Susan Boyle

LONDON — Women are dominating the nominations for Britain's leading music awards – the Brits – but Internet sensation Susan Boyle was snubbed on the shortlist.

Quirky chanteuses Florence and the Machine, Pixie Lott, Lily Allen and Lady GaGa all have three nominations.

Other British contenders include boy band JLS, Leona Lewis, Bat for Lashes, Paolo Nuttini and Dizzee Rascal.

Nominees in the international categories include Bruce Springsteen, Eminem, Jay-Z, Michael Buble and Shakira.

Robbie Williams will receive an award for outstanding contribution to music at the Feb. 16 ceremony in London.

The awards are the British equivalent of the Grammys. Most winners are selected by a vote of over 1,000 industry members.

And the adam lambert fans who in october said he would wipe the floor with her in sales must feel real sick, pheeeeew thank god she did not stick the cleaning woman;s head between her legs otherwise her sales would have been as bad as his.

The Susan Boyle story was a sweet one/it touched everyone hearts............but lets be honest, she is "one hit wonder"....here today, gone tomorrow. Go home Susan Boyle, enjoy your money....you will never be a serious contender in the music world. I'm not trying to be mean, but pleassssssssssssse

Susan can cry all the way to the bank.

The "professionals" are annoyed that someone with a direct connection to the hearts of her audience bypassed the usual climb to the top, and they're jealous.

Susan will have the last laugh.

Once again, a misleading headline. Awards are for artists - those who have achieved in a certain craft or profession. Boyle is barely starting out, and it is unlikely she will do much performing, although she can have a nice career just putting out CDs. Even with the record sales, she hasn't done anything to be snubbed for yet. She's a beginniner.

You are absolutely right about the headline being misleading. Susan Boyle is not being snubbed. Her CD was only released a few weeks ago. She is just starting her professional singing career. There will be other awards that she can qualify for in the future.

Her "failure" to be acknowledged is all about her looks and her age. I love her CD, play it all the time.
I cannot relate to an artist like Lady GaGa. I can relate to Boyle and her "story" and I think she has a very powerful voice. She will never be a Celine Dion or a Streisand(my other two favs)but Susan is "one of a kind" singer......I am glad she finally has tons of money in the bank. Even if she is a one-CD wonder, she has proven that people relate to her personality and her singing. She can laugh all the way to the bank now....screw awards!!!

I don't care for the genre of music that Susan Boyle does, but I'm not at all surprised she was snubbed. I like a lot of music which is snubbed by the record industry. They are artists which, like Susan Boyle, think they're doing their thing pretty well but don't fit into what is hot or hip or acceptable to whomever it is that decides that the music/performer/performance is acceptable and/or sellable.

Thankfully, there are labels which are willing to acknowledge that music, indeed even good music, is made by average looking people with genuine talent.

The industry can be so vain. It used to be annoying, now I despise it.

Agreed 100%. I personally find a lot of Susan Boyle fans rather condescending, often coming across a bit too high and mighty that they listen to someone who doesn't fit the stereotypical pop star image, while basically admitting they like her because she's ugly (well, I chuckle at the last part :P)

We get it, good for you. Just realize that there are many of us have been doing that for decades, and didn't need American Idol to tell us.

I don't think Susan Boyle is ugly. She is a very typical looking middle-aged woman (think your aunts, mother, etc. at that age). In her younger years she was very attractive, but age happens, whether male or female--only it seems in our society we are more forgiving of aging males while aging females, especially those who step out of the role they are supposed to play, are ridiculed. That's why Susan has so much support, she actually had the courage, to step out of her role as a spinster caregiver and try to achieve her dream. It has nothing to do with her looks but everything to do with her talent.

Oh, by the way it was Britain's Got Talent, not American Idol.

There is a TIME FRAME in which the albums have to be turned out to be considered. Boyle's CD wasn't released inside that time frame -- it will be up, maybe, next time around. So it isn't a snub, it's a misleading headline.

I bought her CD and love it. Susan Boyle has a wonderful voice. Those who disagree are in the minority and are lacking in critical awareness regarding voice and music. And they are meanspirited. If she was gorgeous, all would be different.

If she was gorgeous, she'd be just another pretty singer who's good at karaoke. I find it hilariously ironic that the only reason people care about her is because she's ugly.

Be that as it may, I'm not saying she's a bad singer, but I'm not saying she's a great singer either.

Okay, all Susan Boyle lovers on one side of the room, the haters on the other.

This is how it plays. Everyone has preferences in vocal quality, style of music, and all that stuff. The guys who love loud fast music are not going to like Susan Boyle. The ones who like show tunes and mellow sentimental music are probably going to like her. When one sings music slowly it's much easier to get a sense of the quality of that voice. This ability to judge is lacking in those entertainers who use loud backup music and scream. It's not a "She can't sing" or "She's the best" issue. It a matter of preference, so agree to disagree already.

You can't lump everyone into those two categories, that's very narrow-minded.

Its nice that she's getting attention but her album was pretty soft boiled. She's lucky, but awards are going a little far and would be just for impact and record sales, not quality!
01:11 PM on 01/19/2010
and why should she care... while standing in line at the bank... making a huge deposit... for the best selling album of the year.
for everyone who was a nay sayer for her music... well, someone must be liking it. :-)

I agree. But, one mistake, Taylor Swift beat Susan Boyle by just a nose for top 2009 album sales. Just wait for the Grammys - I bet Susan will be recognized by the U.S. for her extraordinary talent!

She has the best selling album RELEASED in 2009, because the rate of her sales is greater than Taylors as the sales continued into the new year. Susan's 2009 CD has now sold more CDs than Taylor's 2009 CD, even though Susan's was released 13 days before the end of the year, and Taylor's was released much earlier in the year.

So many singers and there are singers like Norah Jones who are gifted with the voice that sets them apart from the rest. Susan has that gift , her voice which in time will be recognized by so many more and some of us are fortunate to get a chance to appreciate.

Susan Boyle's singing is unique in contemporary music, simply because she is judged by those who love her and buy her music rather than by those who promote music to get people to buy it. She's completely out of sinc with contemporary standards, and doesn't fit on the graph of what audiences have been marketed to buy by the corporations who decide which artists are promoted.

She's been elected by those of us, who hear within the quality of her voice the experience of a nobody who sang to her mother because the bond between them was important to her. Her talent is connected to her existence as someone, like the rest of us, who accepts we'll never be recognized just because we do something somewhat better than others.

As it is, Susan's music enchants me and millions of others, and being that we are free to ignore whom we please and to give attention to whom Iwe please. I'm pleased to listen to her all I want.

Her singing may not be rewarded, but it's rewarding.

She isn't a performer, she's a talented plant. We're talking a woman who can't give three performances without a nervous breakdown. A woman who shouldn't be allowed to sign a contract without a judge looking out for her interests. A patsy in a world of sharks.

NOT a legitimate performer.

If it wasn't for people like you then maybe the S.Boyles of the world wouldn't become such fragile minded people. She talked about getting bullied, picked on and made fun of from her childhood and throughout her adult life.
S.Boyle has a beautiful voice and has much good to offer this world; What beauty have you gifted us?
