scott Brown has vaulted himself into once-improbable contention in a tight election in part by presenting himself as an everyman. His economic agenda is decidedly centered on small business. His favorite tag line concerns the mileage on his car.

"I live in Wrentham," Brown declared in a debate against his opponent, Attorney General Martha Coakley "I drive a truck. And, yes, it has 200,000 miles on it now."

It's been a politically advantageous narrative. But one complicated by Brown's personal finances. According to a review of Brown's 2008 financial disclosure report -- which was filed April 2009 and appears to be the most current document available -- Brown and his wife own (at least then) five separate properties. The list includes a 3,000-square-foot home near a lake in Wrentham, Massachusetts, a condo in Boston and a time share in Aruba.

Below are the details:

70 Hayden Woods, Wrentham, MA: A 3,000 squared-foot single-family house that is the current principal residence of Brown and his family. The house lies off a cul-de-sac in a recently developed neighborhood near a small lake is nearby. According to financial disclosures, it is valued at $100,000 or more.

1840 Commonwealth Avenue #11-14, Brighton, MA 02135. In October 2007 Brown and wife Gail purchased what property records indicate is two condominium units at 1840 Commonwealth Avenue in the Brighton neighborhood of the city of Boston. The assessed value for #11 is $60,000 to $100,000; for #14 it is $100,000 or more

1870 Commonwealth Avenue #8, Brighton, MA. Brown's 2008 SFI reports ownership of this unit, with a net income derived from it of $1,001 to $5,000. The property itself is valued at $100,00 or more

33 Ocean View Ave. Rye, NH. This property is listed as Brown's second home with an asset value greater than $100,000.

Aruba Timeshare. Brown and presumably his wife have a timeshare on the island that is valued at $10,001 to $20,000

Brown's office did not immediately return a request for comment. The state senator earned between $10,001 and $20,000 as a JAG attorney in the Massachusetts National Guard and another $80,001 to $100,000 from his own law offices in 2008 -- according to his financial statement.

Brown's wealth still pales in comparison to the state's other senator, John Kerry (D-Mass.), the richest member of Congress with a net worth of $167 million. But, like Kerry, his financial disclosures could prove problematic to his public image.

Owning a number of properties has certainly tripped up other candidates. During the presidential campaign, Sen. John McCain was tdamaged by revelations that he and his family held the rights to eight properties (though the biggest stumble came when he couldn't recall exactly how many he owned). Likewise, former Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) struggled mightily to justify the massive, $6 million mansion he had built in North Carolina while running a campaign based on helping the working poor.

I think Brown's lead has more to do with the media coverage than with Coakley. If you listen to the various cable news media, you would think Brown has won the Senate seat already! Mass. Dems need to get out and vote.

He was relatively poor growing up, mother on welfare for a while, worked hard, went to college, went to law school and became a lawyer, married and had 2 daughters, worked hard and became successfull, elected to state senate, running for US Senate,
sounds like an American success story, too bad he is white and a republican...

Do something:

http://my.barackobama.com/CoakleyN2N

Sign up and make some calls on Martha Coakley's behalf. I did, and I spoke to some of the nicest people. I got through to 16 people, and all but two were voting for Martha (including one woman who was rounding up her whole family to vote for her). BTW: the two who weren't voting for Martha Coakley were undecided! It's really an inspiring feeling to pick up the phone and dial a voter's number on the other side of the country (I'm in Los Angeles) and hear them say, "Oh, yes, we're all supporting Martha, don't you worry."

Make some calls for Martha right now!

So the libs are trying to paint his having money so therefore he is bad? Please. Obama has a $2 million mansion in Chicago and his wife wears $500 tennis shoes and carries $900 clutchbags. Al Gore has a 20,000 square foot mansion. Both of those millionaire snobs are beloved by liberals. Let's not go into the wealth of the Kennedys in MA or the lib Rockefellers. Nice try libs.

Maybe his wealth is revealed to expose his hypocricy of saying his car has 200,000 miles on its odometer as if he is poor? Everyone knew how rich are Edwards, Kerry, Rockfeller. No surprise there.

Dem? Repub? Is there a difference?

Ted Kennedy had chefs and gardeners working at his Hyannis compound that had homes bigger than 3,000 sqare foot. John Kerry owns a 5 story Beacon Hill mansion, a 3 story waterfront estate on Nantucket, and a 23 room townhouse in Georgetown among other properties.

Why is success a bad thing?

Ive never really understood why liberals hate anyone that's succesful. If they're rich, its ALWAYS because they stole or cheated for it. Never, EVER is there the possibility that someone worked hard and saved their money to get to where they are. By their definition,

Not sure why R's can't accept the possibility that someone either (a) inherited their money or (b) married into it. These truths are as plain as the nose on your face yet they cannot bring themselves to admit it. Sad, really, for a once great party to be reduced to such an obvious state of denial.

NOT that this situation applies to Brown. Still, he's tripped himself up by employing his 'everyman' narrative while owning a timeshare in Aruba, of all places. The campaign commercial pretty much writes itself. Stick a fork in him, he's done.

He probably should have given the McCain answer, "I'll have to check on that"! Maybe he doesn't consider the time share in Aruba a real property since he only owns it part of the time.

And we all have properties in Aruba! I know I so and all my friends do. Where else would we go on our vacas???

Shouldn't this article say he has SIX homes, not five?
He has the home in Wrentham, a home in New Hampshire and THREE condo properties in Boston, plus the time share.
SIX Homes!

He has so many he forgets sometimes and so does the author.

Scott is not to be trusted - he is a right wing republican through and through - and yes, all these properties are much more valuable than posted here - that alone should make you wonder what he is up to - he only thinks of himself and what he can get out of it - why would he want to be taxed on his riches - he doesn't so he will change that...

Another rich, uber conservative, Republican (and, a former nude model!) hoping to represent the best interests of corporate America and the wealthy in Washington. Aren't there too many of these, already (except for the naked part)?
10:53 PM on 01/14/2010
I wouldn't necessarily call 1.5 million in heavily mortgaged personal and investment property in Wrentham, MA rich. Especially at 50 years old and with most of those mortgages reaching out to 2037 (yes 27 years to go on the mortgages). The man works three jobs and only makes 40,000 more a year than the median income for Wrentham. You have to expect someone working three jobs to make more than the average one job Joe. As far as who he represents, he is a family lawyer and not a corporate lawyer. As far as uber conservative, his position on abortion is actually socially liberal to moderate, but he is a fiscal conservative (which of course the majority of the United States is).

Isn't it a bit suspect that a person making $90,001 to $120,000 could get home loans on six properties? I doubt the same would be true for any one of us.

Glad he's running. If he's so rich, maybe he can help even out the playing field.

Eight of the top ten richest members in congress are democrats.

This article cracks me up! Obviously, most of the posters are not from MA. The guy is from Wrentham! Not know as one of the wealthiest areas in the state..quite the opposite.

He has 2 apts in Brighton, again, we are not talking Boston here. With all the foreclosures and condos selling for less than $100K, which were worth $300K 3 - 4 years ago, I would scoop up some units too, especially if I had 2 daughters in college ready to be out on their own. Nice to have the girls in the same complex, close to public transportation. Nice move Brown family.

And...the summer home in NH !! Ha! Its not West Palm Beach, the Cape or Islands. Its NH..a lake. Not expensive at all.

Then, a time share..whooppee. Show me a 50 year old in MA with any kind of job not owning a time share. This was a big thing in the 80's and cost around $15K. Not such a big deal for a family with 2 professionals. My family is not rich by any means and we own a time share and a summer home that was passed on from our grandparents. We are middle income average joes.

I believe Scott is representing us average joe/jane middle class and he LISTENS.

Thank goodness I live in MA and can vote!

For ANYONE in the Bay State to cast aspersions on Brown for owning rentals, when you have Kerry and the Kennedy dynasty, built on bootlegging and banking, is really rich!

Is he running against them. And as far as I can tell the last Kennedy to run has already expired. So if you are talking about Teddy, shame on you! And since his two older brothers are also gone their wealth is now irrelevant isn't it?
