Michelle Obama Reflects On First Year Of Kids, Clothes And Crashers

NANCY BENAC   01/13/10 03:32 PM ET   AP

Michelle Obama

WASHINGTON — Michelle Obama reflected on her first year in the White House on Wednesday and calmly claimed no need for any do-overs: Even the things that didn't go quite right were part of the learning curve, the first lady said, and that includes the November state dinner penetrated by three party-crashers.

"The evening was so wonderful and it was so well-orchestrated that for me, the other stuff that everybody is talking about is a footnote to what the state dinner actually was," she said. "So I wouldn't do that over."

Overall, Mrs. Obama said, "the things that have worked and the things that haven't worked are all a part of making this experience what it is and getting us all ready for this coming year."

The first lady looked back at the past year during an hourlong conversation with a handful of reporters in the Old Family Dining Room, seated under portraits of two of her predecessors, Frances Cleveland and Edith Roosevelt. With her new bobbed haircut, the first lady arrived wearing a favorite russet-red dress and over-the-knee Jimmy Choo suede boots that she confessed allow her to avoid wearing stockings.

She ticked off a list of achievements for 2009: holding 200-plus White House events, visiting 14 states and eight countries, establishing a garden, creating a mentoring program and more. But she declined to give herself a grade for the year, saying "really, how do you do that? And then what happens after you do it?"

The first lady called 2009 "a good year of listening and learning" and laying the foundation for issues she'll push in 2010 – principally a campaign against childhood obesity.

While Mrs. Obama in the past has used the bully pulpit to promote issues such as healthy eating, national service and mentoring, she will take on a larger role as the point person for an administration-wide fight against childhood obesity, including pushing for changes to the school lunch program. She'll make her pitch to the nation's mayors during a gathering in Washington next week.

Her hope is to ultimately produce measurable changes in obesity rates among youth.

"I want to leave something behind that we can say that because of this time that this person spent here, this thing has changed," she said. "And my hope is that that's going to be the area of childhood obesity."

Mrs. Obama said that establishing a vegetable garden on the South Lawn this past year proved to be a surprisingly potent way to start a "non-threatening" conversation about eating right and fighting obesity. It's key, she said, to talk about the issue "in a way that doesn't make already overstressed, anxious parents feel even more guilty."

While the conversation with the first lady ranged over a variety of issues, Mrs. Obama declined to share her thoughts on Republican Sarah Palin, saying she didn't know her well enough. And she said no decision had been made about whether she'll be involved in campaigning for candidates in the 2010 midterm elections.

Mrs. Obama said she began last year with overriding worries about her daughters, Sasha and Malia, focusing on how the girls and her own mother would adjust to the move to Washington. In March, when the girls declared they felt at home in Washington, "that was the first time that I really was able to breathe a sigh of relief," Mrs. Obama said. Asked about her major accomplishments for the year, the first lady started with this: "My kids are sane. I recognize them as the kids that they were before we got here."

Mrs. Obama said 2009 was also about "figuring out the job" of first lady. She said it's been surprising to have every move, word and wardrobe choice subjected to celebrity levels of scrutiny.

"How you stay grounded is to not focus on it," Mrs. Obama said, adding that she checks in with friends from her past to make sure it's not all going to her head.

Asked about how the state dinner had been handled, the first lady said the White House and Secret Service were taking steps to make sure such a breach never happens again. Pressed specifically about how the event had been handled by her longtime friend, Social Secretary Desiree Rogers, the first lady added: "When I say the White House, I mean everyone in the White House."

On another matter, Mrs. Obama said Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid had no need to apologize to her for his remarks about President Barack Obama's race and dialect.

"I know Harry Reid," she said, "and I measure people more so on what they do rather than the things that they say."

Reid apologized last weekend after a new book revealed that during the 2008 presidential campaign, he had described Obama as a light-skinned African-American "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one."

Michelle Obama has done a wonderful job as first lady. She is intelligent and charming, well spoken, elegant and sylish. She has chosen to focus on issues very close to women's hearts in this country - the welfare of military families, childhood obesity, education, mentoring. We as Americans are very proud of this gracious, accomplished and beautiful woman representing the best of womanhood. What a fine example to the world she presents as wife, mother, and partner with the President in bringing positive and compassionate change.

Since when did posting an opinion become such a food fight ? Since another poster here mentioned my name in the company of the few posters here who dare to disagree with the majority, I would like to remind you all that it is a free country, {sort of}..
I listened closely to her speeches during the campaign, while I did not care for some of her remarks, I thought she was just as dynamic as her husband, and she was a big part of the reason I voted for him.
I don't think she has lived up to her potential. I blame that on the Administration, who is afraid they have a tiger by the tail and constantly muzzle her. I do feel her staff is large for these tough times, i wouldn't give a damn if she was allowed her own voice and could tackle substantive issues where she could make a real difference. I find her status as a fashion icon, is unworthy of her credentials.. I am extremely proud of how well she represents our country to the world.
I will now await the "hater" remarks.

Can we stop using "POTUS" and "FLOTUS"? So unnecessary, and strange when read phonetically.

I really cannot believe there are so many really mean obnoxious and vitriolic people on this site. Just because someone doesn't agree with others is no reason to knock them about verbally. People seem to believe that theirs is the only voice that matters. It's ok to have differing opinions without getting downright punchy about it. Some of the comments astound me. I disagree with many on this post and I do agree with the minority here but jaylo has as much right to her opinion as anyone else and it is her right to post as it is anyone else. I like janemarple's posts and I admire jaylo's post and I respect the right for others to post as they please but one can do it respectfully. This people in the country are really getting ugly, rude and mean and I don't mean ugly as in looks. I like Michelle, I voted for her husband, I'm disappointed in her husband and I'm disappointed in Michelle though I had no expectations for her and I criticize her a lot as I think she has lousy fashion sense but I don't criticize her right to wear what she wants. There I had my say and I feel better.

Look at yourself in a mirror when using the descriptive
works, "really mean, obnoxious and vitriolic." Next pass it along to Mr. Jaylo.

Take you finger off the caps key and then reconsider what you posted. What qualifications does Michelle have to be president. Good heavens even palin is more qualified than Michelle besides the fact that Michelle doesn't want the job and can you blame her.

Mssreader...

According to the U.S. Constitution Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton among other women are qualified to be a U.S. President. It's the American people who vote for who they like. The comparison of Palin to Michelle Obama is laughable at-best to me.

Sarah Palin has demonstrated she is out for #1 not her country. Who in the hell quits their Governor post 18 months before the end of the term to take a job at FAUX News? What smart public person goes on television and repeats the lie that a healthcare reform bill will result in a "death panel." Shame on her for that.

And my last comment on Palin is that she's also demonstrated an inability to act on behalf of the American people...she's good at talking (Oprah, Glen Beck, O'Reilly, etc.) but unlike the First Lady who champions military families, helps raise awareness about physical exercise, works to address childhood obesity, and acting as a surrogate for the POTUS as she did recently at the DOL talking about the U.S. response to the Haiti crisis.

No, these two women are very different indeed. I can't imagine Michelle Obama quitting the job before its done.

but you are right, Mrs. Obama is likely not the politician her husband aspired to become.

I doubt one person has lost one pound since MO started her garden. This is the kind of project, noble though it may seem, is not a good project of a First Lady in the middle of a depression/recession. Most Americans worried sick about their jobs, their kids' inability to find jobs, their relatives and neighbors without work, their loss of savings, do not want to be told to go on a diet.

A good idea would be for MO to raise private funds to renovate the National Mall which, the WP reported some time ago, was in a sad state of disrepair. That would be a gift to the American public who elected her husband and would not involve hectoring folks to go on a diet. It would also be bipartisan. It would be a nice legacy in this difficult time.

You are joking right? Not only can planting a garden bring health results but in this recession it can save you some serious money. I'm unemployed and that goodness for my tomatos, broccoli, watermellons, strawberries and cucumbers, they are tasty and cheap!

ElsaIndy... it's misplaced to characterize MO's garden as a saviour of peoples health. First Ladies traditionally are "conversation starters" not political leaders. using your logic, I could easily say that nobody really gained from the literacy project from former FL Laura Bush...especially in light of Ms. Oprah Winfrey getting millions of books to fly off the shelves and a boost to American readership for the last decade. Mrs. Bush never had such an impact, right?

Your suggestion that MO raise private funds is an invitation for disaster because no sitting FL has ever raised private $$ for public works. MO calibrated her garden just right (my opinion) because it starts a conversation about healthy eating, she can connect to childhood obesity, and given her own two active daughters, it's likely a cause she has personal interest. I agree though that the National Mall should be kept up but it's not appropriate for a FL.

I think it's too bad that Michelle's hairstyle knocked the funeral photos off the first page. I like Jill Biden and don't get to see many photos of her. Just think, Michelle's hairstyle overrides a funeral for the VP's 93 year old mother. So much for family values.

There are strong parellels between Michelle Obama and Cherie Blair - the wife of the former British prime minister, Tony Blair.

Messers Blair and Obama were (are) married to lawyers. Both men were easily articulate (Tony moreso than Barry), and both had wives who were somewhat aggressive and prone to making unfortunate statements in public.

One hopes that Mrs Obama will find the time to study and learn from Mrs Blair's errors, which were legion.

Yes, but Cherie was a practicing lawyer, there's one thing to be working as a lawyer and another to having a law degree. Has Michelle ever "worked" as an attorney?

I don't see the parallel. While I admire Tony Blair's ability to argue his views before Parliament, he was too prone to allow W to dictate his course of action. President Obama shows his ability to think on his feet and takes his time to come to a decision after consulting many views. Cherie Blair has made so many unfortunate public statements since her husband left office that it boggles the mind. In contrast, our First Lady speaks her mind without embarrassing our country. She excels at everything she does, much to the chagrin of Republicans, even those who suggest they are "educated".

patricia, but what in the world has she done that she excels at. People are always going on about all that she's done and her accomplishments, I'm not talking about before first lady but the past year. I don't think keeping her "fashion" image and hairstyle before the public at all times is something that is worthy though others may and do disagree with me. I really expected Michelle to be what others are always saying she's doing/done. I just don't see it.

Mrs. Obama's image has been carefully crafted to soften her after the campaign. I understand the reasoning behind this, but it is stifling. Her comments about how her husband smells bad in the morning and not so subtle jabs about the Clintons marital problems came to an abrupt end during the well managed PR campaign.
02:26 PM on 01/14/2010
She sounds like a down to earth kind of lady. She is lucky, that in her role, she can take the time to see what it is like to be living in the WH. Her husband can't. Someone has to take care of the kids and be the rock for the family. She has a good head on her shoulders.

Michelle Obama is the epitome of what America should want in a modern day First Lady. besides her engaging personality, intellect, passion for her family and country, she is also a woman able to transcend privilege and connect with military families, children, Queens, celebrities, and her fellow Americans. While the media seems intent to treating the Obamas' as a celebrity couple vs. a political couple, this amazing woman doing a great job representing our nation. More visible than Laura Bush and less aggressive than Hillary Clinton, nobody mistakes Mrs. Obama for "another political wife."

I also appreciate how she and President Obama, whenever together, emanate a couple in LOVE. That's very nice to see the First Couple be a couple. I give you an A+ Mrs. Obama!

I had hopes, high hopes in the beginning but the past, almost year have changed those hopes to despair and sadness at what could have been. Mssreader...your post is confusing are you referring to the First Lady or her husband. Because it reads that you are and in that case, you obviously have decided to judge the term of the POTUS by his first year which by all historical account is unlike any first year presidency since the Civil War era. I wonder if you judged the last president as harshly in the months following Iraq, Afghanistan, the recession, Katrina, etc.??

It seems to me that most American women manage to look after their families, hold a job, contribute to their communities and places of worship, try to eat well, and look good while doing all this, with little or no help..Aren't they {or us} the ones we should be celebrating and admiring ? Few journalists will interview everyday heroes, but maybe they should start. It would probably be more interesting.

Janemarple...I think your comparative assessment is misplaced in that most American women are not married to the President of the United States and with that, comes a tremendous amount of scrutiny, interest, and even possible criticism. Even women (spouses in general) married to corporate executives, celebrities, local politicians, etc. generally are held accountable in the public view for the children, personal appearance, etc. So while we both applaud the millions of spouses who do all that the First Lady does without media coverage, the roles cannot be reasonably compared. Can you imagine being photographed and critiqued about your apperance at every event? Having your best intentions/good deeds be taken out of context by strangers, and oh yeah...traveling with the leader of the free world to a dozen countries during a school year and still managing to keep your kids happy/healthy.

I personally know a few women married to high profile men and they comment on the ability of Mrs.Obama to manage her world pretty well. Just an opinion to consider. And I agree, you should always be proud of yourself!

Myturn, I agree with much of what you say. Who knows how well other FL's would have fared under the constant scrutiny and endless silly analysis of multiple pundits?. At least in the past, most had some degree of privacy. Having said that, today's media circus is well known to anyone contemplating entering public life. I daresay it probably discourages lots of good people from running for their local school board, much less national office. At least the Obama's had his years at the state and federal level to prepare them, at least a bit, for their new role.
Still, i feel sorry for the kids, imagine being that age and not even being able to go to a friend's house without endless folderol... doesn't sound like much fun.

Michelle Obama's life this past year is every working woman's or every housewife's life magnified 1000 times over.

Balancing taking care of your children, your husband and marriage, the household staff, etc. and at the same time trying to take care of yourself by exercising or doing something as simple as changing your hairstyle.

All the naysayers here remind me of my mother-in-law who always criticized me for never having a house that was clean enough all the while ignoring the accomplishments that my children were making in school or the success that I was having in my career. I don't think Michelle will ever be able to win with ignoramuses like some on this site, but in the end she doesn't need to care. She is loved and respected by so many more.

I am proud of you, Michelle. Stay strong and stay blessed!
