Tim Tebow Super Bowl Ad: Women's Groups Pressure CBS

Tim Tebow Super Bowl Ad Womens Groups Pressure Cbs

NEW YORK — A national coalition of women's groups called on CBS on Monday to scrap its plan to broadcast an ad during the Super Bowl featuring college football star Tim Tebow and his mother, which critics say is likely to convey an anti-abortion message.

"An ad that uses sports to divide rather than to unite has no place in the biggest national sports event of the year – an event designed to bring Americans together," said Jehmu Greene, president of the New York-based Women's Media Center.

The center was coordinating the protest with backing from the National Organization for Women, the Feminist Majority and other groups.

CBS said it has approved the script for the 30-second ad and has given no indication that the protest would have an impact. A network spokesman, Dana McClintock, said CBS would ensure that any issue-oriented ad was "appropriate for air."

The ad – paid for by the conservative Christian group Focus on the Family – is expected to recount the story of Pam Tebow's pregnancy in 1987 with a theme of "Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life." After getting sick during a mission trip to the Philippines, she ignored a recommendation by doctors to abort her fifth child and gave birth to Tim, who went on to win the 2007 Heisman Trophy while helping his Florida team to two BCS championships.

The controversy over the ad was raised Sunday when Tebow met with reporters in Mobile, Ala., before beginning preparations for next weekend's Senior Bowl.

"I know some people won't agree with it, but I think they can at least respect that I stand up for what I believe," Tebow said. "I've always been very convicted of it (his views on abortion) because that's the reason I'm here, because my mom was a very courageous woman. So any way that I could help, I would do it."

Thirty-second commercials during the Super Bowl are selling for $2.5 million to $2.8 million. Gary Schneeberger, a spokesman for Focus on the Family, said funds for the Tebow ad were donated by a few "very generous friends" and did not come from the group's general fund.

Schneeberger said he and his colleagues "were a little surprised" at the furor over the ad.

"There's nothing political and controversial about it," he said. "When the day arrives, and you sit down to watch the game on TV, those who oppose it will be quite surprised at what the ad is all about."

The protest letter from the Women's Media Center suggested that CBS should have turned down the ad in part because it was conceived by Focus on the Family.

"By offering one of the most coveted advertising spots of the year to an anti-equality, anti-choice, homophobic organization, CBS is aligning itself with a political stance that will damage its reputation, alienate viewers, and discourage consumers from supporting its shows and advertisers," the letter said.

However, Schneeberger said CBS officials carefully examined Focus on the Family's track record and found no basis for rejecting the ad.

"We understand that some people don't think very highly of what we do," Schneeberger said. "We're not trying to sell you a soft drink – we're not selling anything. We're trying to celebrate families."

The idea for the ad came from an employee in Focus on the Family's film department, Schneeberger said, and the Tebows "were thrilled" when it was proposed to them. The Tebows, including Tim, have been outspoken in discussing their Christian faith and their missionary work.

All the national networks, including CBS, have policies that rule out the broadcast of certain types of contentious advocacy ads. In 2004, CBS cited such a policy in rejecting an ad by the liberal-leaning United Church of Christ highlighting the UCC's welcoming stance toward gays and others who might feel shunned by more conservative churches.

CBS was criticized for rejecting that ad – and perhaps might have worried about comparable criticism from conservatives if it had rejected an ad featuring such a charismatic and well-known figure as Tebow.

CBS noted that it had run some advocacy ads in recent months, including spots taking conflicting sides in the debate of a national health care overhaul.

Terry O'Neill, the president of the National Organization for Women, said she had respect for the private choices made by women such as Pam Tebow but condemned the planned ad as "extraordinarily offensive and demeaning."

"That's not being respectful of other people's lives," O'Neill said. "It is offensive to hold one way out as being a superior way over everybody else's."

A national columnist for CBSSports.com, Gregg Doyel, also objected to the CBS decision to show the ad, specifically because it would air on Super Sunday.

"If you're a sports fan, and I am, that's the holiest day of the year," he wrote. "It's not a day to discuss abortion. For it, against it, I don't care what you are. On Super Sunday, I don't care what I am. Feb. 7 is simply not the day to have that discussion."

Many would not agree with restrictions on abortion because they believe women should have the right to choose what they want, but how could women make the right decisions under pressure of any given situation? Different situations could vary, but situations like economic issues, denial of family, unexpected pregnancy and inexperience could lead mothers into making decisions that would scar them forever. A number of reliable sources proofs that most mothers don’t agree with abortion, but they still do it, and then they suffer psychological, physical, and emotional consequences. That's why when anybody mentions the topic, mothers that have aborted feel that they are been offended, but they are not, what they feel is pain or regrets from that unhealed scar that will never heal.

Maybe there are some parts of our hectic and pressured lives that deserve to be left alone. There are only a handful of programs that gather as many people together for a good time. The Superbowl. The Oscars. The finales of American Idol, Dancing with the Stars and 24.

Throwing this important and inflammatory issue into the center of what should be a small oasis of family and friend time, seems like ambush marketing in its worst form. And the marketers who paid their few and hard earned dollars to place a spot about Clydesdales or Doritos in a game that’s just been scrubbed after its own tussle with a wardrobe malfunction—should speak up about the damage to the brand that spills onto their messages. The Superbowl brand isn’t the same if it’s turning the playing field into a political bloodbath. Thud. http://justaskawoman.com/wsnty/

Tim Tebow has the same First Amendment right any other US citizen does to speak his views, without censorship. NOT to have an abortion is also a choice. Pam Tebow made her choice, why are some people threatened by the fact that some other person's choice was different than theirs? The law makes abortion legal, not mandatory. Focus on the Family may want to ban abortion, but that's not going to happen. Talk about thought control. It seems it's only an evil thing when somebody on the right wants to control the decisions of others. I'm definitely NOT a right-winger, but liberty and free expression are the rights of all Americans. Bottom line, if the commercial offends someone that much, CHANGE THE CHANNEL. Nobody's making them watch.

Jeremiah 1:5 says, before I (God) formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations. With this verse we realize that God has a purpose for everyone, isn’t abortion getting in the way of God’s will? Well, I personally think so.

Tim Tebow is a self-righteous fundamentalist. BTW, just where is abortion mentioned in the bible again? Oh that's right. It not. But there is a verse that indicates that an unborn fetus is not equal to a human life, and there is another verse that states that life does not begin until AFTER birth. Read. Your. Bibles. People.
05:17 PM on 01/30/2010
Where does it say that! Please share. I've been looking for it. I like using the bible to dismiss some of these fundamentalist....LOL
06:52 PM on 02/01/2010
I have found over 20 instances where an unborn baby is referred to as a child, life or baby. In Ex. 21:22 - 25 there is an example of how the unborn child is equal to a life, so I don't know what you are talking about. The Bible says we shouldn't kill. Abortion is the intentional taking of a life. The Bible does, however, speak positively about adoption. What a great option.

Now that CBS has opened the door, Planned Parenthood should buy a Super Bowl ad that talks about the importance of sex education and giving teenagers access to birth control. They started it. PP should chime in
07:17 PM on 02/05/2010
What we should teach our children is to hold sex for marriage, and not encourage them to practice “safe sex” because there is no such thing as safe sex outside marriage. Such thing goes against the teachings of Jesus Christ. Sex outside marriage is considered fornication, and fornication is an abomination against the Lord our creator. Such practices diminishes the importance of marriage and that is why we see so many infidelities and destroyed marriages which at the end the only ones that suffers the most are the children.

"After getting sick during a mission trip to the Philippines, she ignored a recommendation by doctors to abort her fifth child and gave birth..."

Cases in which the health of the pregnant woman is endangered by carrying the fetus to term are an important reason why we need to be pro-choice.

But apparently Tim Tebow wants the government forcing pregnant women to give birth even when doing so risks their lives. Because his mother made that choice.

I hope this reinforces the common perception that "pro-life" people are less concerned with life per se, but rather more obsessed with telling others how to live their lives.
06:57 PM on 02/01/2010
Pro-lifers don't believe women should give birth even when doing so risks their lives. (Another rationalization from the pro-abortion camp.) Pro-lifers just don't believe "doctors" should risk the life of (abort) the baby just because the mom doesn't want to go through the pregnancy. If the baby is unwanted, she can give her/him up for adoption. Newborns are in great demand by childless couples.
07:49 AM on 01/28/2010
We are forced to see Tebow as a result of media types who have hyped him to a ridiculous degree. The true test is the NFL, where he will immediately be exposed as inferior athletically. Once cast aside, he will settle into a Florida used car sales job and no one will ever ask him about anything, ever again. Will his failure tell him that the Almighty has abandoned him? Will he ever ask himself such a question? The god I pray to has bigger than Tebow on his mind.

It's not about controlling women's bodies. It is about stopping the slaughter of babies. The babies are just taking temporary residence in their mothers' bodies.

Do you support public health care for the baby if the mother cannot provide?
09:07 PM on 01/27/2010
Prochoice is prochoice. One can choose to to abort or carry a fetus to full term. Tim Tebows' mom decided to carry full term. It isn't an option that should be kept a deep dark secret. Why are some people getting their knickers is in a bunch?
10:42 AM on 01/28/2010
Probably because Focus on the Family is most definitely not pro-choice.

Jim Daly, president and C.E.O. of Focus on the Family, said, “Tim and Pam share our respect for life and our passion for helping families thrive,” Daly said.

This implies that if a woman whose life is endangered by carrying a pregnancy to term chooses abortion, that they are not being less than respectful of life, and less than passionate about helping their families thrive.

The ad is not simply about bringing Mrs. Tebow's choice to light. Ironically, it's about allowing an anti-choice advocacy group into the Super Bowl advertising.
11:50 AM on 01/28/2010
It's manipulative. I know of plenty of women who chose to abort because of health reasons or their baby would be stillborn. It was heart wrenching and they very much wanted those babies. This ad tells them they might have killed the next Heisman winner.
08:19 PM on 02/02/2010
Talk about manipulative. Less than 3% of women who have abortions had health risks. So either, you know a lot of women who have had abortions, or you are using the worn-out excuse that we should allow all women to kill their babies instead of just the ones whose lives are at risk by stating that you know "plenty of women who chose" to kill their babies because of health reasons.

I'm completely ignorant of Superbowl demographics. Do that many unmarried women of childbearing age (the primary group that seeks abortion) really watch the Superbowl? Since most people 1) don't like being lectured/preached at, and 2) don't want their Superbowl experience usurped by a lecture/sermon, I predict this expenditure will be a waste. Better those millions spent on services that support struggling unwed mothers.

I'll spend halftime at the buffet table.

I think they should let The feminist groups at least post a response ad.

CBS said it has guidelines, I am sure if they follow those, and buy space they can.

I think its great that Tebow is doing this. He has always been a strong christian and is very strong on his pro-life views that go beyond just birth. I like it when he said this is me and this is what I believe in, Good for you Timmy. Would be honored to have him on my NFL team
03:43 PM on 01/27/2010
NOW says (in effect): "hey lets ban some books" we don't want people to hear about about a woman who made a decision

Explain, simply, why an ad celebrating the decision of one woman should cause other women to be out-rageously out-raged?

From what I've read, She's not taking anyones choice away, simply talking about hers. Isn't that what people do in a society that values free speech?

Shouldn't we celebrate her courageous decision to risk her own life for the life of her child?

Of course not. Proving once again that progressive women's groups only care about women who share their agenda.

This is why you will ultimately lose the battle for hearts and minds.

Please read more about Focus on the Family, which is committed to taking away all women's choices, including their ability to use birth control.

What you won't hear during this lovely tale is how many women die each year in the Philippines because of illegal abortions and forced pregnancies. Of course to tell the whole truth might put a bit of a damper on all that "look how moral and brave I am!" hoo-hah.

You seem to be buying the spin hook line and sinker.

Why do people find the need to criticize Tebow's NFL prospects? Surely these critics have had the opportunity to play themselves and know what it takes...? Let's just appreciate that he works hard and maybe even motivates youth to do the same.
