Mother Nature Network:

About a year after the launch of McKibben's 350.org, one local retailer in Minneapolis named Cinda Baxter saw an Oprah show which encouraged a moratorium on shopping to help the environment. She realized then she had to create a campaign that reframed the issue of consumerism entirely -- it's not shopping itself that's killing the planet. It's HOW people are shopping.

Yes, absolutely, 3/50 -- Localization -- is the cure for our global situation.

3/50 is hardly the only movement to promote localization. The global Transition Culture movement takes localization beyond merely buying local to education and training to develop the skills that local communities need to thrive in place.

And keep in mind that nothing scares the oil and energy industries more than a YOUR own wind turbine and solar panels on your house. Spread the energy sources all around and the oil industry loses its hold on us -- and it is a serious hold. You can pay off your college loan. You can pay off your mortgage. But you can never pay off your utility bill. Some call it "fossil fuel feudalism."

Liberate yourself from the utility tyranny and
