But according to what I've read, he left Christian Science in his twenties, decades before his illness and death. I think he basically just foolishly delayed going to the doctor for what appeared to be a bad cold.

That was exactly the case. I only remember because I was driving to Maryland when I heard the news and pulled over...weeks later, it came out that he refused to have an ambulance come pick him up, instead taking a taxi. Or something to that effect...and he did so because he didn't want to bother anyone...I believe he felt he had a bad cold, and that there were others in more need than he.

I tell you what...this world could use him now.
