Because I've never heard of this, and I've got a cat-loving sister studying abroad in Tokyo and have myself been preparing for my JET program interview. What I do know is that cats are so loved in Japan that they have shops that let people whose apartments don't allow pets to come in and buy time to play with cats, and that cats are very well regarded in classical and modern Japanese fiction.

I once went to Japan and, sadly, spent HOURS in front of the TV, howling at all the commercials. Everything is just as trippy as this...

I watched the commercials too, but not "sadly." I felt culturally educated from it.
The most memorable commercial I saw was one for a certain body soap/wash. In it, a handsome Japanese couple go to see their darling son perform in a (grade school age) play. He is a ham and steals the show, works up a sweat, then comes home and showers in a sparkling array of colors and laughter. I love the Japanese and their aesthetic of sweetness. Western culture is coarse and vulgar, comparatively speaking.

The other commercial I recall was a hottie Japanese woman, suspended as if she were a pendant on a golden chain, to a new school Japanese rock jingle. At the end, she is helped down from her perch by the cameramen filming her.

Do waste 15 seconds of your day on this cat video about a cat on a business trip. Who would think that a cat could operate a mouse (irony there??)? I must say, the cat must have been heavily drugged to wear those glasses!
