Mr. Ford, 39, arrived at the State Line Diner in Tappan, N.Y., at 10:30 a.m., wearing a pinstripe charcoal suit, and introduced himself to everyone in the restaurant, without saying exactly what office he was seeking. "Hi, I'm Harold Ford," he said, stopping at each booth. "What's your name?"
But Mr. Ford occasionally slipped, telling at least two diners that he was "running for Senate," rather than simply exploring a run.
