Clinton Missing State Of The Union Speech To Attend London Conference

Hillary Clinton State Of The Union

WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton missed President Barack Obama's State of the Union address to attend a conference in London, but she was not the only absentee Cabinet member.

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan was designated by the White House to ride out the speech in an undisclosed location as a precaution against the possibility of a catastrophe wiping out the rest of the government leadership.

When Clinton became aware that her trip to London – for separate conferences on Yemen and Afghanistan – would coincide with the State of the Union address, aides approached the White House about it.

"Could she be the Cabinet member who remains outside the Capitol? We were told that the 'undisclosed location' must be in the United States," said State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley.

Obama felt it was more important for her to go to London than to remain for his speech, Crowley said.

"She asked the president directly, 'What do you want me to do?' And he was very clear: These (London talks) are priorities, so your place is in London working on Yemen and Afghanistan-Pakistan," Crowley said.

As someone who strongly supported Obama during the primaries, I think Clinton is doing an excellent job at State. She was a great choice and I'm glad he appointed her. The conference in London was more important and that's where the President said she should be.

I have not always been a fan of Hillary but I have come to respect and admire her. She is an outstanding Sec of State and Obama is fully supportive of her and allowing her to do her job.

I'm in agreement. Hilary is out of the country DOING HER JOB - she is at this conference because it is part of her job as S.O.S to be at this conference. The headline is misleading and and tries to suggest this is some kind of scandal. Which it is not,.

HuffPo only did it because Drudge had it up first. Lot of that going on lately.

why would Obama risk re-election further by putting the Clintons and all their baggage on the ticket?

I can't believe there are no accolades for Ms. Clinton for her stand on free speech in China via Google. This should be huge news, but it's been relegated to the back pages already. This is a vastly important issue. The last member of Congress to take on the internet vs. the lack of free speech in China issue was the late Tom Lantos, a holocaust survivor. He took on Jerry Yang, then president of Yahoo, for giving up the name of a Chinese citizen who had merely looked up Western sites relating to speech issues. From the information given to the Chinese government by Yahoo, the man went to prison. This should NEVER happen again, and the firm stance such as Ms. Clinton has made, should be precedent. We should all support Google for their decisions, congratulations, Hillary!!

So typically Hillary.
08:54 PM on 01/27/2010
How is it typically here? She asked where Obama wanted her and he said London.

What's typical?

She is in London DOING HER JOB.

The headline of this article has attempted to spin something that is not there. This is not a snub, but Hilary in London at a conference representing the US as part of her job as S.O.S.
